hello, i'm mark edwards, welcome to sports day. here's what's coming up on the show. newcastle's sandro tonali charged by the english fa for alleged betting rules breaches afterjoining the club. we hearfrom manager nuno espirito santo is nottingham forest appeal their premier league points deduction. rybakina survives a second set meltdown to reach her second straight miami final. hello and thanks for joining us on sports day. we start with football and newcastle united midfielder sandro tonali has been
2:46 am
charged with misconduct by the english football association for alleged breaches of betting rules. having signed from ac milan injuly 2023 for £55 million, tonali was subsequently banned for betting on matches involving his teams, brescia and milan. this charge, though, relates to alleged bets since he moved to newcastle. andy swiss has more. sandro tonali, remember, joined newcastle last summer, but he's only really played a few times for them because in october last year he was banned by the italian football federation for ten months because he'd broken betting rules at his previous clubs in italy and that ban was extended worldwide. so he hasn't been able to play for newcastle since then. now today, the english fa have also charged him with alleged breaches of betting rules. these charges relate to separate allegations during his time as a newcastle player. the fa alleges he broke its rules by placing 50 bets on matches between august and october last year.
2:47 am
now newcastle have issued a statement saying they acknowledge the charge and that in their words, "sandro continues to fully comply with relevant "investigations and he retains the club's full support." now although tonali can't play for newcastle, he can continue to train with his newcastle team—mates and he has until 5th of april to respond to the charges. nuno espirito santo has told his nottingham forest players to forget about the club's points deduction for breaking financial rules and to focus on their battle to avoid relegation. forest were docked four points on the 18th of march, which dropped them into the premier league relegation zone but have appealed against the decision. colin hazelton has more. it has been a busy old couple of weeks here at nottingham forest and in the time since we last heard from the head coach, nuno espirito santo, the club have been docked four points for breaching financial rules, had a very public debate with fans and pundits weighing
2:48 am
in on it about whether to appeal against that four point deduction, and decided to go for an appeal to fight back. so when we heard from nuno today, we asked him whether that just created more uncertainty. no, no. that's another thing. something, again, that we cannot control. so let's wait and see. what we can control is what we are doing. we receive the players from international duty. we work very hard and very well during these two weeks of break. and we are ready to go play, play. that is the message that comes out of clubs so often when they're affected by these kind of points deductions. what the football people want to do is to be able to control what happens on the field. and certainly as far as forest are concerned, they've got hopes of lifting themselves out of the bottom three with back to back home fixtures. and that, they insist, is what they're focused on now. now staying with that story,
2:49 am
everton manager sean dyche says he's not sure why nottingham forest received a four point deduction for their breach of premier league financial rules, given that everton made fewer losses but were initially docked ten points before their appeal. his side are just four points ahead of forest in the table. i don't know the minutia of our own, let alone theirs. you know, when you're in that room and the way they decide things, maybe there's different reasons when it started that you know, the facts you give like that, it sounds really obvious, but i can only imagine there's more depth to it, which is why they gave them that point deduction. but on, on its simplest form, yes, of course, i think everyone is, well, how does that work? i think the last one jolted everyone in football. so i think really we're just waiting now because i don't think anyone has concrete proof of how which way these things will go and particularly after the first one. so i think it isjust, you know, from our point of view, we can only give the information that's appropriate. i wasn't there, obviously,
2:50 am
but so i'm told we've given every bit of information that we can give and hope that they see accordingly what the clubs have been trying to do to make sure within the right areas that they need us to be in. so therefore, we'll hope that it comes to nothing. the german bundesliga is back on saturday following the international break, with bayern munich hosting borussia dortmund in der klassiker. england captain harry kane is expected to be fit for bayern after missing england's two friendly internationals with an ankle problem. kane has scored 31 goals in 26 games since his move and needs ii more to beat the bundesliga record held by robert lewandowski. translation: i think it's an extraordinary quota that harry kane has in his first season at bayern. he scored 31 goals and i think he's had another six or seven assists, so he's extremely important for them in attack. we felt it ourselves, notjust since he's been at bayern, but also when he was still at tottenham. we also played against him a few games back then when he was there. we know all
2:51 am
about his qualities. it's an extraordinary quota when you look at it. i think he scored as many goals on his own as our top three players put together. there will be a repeat of last season's women's champions league semifinal between barcelona and chelsea. that's after the spanish defending champions came through their quarterfinal with norwegian side brawn. catalan club were already 2—1 up from the first leg. they eased to a 3—1 win on the night, 5—2 on aggregate. meanwhile, paris saint—germain are also heading through to the semi—finals. they thrashed swedish side hacken 3—0 on the night, 5—1 on aggregate to set up a tantalising all french tie against lyon in the last four. to tennis and world number four elena rybakina admitted she wasn't at her best after edging a very tight contest with victoria azarenka to book her place in her second straight miami open final. she is into the final, but i had to do it the hard way. the 2022 wimbledon champion

recovering from an awful second set to win 6—4, 0—6, 7—6. her composure seeing her dominate the former world number one to take the deciding tie—break, 7—2. alexander zverev is into the last four of the men's miami open with a hard fought victory over in—form fabian marijan. zverev, ensuring the hungarians pair of top ten wins didn't turn into a hat trick. having defeated hog aruna and alex de minaur en route to the last eight. marin, though unable to force his way past the world, number five is into his third semifinal of the season and zverev taking the match 6—3,7—5. marizanne, though, will move into the top a0 in monday's atp rankings. i mean, i love miami. i always said that. obviously, i'm happy to be back at these kind of late stages of these tournaments, you know, playing the best players in the world. i think there's only only those left. and i'm looking forward to the challenge. now, finally, for any

footballer playing for your country can be life changing. and that's especially true for those involved in the homeless world cup. the tournament in south korea this september involves 70 countries with players who've all at one time or another had to sleep on the streets. a film inspired by the tournament starring the actor bill nighy has just been released as he has been. that is the one i told you about. the beautiful game, a film about the homeless world cup, a global tournament for players who've all experienced living rough. starring bill nighy. and here he is with the real england team, offering a few words of gentle encouragement. the film is about something i didn't know anything about, which is called the homeless world cup. and i — you're allowed to laugh — i play the england coach. you're about to represent your country.
2:54 am
so officially supplied by the fa itself, when you put on this shirt, you're putting on the history of the beautiful game. the thing that makes the homeless world cup so effective is that you can, you know, young men, for instance, and young women will be attracted because it's about football. people like courtney. well done, courtney. let's go. who has had more than his fair share of ups and downs? playing football, coming here, i forget about everything in life, right? i have fun. we don't think about stuff? i could say it's helped and it's helped to try to avoid the homelessness because i'm out here keeping fit. so if i'm out here doing something, i'm not at home doing stuff that i'm not meant to be doing. if you enjoy football, come out, come out and they'll put a smile on your face. what can we say about that? and courtney is just one of the 500 people that is hoping to go to south korea in september to participate in the homeless world cup. namibia. and this was also a moment

for bill to meet the real england manager, frankie, whose job as coach is about more than just tactics and training. it's not just always about football. we do like we deliver like 30% of football. we do like 70% offering support because some of them they need to access to education, access to different services. we represent england and we would like to bring the trophy, bring it home. the beautiful game, a celebration of how football really can change lives. look at that, boys. look at all these cameras. yasmin rifai, bbc news. and that's all from us here at the bbc sports centre. from me, mark edwards and the rest of the team. we'll see you very soon. bye bye. hello there. well, with british summertime just around the corner, thursday was a stark reminder ofjust how fickle
2:56 am
british weather can be. yes, we had some snow, some of it settling for a time in northern ireland on thursday. it was a wild day, wet and windy for many as well. and in fact in wiltshire we had over a0 millimetres of rain in a 24—hour period. now it's all due to low pressure that's anchored itself to the southwest and that low is still going to be with us during the day on friday. the showers, hopefully few and further between, in comparison to thursday's weather. and we'll start off on a relatively quiet note for good friday with a few scattered showers around, but they'll become more widespread as we go through the day, drifting their way steadily north into the afternoon. so some of the showers could still be quite potent from time to time. the winds quite blustery, but with a little more sunshine, a little more warmth, 9 to 14 degrees celsius our overall high. move out of good friday into the start of the weekend
2:57 am
and it looks likely that saturday and sunday will continue to be a little bit quieter. the low just shifts further away, the isobars open up, the winds will fall light. we'll need to keep an eye on this frontal system, which could bring some rain towards kent, and perhaps suffolk, first thing on saturday morning and maybe a little more cloud. but generally, it will be a quieter day, with more sunshine coming through, showers more isolated. there will be some moving through scotland and maybe a longer spell of rain across the channel isles and down through south west england by the end of the afternoon. but temperatures in the sunshine, 15 degrees — a pleasant day for many on saturday. easter sunday continues with that quieter story, perhaps more frequent showers out to the west on sunday. but on the whole, there will be some drier weather from time to time, with some sunshine, and again, some warmth, with temperatures around 13—15 degrees quite widely. so as we move into monday, though, easter monday, we could see a change to something a little bit more unsettled once again, with low pressure never too far away. and we will see some spells of wetter weather, particularly across central and southern england. so looking further ahead from monday onwards, that unsettled theme is set to continue.
2:58 am
longer spells of rain never too far away. take care.
