to more tennis success. hello and welcome to sportsday. we'll start with the premier league, and burnley have got their first point of the season, after drawing 1—1 with nottingham forest. vincent kompanys side opened the scoring through zeki amdouni's 20—yard strike in the first half before callum hudson—odoi got the equaliser on his debut for forest. it wasn't without its drama though — burnley*s lyle foster had a goal disallowed for handball which would've put them back in the lead, before being sent off in stoppage time with a straight red. this result means burnley stay in the relegation zone, while forest move out of the bottom half of the table

and up to 8th. that thing with the premier league is when you play city, aston villa and tottenham in the first three games, would love to have control and everything goes our way but it is the same for forest when they play against these teams and the same for us. that is why a point is so valuable at the moment. for us, the biggest thing is if we keep progressing, we keep getting better and loads of the first year premier league players will get better very soon. then it is an exciting team beyond even this season and this season obviously is a priority with us being in the battle. we just want to grow. changing a little bit of shape today. got new players in and want to find a way of progressing but the only way to do that is take every day with great importance with everydbody committing to the plan. and really supporting and backing the players to be the best they can be. training levels have gone through the roof since we have everybody back and that is good. i believe in the process of training. we want to grow.
2:47 am
when we managed to stay in the league last year, which became a fight for survival, what it did was give us an opportunity to continue to build. that is what we want to do. what a start to the la liga season for girona. they are up to third in the table following a 4—2 win over granada. they haven't lost a game this season and sitjust behind real madrid and barcelona who are first and second respectively. different story for granada though, who have lost four out of five. in serie a, verona and bologna both had chances to run away with all three points, but neither could break the deadlock. torino comfortably beat salernitana 3—0 for their second win of the season. so, they go up to seventh in the table, while salernitana are without a win in four matches. now, the champions league is nearly back, and newcastle united's 20—year wait is nearly over. they kick it off at the san siro against ac milan. manchester city also begin
2:48 am
the defence of their trophy on tuesday, with the scottish champions celtic playing too, before the competition sees the return of arsenal and manchester united on wednesday. joe lynskey has more. for newcastle united, it is time to take on the next hurdle. the next step in their new era is a trip to the san siro, ac milan and the champions league. their last match in this city was in 2003 when a 2—2 draw with inter saw them just miss out on the knockout. two decades on, this trip*s their reward for a year of transformation. newcastle, second win of the season. it means they will set off for the san siro on a winning note. it's just something special. i keep looking around going i'm here to watch newcastle play football in the champions league and keep hearing champions league music wherever i walk, it's fantastic. this is as big as it gets, - cannot wait for the music more
2:49 am
than anything else. what does it mean to you? we're back in the champions league and doing it properly. proper group and i think that's the way we should do it, properly. the group of f will take newcastle to champions league giants but right now the team to beat in europe are the team who hold the trophy. manchester city start their defence at home. a match and a group that on paper looks straightforward and the treble winners feel already they have done the hardest part. will it be harder to defend it than it was to win it the first time? no, easier. easier than the first one. something incredible for us. first one in history. let's try to win tomorrow. just one win would mean so much celtic. progress on the stage is how coaches here arejudged. but he is back in glasgow
2:50 am
with the belief. it is a group celtic feel they can get through. anything is possible. people ask and ask you to forecast what you want to do and achieve but i think the spirit of this team will never be broken. have to have that at this level. we have to work very hard and very smart and let's see where it takes us. manchester united go from boos at home in brighton to a tough start. harry kane bayern munich will be his first championship league game. on wednesday they and arsenal returned to europe top tier. the first match here since 2017 is at home. the first night of a journey they hope will end up the road. a champions league finals at wembley injune. the road there starts this week.

spain's players have insisted again that they are continuing to boycott the women's national side, despite being named in the latest squad. a group of 81 players boycotted the national team after then spanish fa boss luis rubiales kissed forward jenni hermoso following last month's final, saying that they did not yet "feel in a safe place". 15 members of the team that won the world cup last month have been included in a squad for upcoming nations league fixtures, including two—time ballon d'or winner alexia putellas. however, hermoso was left out. here's our women's sport reporterjo currie. the squad for these matches were expected to be announced last week but had to be postponed after 39 of the players, including 21 of the world cup winners said they would remain on strike until further changes at the spanish federation took place. fast forward to today and the brand—new head coach montse tome has finally named her squad.
2:52 am
there are 15 world cup winners in there. also players such as mapi leon who refused to play at the world cup but there is no place forjenni hermoso. the player at the centre of the kiss at the final. the captain of scotland women, rachel corsie, says she believes the scottish fa can lead the way in the fight for equality, after ending the dispute with the national women's team. last week corsie and the team withdrew an inequality case against the association after an understanding was reached. speaking ahead of scotland's opening nations league game against england, corsie wouldn't go into specifics but said she'd achieved parity. they have set a really great precedent. they have become a nation that is going to be considered one that can be a leaderfor others. and the fact that now there is a lot that goes into preparation for the women's and men's senior teams.
2:53 am
it is going to be at a really high level. in cricket, and harry brook will be rested for the one—day series against ireland that starts this week. that's after he was named in england's world cup squad which starts next month. he got the call—up after jason roy was dropped, following back spasms which meant he missed the recent new zealand series. the feedback, obviously very disappointed. i am sure he is hurt. also jase knows what professional sports is like, he has been around long enough to know, i'm sure he's had some disappointment in his career as well. had to do the same thing with harry brook as well. this time for him it was a good call. that is how professional sport is. it is not nice at times. it can be amazing but not always highlight reels. dan evans was at the heart of a british davis cup victory at a sellout a0 arena in manchester on sunday. in the same day, evans delivered in both of great britain's singles and doubles wins over france to carry great britain through to the quarter—finals
2:54 am
in malaga. tennis journalist tumaini carayol was watching the weekend's matches in manchester. i think he is a perfect example of the connection the davis cup has made for players and people who are not in london or aren't in certain cities where there are big tennis tournaments. same around the world where other big tournaments are. these events can reach more people. for evans, he said what brought him into tennis was going to davis cup in birmingham when he was younger and seeing players up close. that lit a fire in him and i think it will be the same. this is the first time the davis cup is in manchester for 29 years which is a long time and i think also that is why there was such a big demand and why so many fans are willing to come on sunday. important this event is hosted in different parts
2:55 am
of the country so more people can see and be inspired. i think clearly that is hopefully what has happened this week. that's all from us. from me and the rest of the team at the bbc sport centre, goodbye. hello there. it has definitely been a gear change with the weather story in recent days. an autumnal flavour to our weather. we will certainly see threatening looking skies for the remainder of the week and some of the rain at times really quite heavy. so here is the next batch pushing in off the atlantic, just look at how many isobars there are on the chart. the winds a feature and some of that rain really quite heavy. so, to start with, on tuesday, the wettest of the weather moving out of northern ireland across southern scotland,
2:56 am
northern england and wales. and we'll see this frontal system moving its way south and north throughout the day. now it never really gets all the way across central and southern england so here, brighter skies into the afternoon, pretty windy. gusts of winds ao—asmph in places, maybe close to 60mph in exposed west facing coast and the heaviest of the rain across north—west england, scottish borders and northern ireland. the far north of scotland, bright as well, not quite as windy here but it will be noticeably fresher. top temperatures here around 13—15 celsius. we mightjust see 20 celsius further south if we get a little bit of afternoon brightness. now as we move out to tuesday into wednesday there's another area of low pressure and this one has the remnants, a little bit of energy from ex—hurricane lee there. so this one again will mean business, a lot of heavy rain sweeping its way steadily eastwards. don't forget the brighter greens denoting the intensity of that rain and the winds
2:57 am
again a feature, 50—60mph gusts not out of the question, particularly close to the centre of the low and far west of scotland. the top temperatures again, 14—21 celsius the high. so as we move out to wednesday there's more to come and it's all because the jet stream at the moment has sunk that little bit further south, it's intensified and centred across the uk. now all we know by now it's the jet stream, this ribbon of fast—moving air high up in the atmosphere that drives in areas of low pressure. and if it centres across the uk, then it's going to continue to push further areas of low in our direction. just look what's waiting in the wings as we head through the weekend. so, be prepared for some showers or longer spells of rain, the winds remaining a feature. a brief window of finer weather potentially on saturday. take care.

live from new york, this is bbc news. five us citizens imprisoned in iran are heading home, in a prisoner swap. world leaders converge here in new york for the un's annual general assembly. but some key people in power are missing this year. and the uk copes with dangerous flooding.
3:00 am
i'm sumi somaskanda in new york, where the annual united nation's general assembly has kicked off. we'll preview what to expect this weekend, but first, five us citizens, who were imprisoned in iran, are now travelling home. they were freed on monday, as part of a complex prisoner swap, mediated by qatar. the four men and one woman were flown out of tehran to qatar, then onto washington. their release was dependent on the us transferring 6 billion in iranian funds, money that iran earned from selling oil to south korea. in return, the us also released five detained iranian citizens, two of whom have landed in doha, according to iranian media. once they were released, us presidentjoe biden announced new sanctions, saying the us would continue to impose costs on iran for its "provocative actions". later on monday, the white house said president biden spoke to the families and the us secretary of state antony blinken said he spoke with the freed prisoners.
