the us government edges towards shutdown, after members of congress fail to reach an agreement on spending. government agencies will begin shutting down unless a deal ——both houses are sitting for special saturday sessions to try and reach a last minute deal. the uk prime minister rishi sunak arrived in manchester for the annual conservative party conference amid a row in party over taxes. it comes as railway unions stage strikes across the uk over pay and conditions. those are the headlines here on bbc news. plenty more coming up. now on bbc news, sportsday.
7:31 pm
hello and welcome to sportsday — i'm hugh ferris. our headlines this evening. a closer day... but still europe dominate in rome, needing four more points to regain the ryder cup the champions are no longer perfect. manchester city lose for the first time int he premier league this season and the lone home nation on a rugby world cup weekend, but scotland's quarter final hopes rest on a result against romania. also coming up on sportsday... st helens bid for a fifth consecutive super league title is still on, but onlyjust.
7:32 pm
the ryder cup scoreboard that was ticking up for two days is now counting down. europe need four points to regain the trophy, but go into the final day after the usa's best session so far. our correspondent andy swiss is in rome to reflect on a day that ends with europe still dominant, but with the americans grasping on to growing hope. it's been another dramatic care —— another dramatic day here in rome. the morning session followed the theme of yesterday, when of european domination, but then as you say, in the afternoon session, finally some fight from the us. but, the ryder cup is still very much europe's to win. they need just four points tomorrow to regain the ryder cup. as the sun rose over rome, so did the decibels. after a sensational first day, the european fans were ready for more. boy, did they get it,
7:33 pm
sweden's competitor together with victor holland made history. they won nine and seven, the biggest win ever at the ryder cup — one which left the scottish player in tears. oh, the emotion of the ryder cup. the us did finally have something to celebrate. max delivering their first victory. but it was their only success of the morning. by the time john conjured his latest stroke of genius, europe led by seven points and almost out of sight. unbelievable!— and almost out of sight. unbelievable! ., ., ., ., unbelievable! come the afternoon, thou . h, unbelievable! come the afternoon, though. the — unbelievable! come the afternoon, though. the us _ unbelievable! come the afternoon, though, the us finally _ unbelievable! come the afternoon, though, the us finally started. - unbelievable! come the afternoon, | though, the us finally started. they won the first two matches, hunger grabbing another point and apparently proving one. and while justin showed a skull composure to win his match alongside bob mcintyre, in the fading light, a glimmer of us health, as patrick one on the final hole in spectacular

fashion. a dramatic and to another traumatic day. andy, patrick will be just last holding that very important pump to get the us the finer points of the day, it is becoming a bit of a headline maker at this tournament this weekend. tell us why. this headline maker at this tournament this weekend. tell us why.- this weekend. tell us why. this is an interesting _ this weekend. tell us why. this is an interesting subplot _ this weekend. tell us why. this is an interesting subplot to - this weekend. tell us why. this is an interesting subplot to the - an interesting subplot to the american team, reports of unrest in their camp with patrick very much at their camp with patrick very much at the centre of that. and this is because players are not paid to appear in the ryder cup, and patrick apparently is not particularly happy about this. it was interesting that he was not wearing a team usa cap, unlike the rest of his team—mates. it was a hot day here as well, see you can understand why players normally would want to wear a cap, but he wasn't. he did not attend the gala dinner before the ryder cup, so suggestions that he is less than happy with aspects of the ryder cup,
7:35 pm
but certainly, you couldn't fault his commitment to the cries out there this evening or indeed that fantastic pot on the 18th hole. so, yes, we saw some fight from the us this afternoon but you have to put it in a little bit of context. they are still five points behind europe. no team has ever come back from five points down going into the last day to win the ryder cup. we think back to win the ryder cup. we think back to the miracle in 2012. well, you're part 10—6 down. so they were four points down and came back to win. five points have never been done. so the us will frankly need a sporting miracle, but at last, that little bit of fight that they have shown this afternoon perhaps has given them a glimmer of hope. manchester city have lost for the first time this premier league season. hwang hee chan's goal gave wolves a 2—1win at molineux ending the defending champions' perfect start and giving city a second defeat in four days
7:36 pm
after they went out of the efl cup. congratulations to wolves. they played really well. we struggle to make our build—up, our movements and, yeah, we had our chances, we struggled to control the transitions because they are really good, we defend really well, and that's all. manchester united's poor start to the season continues as they suffered a second successive league defeat at home. roy hodgson*s crystal palace claimed a 1—nil win at old trafford — a goal from joachim andersen. palace move 9th in the table above united who have now lost four of their first seven games. it's a bad start. we have to catch up. we have to do better. this is not good enough. and you feel confident that that might happen quickly? yes. of course. these players can do better in the final part. we control the game. then we have more
7:37 pm
qualities to show today. the last time luton tasted victory in the top flight was april 1992. but a 2—1win at everton has handed them their first since being promoted, and first ever in the premier league. representatives from everton*s new owners were in the goodison park crowd to see their team beaten by two set piece goals and booed off as luton climb out of the bottom three. i feel very proud of everyone. delighted for the football club. it's off our backs now. it's been a little while coming, but we believe, you know, we have been improving in every single game, and if people cared to look at us in the first game and follow us over the next few, they will see improvement in every one. today we get our first when away from home. a difficult day for us. but let's not get carried away. in the end, it is one win, three points, we got a very big game on tuesday.
7:38 pm
following manchester city's defeat, liverpool could have become premier league leaders in the late game but they missed that opportunity, losing 2—1 with tottenham and receiving two red cards. the goals came from son heung—min, his sixth of the season sending the tottenham hotspur stadium wild after a beautifulflowing team goal. cody gakpo got an equaliser just before the break, injuring himself in the process, before diegojota saw liverpool down to nine men. it looked like spurs would miss out on the opportunity to get the three points but a joel matip own goal saw tottenham fans celebrating and ange postecoglou's side go second, level with arsenal in the table. in the day's early game brighton lost for only the second time in the league season, and it was a heavy one, beaten 6—1 at aston villa who go above them and had a hattrick hero among their ranks.
7:39 pm
patrick gearey has more. aston villa's home stretch, still he left the child, just recently in the news. the players have reportedly complained that it is heavy when sweaty. the makers say they are dealing with that. perspiration is unavoidable when you work like aston villa. running that makes angles to score goals like this. allie watkins, 1—0. inform score goals like this. allie watkins, 1—0. in form and third, brighton were backpedaling, never a goodidea brighton were backpedaling, never a good idea with watkins around. aston villa are a team transformed. fuelled by energy. cleverly, and his 11 months in charge, he has given aston villa purpose. in the first captain of a sub dominated brighton, they coaxed him into scoring for them. accidentally making it three. brighton briefly gathered themselves after the break, creating enough chaos for the on loan player to score. but still, they hadn't worked out watkins. a little time, a little deflection. patric and game over. evenif deflection. patric and game over. even if the scoring wasn't finished, jacob ramsey off the bench to add a

fifth. douglas louisa sixth. a huge win achieved in comfort. no sweat. patric gary, bbc news. ——patric geary, bbc news. elsewhere sheffield united and burnley are still waiting for their first wins of the league season, losing to west ham and newcastle respectively. and arsenal's 4—0 win at bournemouth takes them a point behind manchester city. rangers have lost for a third time in the scottish premiership beaten 3—1 at aberdeen while celtic*s 2—1 win at motherwell came in dramatic circumstances. the home side equalised in the 95th minute only for celtic to get the winner in the 97th. second placed st mirren drew while hearts* win at ross county takes them fourth. there's just one premier league game tomorrow, clearing the way for the wsl*s opening day to take centre stage. the new season brings with it big stars and high expectations. jo currie looks ahead. what a pass that is!
7:41 pm
after another scintillating summer that saw the lionesses once again grab headlines, it's now time to return. the summer transfer window was busier than ever. a sign of how the times have changed. only a few years ago, most players moved between clubs for free and on short—term deals. manchester united alone were picked for the title last year and brought in nine new faces. i've never seen so many deadline day signings in my life and hopefully never will because it is a panic. manchester united is about winning and everybody that signed whether it be this year and throughout the years has come to manchester united because they want to win. i think the season we had last year was incredible and we've continued to break history. hopefully we do that again this year. wsl games being held at premier stadiums are becoming are becoming a regular site.
7:42 pm
matches took place at stamford bridge, and the emirates where a crowd of 50,000 is expected. follwoing the success of last year and their heroic run for the summer's world cup final has been protected the crowds across the board will rise once again this season. i expect to see attendance up, i expect to see viewership up. i expect to see social media up. i expect to see inbound commercial interest up. everything should be off the scale. we are coming off the back of a fantastic summer. we have had a very concerted and structured strategy for the women's super league since 2018 when it became professional and everything is coming good, so i think we are going to see every season from now on hitting and exceeding the previous records, at least that is the hope. manchester city and arsenal are expected to be amongst those teams that challeng this season but, once again, it will be chelsea who start the season as favourites. they target the fifth consecutive league trophy and begin the defence
7:43 pm
of their title at home to spirits. ——of their title at home to spurs. my biggest focus and effort is the fact that we have lost the four opening games in a row. that's my biggest concern. we need a win on sunday. we haven't done it forfour years running. there is still plenty of issues when it comes to women's football. acl injuries continue to blight the game. the congested calendar was brought to the forefront again this week as was appropriate kit and footwear. but when the action starts, the wsl delivers. what a goal it is! as it continues to be regarded as the best league in the world. jo currie, bbc news. it's two weeks since fiji shook up the rugby world cup in france by beating australia for the first time in 69 years and they could have dumped the wallabies out of the tournament today, but even though they fell short of that, they are
7:44 pm
closing in on a quarter final place nonetheless. a bonus point win for fiji over georgia would have meant australia couldn't qualify for quarterfinals, but georgia surprised many in bordeaux at one stage leading nine nil. fiji fought back, scoring two tries to win by 17 points to 12 with the chances of reaching the last eight still in their own hands with one pool game to go. argentina ran in eight tries at they thrashed chile 59—5 to set up a winner—takes—all final pool game with japan. the victory in nantes means argentina return to second in their group behind england. chile end their world cup with a fourth defeat. argentina's win also eliminates samoa from pool d. scotland are the sole home nation with a game in the rugby world cup this weekend, but in that spotlight they can maintain their hopes of a quarter final place. they need to beat romania tonight in lille from where our correspondent katie gornall reports. the atmosphere is building here in lille and scotland know what they have to do. they need to beat romania with a bonus point in order to keep
7:45 pm
alive their hopes of qualifying for the quarter finals and set up a decisive clash against ireland in paris in a week's time. here with me to talk all about tonight's matches the former scotland's number eight, johnny, whojoins me. thank you forjoining us. you made your debut against romania, didn't you? what do you make of this romanian side? the form book would suggest that they are going to be beaten heavily tonight. yeah, i made my debut in front of 12,000 people against romania, that was an indication of where we were as well as a country. we have moved on significantly. back then, romania had a bunch of top players. they have pro rugby in romania. they maybe not the strongest i'd come up with a certain want to give a good account today. they are looking for that bonus point. they need it to get out of their pool. but i expect romania to be better
7:46 pm
than they have so far. 13 in total. who do you expect to make their mark ahead of that game with ireland? a few boys. loads of changes. as like amos watson, who has been a massive part for the past ten or 15 years. looking forward to watching him play. the crosby, another has come through a different path may come up for grabs, spots in his final game in the hope of getting through to the quarters can everything to paper. two or three boys in the back row, but across the squad, loads to fight for estelle to finish this competition on a high and get out of this pool. how important is that? 0bviously they've got to get the job done against romania, but how much of a benefit would be to get some momentum as well going into that game? look, i think the performance with south africa, tonga was steady, bonus point win, but it was a pity, there were parts where we could've been better. looked more clinical, more emphatic, he won that bonus point, but once the performance to be really good. a spring in their step. lots to pay for, but everything now in the irish game will be absolutely huge. thanks very much forjoining us.
7:47 pm
we are edging ever closer to kick—off here. it all gets under way at eight o'clock your time. away from the world cup, several women's summer nations series internationals taking place this weekend. wales warmed up for the inaugural women's 15 tournament with a dominant win against the usa in colwyn bay... scoring six tries. england completed their preparations for the tournament with a hard—earned victory over canada; whilst scotland beat spain 36—5 in edinburgh you're watching sportsday. time for some of our other headlines mark williams is through to the final of the british open snooker in cheltenham. the 48 year old beat iran's hossein vafai by six frames to three and will meet the winner of tonight's other semi between mark selby and xiao gudong in the final. britain's elvin evans is currently fourth overall at rally chile. he's 33 points adrift of toyota team mate kalle rovanpera in the standings and needs to finish at least eighth to keep the title battle open
7:48 pm
with two rounds remaining. giro d'italia champion primoz roglic has announced that he's leaving thejumbo—visma team who've dominated cycling becoming the first team to win all three grand tours in the same year. the slovenian sez he won't reveal who he'll be signing until the end of the season. st helens are still on course to win the super league for a fifth straight time as they reached the playoff semi finals again. they beat warrington 16—8 in their eliminator maintaining their chances of winning the trophy and extending the career of a saints legend. imran sidat reports. all eyes were on when nana of kick—off, james is retiring at the end of the season in the st helens fans were hoping this wouldn't be his final farewell. the worries were soon eased and they began to take charge. james going to open the scoring in a tight first half. after the break, warrington came out with a new sense of belief and they were

rewarded almost immediately. connnor*s try getting them back into it. alex was sent to the sin bin for this high tackle. the home fans turned up the volume and the players responded. tommy finishing off this move putting the defending champions ahead once again. afterjoe was sent to the sin bin, warrington*s hopes faded as the saints marched the semis they will face the dragons with the fairy tale ending of five titles in a row well and truly alive. so there are nowjust four teams left in the race for the super league title. the semi final line up is complete st helens travelling to catalans on friday night, whilst hull kingston rovers play away at table—toppers wigan warriors on saturday morning all for a place in the grand final at old trafford the following week. new zealand have won the decider in their three—match netball series

against england to take the taini jamison trophy. england had been criticised for sending a squad of young players who hadn't featured at the world cup, but it was a close final game, level at 36—all in the third quarter, but the silver ferns eventually pulled away to win by 59 points to 52 and wrap up the series 2—1. england's cricket world cup warm—up against india was abandoned without a ball bowled because of rain in guwahati. the toss had taken place with india captain rohit sharma opting to bat first, before the rain arrived. england named 13 players, with bowlers chris woakes and gus atkinson missing out from their 15—man squad. their second and final warm—up is against bangladesh on monday, before they start their title defence against new zealand on thursday. back in 2021, frank rothwell became the oldest person to complete the solo cross the atlantic rowing challenge. he was 70.

now, despite having major open heart surgery and taking over a football club, he's going to do it again as he aims to smash his own record and raise another million pounds towards finding a cure for alzheimer's. his boat is now on its way to the canaries for the start in december and mike bushell went to see him in training. ready to make waves again, the 73—year—old who is always in fine voice. # i'm the kind of guy who will never settle down #. as he was back in february 2021, after spending months at sea rowing alone nonstop across the atlantic. and dealing with the worst the ocean could throw at him, making history and raising £1.1 million for alzheimer's research. since then, he survived a life—saving open heart surgery and bought his local football club, 0ldham athletic in the national league, where he has a very inspirational chairman.
7:52 pm
we need three points this weekend, we certainly do, so tonight, none of that, early night, i want you fully rested for a good day tomorrow. he is such an inspiration. you look at him, you know, i also want to be able to do these things when i am that age. this winter, frank won't only be waving goodbye to his team over the christmas period, but also his wife and family again, as he gets ready to row solo across the atlantic once more. aiming to beat his world record. owning a football club is bigger challenge than rowing the ocean. i've got an element of control with throwing the ocean, but with the football club, there are so many other things that i have no control over. and when he came in to antigua, he looked really well compared to what i thought he would look. mentally and physically. some people came in and they were quite struggling,
7:53 pm
but he was like within two hours, throwing the grandchildren in the swimming pool, wait a minute, you have just rowed the atlantic. so he soon recovered from it. while at sea, i will miss 13 games. so my representative, you will be there, i want you? so my representative, you will be there, won't you? you'll be waving the flag. alzheimer's research uk, the charity that i'm rowing for, going in for a cure. so i thought i could be part of that and since i've done it, there have been two trucks on the market that could stall, it delays its onset. while he has time away from football, he's been back on the broader training. 0n the lake north of rochdale. and some sage advice from grandson, frankjunior. it's going to be hard. he's three years older, he will be older. frank hasn't been back in a boat since finishing his last challenge, but he's not lost his stamina and at least knows what to expect this time.
7:54 pm
the biggest thing is missing family and your loved ones. we've been married for 53 years. love her to bits. last time, frank's fundraising at a huge difference to alzheimer's research, which is the driving force behind doing it again, especially after he personally lost a good friend to it this year. my mate, phil, died of alzheimer's this year, so it's been a real motivation seeing phil deteriorate from the person he was. i loved him to bits. an absolutely fantastic relationship we had. the next time frank will see his boat that will be in the canary islands, ready for the start in early december. i know how big the waves are and how warm it gets and how cold it gets, and the boredom. the wind blowing you along the way. 0r no wind at all. i didn't warn you about that bouy. i didn't see it.
7:55 pm
almost crashed me there. thankfully he won't have anyone distracting them and is 300 miles solo challenge, which this time he hopes to complete within 50 days. and so — to remind you, this is how things stand after a thrilling second day in rome. europe only need four points to regain the rtyder cup, but amidst the race for the trophy comes some controversy after the day's play had finished, words were exchanged between rory mcilroy and patrick cantlay's caddiejoe lacava. it's reported he didn't like the celebrations that ensued because both he and matt fitzpatrick still had puts to come. pictures have since emerged that show it spilt into the car park at the marco simone club with mcilroy having to be restrained by team—mate shane lowry. adds another layer of intrigue to the final day tomorrow.
7:56 pm
where the maths is in your*s favour. a five—point advantage. much more to come throughout the evening and indeed tomorrow on the single day of the writer scott. —— the ryder cup. that's all from sportsday. hello. after the bright but chilly start to the day, the rain has moved in as we've gone through the afternoon, moved in across northern ireland, northern england, much of wales, moving its way across scotland. you can see that cloud enveloping many areas, but in the south it's stayed mainly dry and in the north of scotland. but the north of scotland will catch that rain as we go through this evening. we will keep those pulses running across parts of northern england and wales, and actually, it stays mostly dry if a little misty and foggy in the south overnight. further north, once the rain clears,
7:57 pm
just a few showers. but look at the temperatures. it's very mild overnight. 14—16 celsius in the south is what we'd see during the day as we head into the start of october. and that's because we've got humid air moving into the south of that weather front. so it will be quite a muggy night as well and a murky morning, we could have some low level mist and fog, some fog over the hills as well underneath this band of rain. and we'll see further heavy pulses moving through. so for some parts of snowdonia and cumbria, we could see 30—a0 millimetres of rain falling. very different day for scotland and northern ireland. it'll be bright with a scattering of showers around here. temperatures 17—19 celsius. as i say, it is humid air. and if we do see the sunshine south of that weather front, 23—24 celsius for the start of october. then as we go through the evening and overnight into sunday, then we see that band of rain just creeping a little bit further south. but it never really gets really far south and clears the south east probably until tuesday. behind it, certainly a fresher night, but again, warm and muggy across the southern
7:58 pm
half of the uk. now the reason for that is because we're going to see another pulse of rain moving along that same weather front. so holding it up, slowing it from clearing away. but this time, because we've got so much muggy, humid air in train, there's more energy in the atmosphere, and we could see some really lively thunderstorms during the course of sunday night into monday, working their way across parts of england and wales. some real torrential downpours in places. to the north, another day of sunny spells and scattered showers. fairly fresh feeling here, but still quite warm and muggy and even underneath the showers and thunderstorms further south. now, that eventually clears out the way on tuesday. we'll see a dip in temperature briefly with sunny spells and showers to the north. but then later in the week, temperatures build in the south. bye— bye.
