specifically, the judges daughter trump lashed out after judge juan rashawn imposed a gag order on him in the case, the former president called machines daughter, quote, a rabid trump hater on truth, social. federal judge reggie walton told cnn's kaitlan collins, it's extremely difficult for judges to do their jobs it's when their families are being threatened >> it's very disconcerting to have someone making comments about a judge and it's particularly problematic when those comments our in the form of a threat especially if they're directed at one's family i mean, we do these jobs because we're committed to the rule of law and we believe in the rule of law and the rule of law can only function effectively when we have judges who are prepared to carry out their duties without the threat potential of physical harm. >> have you been on the receiving end of more threats since you've had the january 6 defendants in your court yes,
5:01 am
i've had more threats than what used to be the case. yes, i have received a greater number of threats as a result of that incident. and the fact that cases arising out of that incident have appeared before me. i mean, it was rare. i've been a judge for over 40 years and this is a new phenomenon, not saying that it didn't happen before, but it was very rare that i would ever receive any type of a threat regardless of what type of cases i was handling and unfortunately, that is no longer the case. i know the marshals service has seen a significant increase in the number we're threats against judges and i think obviously that's very, very, very concerned >> it's rare that we get to hear from a sitting federal judge. but obviously this is a gravely important issue. i wonder what made you speak out tonight and speak publicly?
5:02 am
>> well, i know i am concerned because like i say, we have had judges who've lost their lives or family members have lost their lives as a result of individuals who have been litigants in their courtroom and i think it's important in order to preserve our democracy kristi, that we maintain the rule of law brand, new >> pictures from inside what is being billed as the biggest political fundraiser ever. but that title not might not be held for long we have a new claim this morning, and then jail for journalism, new reporting on the future for reporter evan gershkovich, one year in prison today the album is out now the new secret messages and beyonce's lyrics i'm john berman was sara sidner, fredricka whitfield is in for kate today. this is cnn
5:03 am
news central >> this morning. >> big money energy. you didn't know that was a thing. >> that is what >> democrats are putting off after a blockbuster event overnight, we're getting a look at cheers from inside the event that raised 26 million, though it was a closed events, we're only getting still pictures and reporting from insiders about what actually happens. cnn's or let signs live at the white house. luckily, we have you to tell us what went on because of course we don't have moving video from closed fundraisers >> yeah, john and president biden's advisers are really hoping that this show of force from democratic presidents last night will help build momentum as this election is kicking in to high gear, the campaign touting the fact that they raised more than 26 million from this one night events loan and they're hoping that this
5:04 am
will add to the cash advantage that they currently have over former president donald trump as they're gearing up for that november fight. now, president biden, president obama, and president bill clinton spends about an hour with late-night host stephen in cold bare, really laying out the stakes of this election, trying to warn of the threat that trump poses to the country. they never named trump by name according to the reporters who were there in the room, but they did issue very stark warnings. president biden saying that democracy is at stake and pointed to the january 6 insurrection saying that there there was no president in the united states that day as trump sat here at the white house, as that unfolded, the president also said in his remarks, quotes were at a real inflection point in history. this guy's denies global warming. this guy wants to get rid of not only roe v. wade, which he brags about having done, he wants to get rid of the ability of anyone in america have the right to choose all the things he's doing. there are so old, a little old, and out of shape.
5:05 am
and the campaign also has provided a video from last night reporters who were in the room were not allowed to record any video from this event. but the campaign is trying to highlight a bit of a lighter moment i've trained president biden and cold bear. take a listen >> maganov, milwaukee feeds vegas hot lana, the philly suburbs, manchester, dallas, and houston. donald trump as far as we can tell, has just been trying to win a third champion in ship and his own golf course. >> my question to you, sir, >> can voters trust a presidential candidate who is not won a single trump international golf club trophy. at long last, sir, have you know, chip shot? >> we'll look i'd be happy to play. i told him as before when he came into the oval, when he was being as before he gets sworn in. i said, i'll give you three strokes if you carry your own bag but jokes aside, the
5:06 am
fundraiser also laid bare some of the frustration within the >> democratic party over the president's handling of the conflict between israel and hamas, hundreds of pro-palestinian protesters gathered outside of radio city hall before and during the the events and the presidents were actually interrupted several time from protesters in the hall itself, some mostly protesting the war in gaza, but also one relating to russia. and it was notable that president obama took a moment to address those protesters, as well as biden did. and obama said that they need to notch let's talk, but also listen. he said that just talking is something that the other side does. it really highlights the fact that this is an issue that the democratic party will continue to grapple with heading into november's election. now the president is continuing his push in new york city today, he's expected to meet with top donors at a spring retreat of the biden national finance committee is senior campaign officials. i'm told will also be briefing top
5:07 am
donors on their strategy as they're really trying to have this all hands on deck moment as they're preparing for that face off against trump in november let's signs at the white house, i have to say the old and out of shape line and the joke about donald trump carrying his own bags or i hadn't heard those >> before actually. and that's an interesting twist pivot, yeah, for president buying to try to turn the issue of literal fitness into a campaign issue for donald. that's what >> you call a burn. i think it's got to sag looking if the kid say burn and guess what, there's a bit of a response here, donald trump's campaign is confident they say that they can surpass biden's $26 hall sources saying the trump campaign hopes to raise $33 million at a fundraiser next week. what is unclear this morning, whether or not former first lady melania trump will be there. she's pretty much been largely absent from the campaign trail that may seem change. kristen holmes is joining us now what can you tell us about this april 6th
5:08 am
fundraiser >> here's we'd previously reported on this fundraiser is going to bring some of the biggest gop donors to palm beach for what they say is going to be record numbers. they say it's going to be more than 33 million. as you noted, but again, it is still early we are still waiting to see what actually comes in and they've released those numbers on a day that biden was announcing that he was raising more than 25 million. but this is significant really for three reasons. one, overarching when you talk about more than $26 million and talk about more than $33 this is setting up to be one of, if not the most expensive general elections in history. >> but there's >> also particularly significant for donald trump for two reasons. one, as we have reported, he has been facing somewhat of a cash crunch on the campaign trail. they are bleeding money out. this is going to help them even if it's not $33 millions of dollars from some of the richest gop owners are going to help the campaign. the other reason why this is so
5:09 am
significant is the fact that we had seen so many of these big donors really turning their back on donald trump, or at least sitting on the sidelines during that primary season, waiting to see who the nominee was or in some cases, just hoping that there was going to be an alternative to donald trump. what this signifies is that the republican party is really coming around the former president. they have decided that this is their candidate and they're going to back that up financially as well >> you've got some news reporting now about the role that millennia may play, because we haven't been seeing her on the campaign trail recently well, the role of her is still a big question mark. i mean, that's what the reporting is right now. we still don't know what role she's going to play. we've seen her on the campaign trail 1.5 times and i say half times because one of the times we saw her was when she was casting her vote in the primary in florida, she was alongside her husband. she did speak a few words. she said, stay tuned when she was asked whether or not she was going to be back on the campaign trail. so i give her a half for that. the only other time we've seen it on the
5:10 am
campaign trail was during his actual announcement back in november of 2022 at mar-a-lago, which is where she lives. she wasn't even present at his super tuesday event, which is arguably the biggest event he has had so far, which was also at their mar-a-lago home. now, sources close to the former first lady say she determines when and what she does on the campaign trail and they don't have any insight into whether or not she's actually going to join until she does. in fact make that decision. >> it's pretty unusual that the spouse of the former first lady is not by his side for all of these things will have to wait and see what happens. kristen holmes. thank you so much, fred. >> all right. >> one year. how detained american journalist evan gershkovich's family and colleagues still pushing for his release from russia >> and >> hundreds of thousands of cars under a brand new recall this morning because there's a risk that they could roll away queen bee goes country beyond, say, dropped her new album overnight will be unpacking the musical eastereggs julie the

5:16 am
hope for his release. we've been alice, josh rogan. he is a columnist for the washington post. joshua. thank you so much for being here. what are the reasons i love reading and listening to you is your blunt. you call it like you see it and when you look at the last year, you call vladimir putin a kidnapper here >> well, that's right. i think there's two things going on. one is that vladimir putin is a criminal, a a gangster, and one of the things he does is he sends murderers and weapons dealers around the world to commit crimes. and then when they get scooped up and put in foreign prisons, he captured some foreigners and tries to make a trade. and that's straight up mafia behavior. but at the same time, he's also a dictator and he ever since he came into power, but especially since the war in ukraine began, he's been crushing dissent inside of his country by rounding up foreign journalists, russian journalists, dissonance anyone who talks about the war at all in a way that he doesn't like.
5:17 am
and this is what dictators do. they combine external aggression with internal repression. every single time. so when you think about putin in those terms, on the one hand, a gangster who's committing crimes and then tried to get his criminal henchmen back into the fold and secondly, as a dictator sure, who's tried to battle something greater called the truth. you can really understand why this situation is as bad as it is. >> is his kidnapping working? >> well, i mean in putins mind, he has consolidated control. he is thoroughly proper guy, propagandizing his own people he has driven western journalists out of russia, western ngos, and so in his mind, i'm sure he thinks it is working the problem of course is that the truth can never really be suppressed. that eventually it will get out even inside of a closed society like russia and over time that people will realize that they're being lied to so it's
5:18 am
a, it's a losing game in the long run, but meanwhile, the people who paid the price are innocent people, not just that been who is did nothing wrong. but paul whelan, a former marine vladimir kara-murza, washington post contributing columnist whose sense to 25 years in prison radio free europe, radio liberty, dual citizen. i'll sue chroma shiva and countless others. so yeah, putin may think he's winning in the short term but in the long term, all dictators eventually lose. in the long term and the moral arc of the universe, which bends towards justice is martin luther king said journalism is not a crime in the universal sense, though it may be criminal in russia right now, what do you think the prospects are for evan gi well, i think the good news for evan and his family and his colleagues is that >> we have seen that even though us-russia relations are in a low point, even though there's a war going on, these deals can get done and they
5:19 am
operate somewhat on a separate track, largely in private for good reason so there is a pattern and a history of these deals getting done even under these crazy circumstances where these two countries otherwise don't really talk to each other. the bad news is that it's going to likely take a while because putins pattern is that's a maximize the suffering of the hostages and their families in order to maximize his leverage at the negotiating table. and so the pattern that we've seen is that usually the deal comes after the conviction that's not always the case, but it's sometimes the case. and as we're now saying, big by evans, fifth pretrial detention extension, we don't even know when that when that sham trial is going to even begin. so i think there's a good chance that everyone will get back to his family. we just can't say when josh rogan. thank you so much for doing what you do and for being with us this morning. >> appreciate it. >> anytime sarah. all right. ahead. an invitation no one would want house republican dividing president biden to

murray presiding over this trial, but it's not clear how long it's actually going to last there that is because there's a lot of speculation given the fact that democrats view this as really without evidence that they are going to move to swiftly dismiss it. now, it's not clear what action they're taking and conservative senators are imploring majority leader chuck schumer to have a fulsome trial arguing it's important for the country, but this is what we heard yesterday from schumer's office. you got but this guidance that certainly schumer has some major questions given the fact that in the past he has said that this was a sham, that there's no evidence. so it's still a huge question how long this trials actually going to take on the senate floor, sarah? >> and then there's the other impeachment inquiry house oversight chair james comer has invited i did president biden to testify publicly in front of his committee looking to impeach the president the impeachment inquiry has really stalled. is this a last ditch

diller is wake. yet next week, trump wants to make it his goal to raise something like 33 million billion dollars at a florida gala. so not elitist here. i mean, what what is his message or the goal >> his message is all over the place. he can't decide which one he wants to be angry at biden for outraising him or having this event and then also wanting to compete with him. i mean, if it win for trump, which i say this recognizing that this is unfortunately been viewed just your political lenses. was those headlines where it was biden clinton and obama, have glitzy event and trump attends the funeral, have a fallen hero. >> he >> wanted that headline and i say that because that's who john trump is. it's not looking out for we, the people. he's looking out for himself and that fundraiser next week is about himself because rnc is bleeding money and his campaign is also now having to be tapped into where he has to sell shoes. he has to sell bibles
5:41 am
because he's not been a person who wants to out to make donor calls, but he's going to have to now because he needed the money a bakari, the latest cnn poll of polls is continuing to show a very tight race. trump is 47% biden at 44%. so will it be about money raised facetime add time? across the country? i mean, what's it going to take before you've got a widening of the gap between them >> look i i love, love, love seeing in with all my heart. i hate, hate, hate polls right now. pose right now mean absolutely nothing. cnn polls, hartford polls, milwaukee pose any law center polls, barbershop polls? none of them really matter right now. >> it's just >> too early to tell. i mean, holes are a snapshot in time. they may show you some warning lights are flashing lights here and there >> but but really >> both campaigns, i mean, like like my my analysis of this race is simple, has always been
5:42 am
simple as donald trump is joe biden, and it's the couch. this is not a persuasion race. this is a gotv race. and joe biden has to make sure that people don't want to sit this race out if they make sure they folk on the fundamentals i think of getting voters out. i think the person who does that best will win this race >> mora trump has yet to pick his running mate, florida republican representative byron donalds. name is in the mix. cnn k files reveals examples showing donalds you know, it hasn't always been a fan saying in a facebook post in april of 2011, according now, trump is a huge distraction and cares more about himself and the country in my opinion, but but i could care less about him. i mean, donalds made that in relation to trump's claims that obama's birth certificate was fakes. so what's changed now between trump and donalds? >> it's idea that it will benefit them to get behind trump. i mean, that's really what you're seeing for so many
5:43 am
of these members who have acknowledged the the cancer that he is on the republican party. but have thrown that aside just for themselves. they put their ambition in in front of their governing and we're seeing that play out with so many of the members of the republican party who have just pledge their full loyalty to donald trump and that part's really hard to wrap our head around, but typically is point i think just looking at the poles and looking at this race, it is about fatigue and people are frustrated and yes, these fundraising number is 26 million hopeful, 33 million next week but then in the context of somebody sitting at home saying, i'm exhausted by this because that's what it looks like. they're just spending this money to fight against each other. what are they doing for us, for we, the people. i think that's the biggest question for people at home and and whether i guess about to vote, we'll see all right. >> we'll leave it there the car were reading your body language, so i know what you're thinking and feeling like re sellers mark gillespie. thank you so much, john, right hot
5:44 am
off the presses, brand new inflation data, cnn's matt egan is here with me to explain what it says well, john, this is one of the most important economic reports we get all month big implications for everyone at home and also for officials in washington. the new numbers out show that pce, this is the fed's food inflation gauge up by two-and-a-half percent year over year. that is a touch hotter than it was the month before, but we knew that was going to happen. this is right in line with expectations reflects higher gas prices month over month 0.3%. that's actually slightly cooler than we expected. why do we care about this? number one, because the fed watches it very, very careful fully, but also because it impacts all of our wallets, right? the higher inflation is, the more financial pain that we feel. let's look at the line chart to see the trend here, because that's really important as we know inflation spiked after 2020 this metric got above 7% at one point, above 7%. look at this improvement all the way down to two-and-a-half percent number
5:45 am
the fed wants to percent two-and-a-half is not 2%, but this is among the cools inflation readings that we've seen in the last three years. and so i do think that shows two things. >> progress >> against inflation, but also that, that fight against inflation, it's not quite over yet, john. >> yeah, it also, it's not some clery and message. one where the other here, it's not making the fed's choices easy. >> it's not, it's not. so the fed also looks at core inflation, which excludes food and energy as they tried to make decisions on in, on what they do for rates. and we saw the core inflation year-over-year 2.8% that was cooler, 0.3% month over month. that was closed and month before. so moving in the right direction they are cooler than expected. the question is, what does the fed going to do next, right? the fed massive interest rate hikes. they've been on hold since then and they say they need to see more confidence that inflation really is under control before they start cutting. i don't think today's number is going
5:46 am
to change their decision either way. i don't think that this is gonna make them cut earlier or stay on hold any longer? i think that this is something that's going to play out in the next few months no rate cuts likely until june at the earliest, at least if that's what you at least if you believe what the markets are saying, hello today getting close, june is getting closer every day. >> maddie, thank you. >> so much for that, sarah. >> it's a bracket foster john, the first number one seed falls a story underdog victory as march madness, find the sweet 16 and what we are learning about the very dangerous job of delivering aid to gaza, american troops now getting added protections as they build a dock in gaza to try and help will have the story coming up emergency >> crystals pop and fizz when you throw them back. and who doesn't love a good throwback?

they're on their way right now to the eastern mediterranean to start constructing this doc that's floating dock as well as the causeway that is going to be necessary to provide some of this humanitarian aid to gaza via that maritime corridor. it has been operating over the last several weeks or so and once it is fully up and operational, the us military says that it is going to be able to provide roughly 2 million meals per day too. got to palestinians in gaza. so it is going to be significant once it is actually up and running. but there are a lot of questions here about the logistics of just how it is going to operate. and importantly, how the us military harry is going to be kept safe. these roughly 1,000 troops who are going to be there setting up the system, how they're going to be protected from potential attacks from hamas and from other terrorist groups who are operating in gaza. that is something that us senators have been pressing the white house and the pentagon on for weeks now, trying to get their plan for both the rules of engagement that the us military
5:59 am
has once they're operating there. and of course, what kind of security is going to be present there. and we got some answers yesterday from the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff who told reporters that israel has indeed committed to helping to protect the us troops who are going to be they're conducting this operation because they are going to be pretty close to the shore there. and of course, there are risks involved in that, but there are still a lot of questions here about who is going to be distributing the aid once it actually when it gets to the shore, the us has said repeatedly that the us military is not going to have any boots on the ground in gaza, but still, there are questions about how they're going going to distributed, including whether local palestinians are going to be doing it, for example, with oversight from a un body. and importantly, how close the israel defense forces going to be. two that entire process making themselves as well, of course, as the us military of potential target, hard target there for terror groups to want to attack the us and its allies bread. so a lot of things still
