tv   The Story With Martha Mac Callum  FOX News  March 29, 2024 12:00pm-1:00pm PDT

12:00 pm
no wonder year on a shrink's couch. we've got to return to him. we have to return to him. >> martha: such a powerful message as we head off into easter weekend. >> that's right and hopefully we spend time with our families and loved ones. it's time to refresh and restart the tech start anew. >> martha: great to have you here. thanks for jumping in. that does it for us. i'm sandra smith. >> the story with trace gallagher in for martha starts right now. >> good afternoon. i am trace gallagher in for martha maccallum and this is the story. moments ago maryland officials providing an update on the. let's check in with national correspondent riff jenkins live on a boat near the scene. what are we learning?
12:01 pm
>> as you can see from the camera conditions or bad. the winds are more than 25 miles an hour. there's potential gale force wind warning a little later in the afternoon and that's why governor westmore moments ago talking about why the conditions are too dangerous for the divers. the water along with debris under there to recover those bodies. another highlight is he talking to the difficulty." get out of the way and show you. the difficulty of moving the dolly. it sits right in the middle of that channel. that's what's closing the port. what's comp looking at his you see the trestles of the key bridge collapsed and governor moore says they will have to get the trestle looking 3,000 tons so they have to cut the trestles into sections in a safeway and bring them off so they can begin to move them out of the way then move the ship. that's why such a monumental task.
12:02 pm
we also got news from others maryland centre chris van hollen who said more help is on the way. listen here. okay we don't have that just yet. just happened but what they were saying was there is going to be more cranes coming. we know the largest crane on the east coast chesapeake 1,000 is here. sitting across the river. more on the way and that's the 20 needed so desperately. we think it could be may be weeks and not a month or so until we can actually see this channel open up and that's only the first step than they have to move the ship in québec to recovery operations. >> trace: very quickly any chance they have a plan to unload the dolly before they actually move the ship or no? >> we've been trying to find out if they had any plans to take anything off that ship. there's 56 containers that have the hazardous materials and just wrote an hour ago with even
12:03 pm
rough water we could see that slick machine on the water when you look on binoculars close to the bow of the ship but were not aware of any plans to take containers off. what they really want to do is just tow it out of the channel because it's a narrow channel and have to get the debris in the ship out of there to get ships in and out. >> makes sense. riv jenkins back to you as the news warrants. thank you. new trouble for boeing after a door plug blew out in the middle of a flight. attire fell off during takeoff and the ceo announced he is stepping down at the end of the year. now united flight from san francisco to paris had to land in denver after an engine issue. airlines as everybody got off safely. it comes after the tsa screened almost to .8 million people yesterday. 1 of the busiest travel days of the year with easter and spring break in full swing. dan springer senior correspondent is live in seattle with more on this.
12:04 pm
>> just to clarify this plane was delivered by boeing to united over 2 decades ago so this is more of the united issue than boeing at least this particular issue. flick 990 landed safely in the denver airport just before 11:0. as we take a live look at the denver airport an official says emergency crews were assembled just in case but were not needed. a spokesperson tells me the airline is still working to get the 273 passengers on that flight to their destinations. they're headed from san francisco to paris on the boeing triple 7 on the flight crew reported an issue with 1 of the engine. no further details on the issue. the decision was made at that time to divert to denver although this is not being called an emergency landing. boeing united have had a string of mechanical problems in the last couple of weeks including an engine fire near houston and the noise united flight that lost a tire just after takeoff
12:05 pm
from san francisco. both of the planes were built by boeing and the response the faa is investigating boeing's a some the operations and united's maintenance practices. last week the head of corporate safety of united issued a statement saying in part we stepped up our interactions with the faa recently. they agree we need to take an even closer look at multiple areas of her operation to promote and drive safety compliance. the plane diverted was delivered by boeing in 2001. there's some 2,000 boeing triple 7 in-service worldwide and it's ever been safe to fly right now. 1 death for every 13 million boardings. >> trace: that's very true. dan springer live in seattle. let's bring in kyle bailey a pilot aviation expert and former faa safety team representative. great to have you on the show. dan makes a very good point. this plane is 23 years old.
12:06 pm
that's a lot of cycles. you've got to go back and think maybe it's not even united issue. the engine thing as a rolls-royce issue or ge. is boeing getting a lot of blame for things they might not be blamed for? >> i think at this point boeing and united are being blamed for a lot of things. the whole world media is scrutinizing both of these companies and that combined with social media videoing everything premature out of control. it's very much the perfect storm of media converging on these companies. >> it is an dan made a point because you look at safety issues and i don't boeing's had transference issues and clearly made some mistakes but we are in the safest era of aviation in the history of aviation and that really doesn't come into account a lot. >> could they be 2 complacent with the safety record? but even with united 990 flight the chance of an engine failure
12:07 pm
on an airplane is about 1,375,000 hours, and in reviewing this flight path this airplane went up for 33,000 feet. everything was pretty much normal, look like normal descent into denver. there is no indication of any engine shutdown or failure. it could have just been some issues on the pilots gages he was reacting to. as the latter portion of the flight would have been over water. so he is taken proper precaution. >> i want to get your take on this because washington post is reporting you can filter boeing out of your flight search going on to say travelers can include or exclude certain aircraft models from flight search such as boeing 737 max 9. a kayak spokesperson said usage of the 737 max filter increased threefold in the days after the alaska airlines incident. is there an indication era busses any safer? is this kind of a lot of hype? what you make of this? >> the interesting thing is we
12:08 pm
are not seeing these problems on airbus aircraft and if i was the ceo of boeing on the ceo of airbus possibly i would say let's kind of have a safety consortium and pretty much pool the things that we are doing right and share that. i'm not saying giveaway trade secrets but get together with big manufacturers and share best actresses. they're all pretty much benefit in the long run from that i think. >> trace: i think it's good point. kyle bailey great to see you. thank you for coming on. we appreciate it. >> trace: president biden's lavish fundraiser with past presidents and the angry protesters who disrupted it. watch tent the story from

>> trace: president biden thinking his campaign for helping him break fundraising record with 26 million-dollar event at radio city music hall featuring former president obama and clinton plus other celebrities. the president also face pro-palestinian protesters both outside and inside. watch. >> shame on you joe biden. shame on the. you have blood on your hands!
12:14 pm
blood on your hands! >> trace: here's part of the president's response. according to reporters quoting there's too many innocent victims israeli and palestinian, we have got to get more food and medicine and supplies into the palestinians. israel is in a position where its very existence is at stake. you had almost people. they were not killed. they were massacred. with that let's bring in guy benson host of guidance and show , lee carter pollster and president and robert will former economic adviser to president obama. founder and ceo of 32 advisors. he's also fox news contributor who is that the president's fundraiser at radio city last night so that means will start with you robert. every fleischer says that democratic party is the party of the rich. watch. >> fact of the matter is democrats have become the party of the rich. the democrats actually defeat
12:15 pm
republicans now among those who earned more than $100,000 a year those are democratic voters that used to be republican. republicans have to work real hard and it's a wake-up shot to anybody who wants republicans to win that they will have to contribute and work hard because the democrats hold the cards. they've got the advantage. >> no doubt you are among a bunch of rich people and a lot of so liberties last night at radio city. >> comms director spins things well. i don't think mar-a-lago is a homeless shelter. and i think there event next week is mainly done by billionaires. last night event had 5,000 individuals there. the seats went as low as $200. so it was a great event. it was electricity in the air. the democratic parties more portly to have 3 presidents standing up there. 1 president trump couldn't get his vice president to sit on the dais with him so great night for the democratic party. >> you talk about you run
12:16 pm
numbers a lot and it's interesting because you talk about 25, 26 million-dollar take at radio city music hall last night and biting clearly has more money but you look at the poll numbers and all that money will not get those poll numbers up. it may be a little bit but it's on to be very tough to improve the poll numbers the matter how much you raise. >> it's not all about money. if it were in 2016 hillary clinton would have won. but i think that it's naïve to say that money doesn't matter. especially when you look at getting out the vote and how important that's when to be in this race. the down ballot races. so there's no surprise donald trump is really making a push to raise his own set of money but i think what's significant about the event last night was a protesters. is much as we sit the democrats are part of unity, 3 presidents all standing together there's a huge fraction of the party standing against them and that could really help the third-party candidates. that's a big problem for the democrats. >> trace: guy benson the protesters really seem to be having some impact because you see where joe biden was 3 or 4
12:17 pm
months ago and he's changed his tune dramatically to the point where he saying these protesters have a point in some of the people on the right and some of the jews in america are like what's going off? >> the pandering to this crowd has gotten deeper from the biden administration. i just saw a report that they have greenly more funds to israel more warplanes, more explosives. that's a good move but then you see the administration talking on the other side of its mouth to try to appease this element of the race." want to make 1 point here about what we heard from these protesters and we played it before the break that montage, so many of their chants involve the word genocide, accusing israel of genocide in the united states are being complicit in genocide. it is an absolute lie. it is not true. it is a slander. there's great piece in newsweek
12:18 pm
this week published by 1 of the top experts on urban warfare in the world at west point and he explicates how the israeli military has set a new standard in urban warfare that's reduced in a totally unprecedented way, reduced civilian casualties. israel goes out of its way to avoid that tech the opposite of genocide and it really bothers me to see the word abused over and over again. >> would you argue with that because he really makes a very fair point. this whole concept that israel didn't fight for 6 weeks. they dropped flyers. israel has tried to get these people out. israel is sending food in. israel has done everything can sometimes the peril of its own fighters to make sure they don't go after civilians and what is egypt doing? what is jordan doing? what are the rest of these countries doing that they should be doing to protect the palestinians? >> i appreciate you asking that. as someone who is jewish and his family was impacted by the holocaust.
12:19 pm
i absolutely believe that israel has to make sure that they have safety and security. i believe hamas can be their neighbor. with that being said of course we need to make sure we get humanitarian aid to gaza. i agree with with what guy and tracy are saying. we should be able to have some camps in egypt and jordan that are taking some of these individuals who are truly in harms way with the war happening. so i'm all for making sure that we have the right balance but israel needs to be able to defend themselves. >> back to the numbers because the polls in the middle east conflict, who you side more with now, israelis 15% palestinians 20%. israeli 60% can't palestinians 18%. the numbers are shifting. >> the numbers are shifting it it's shifting to be more with younger demographic. i think that's what robert of cannetti junior is trying to capitalize in this moment and that's why he chose vice president candidate.
12:20 pm
i think it's because very antiwar. >> i have 15 seconds to wrap us up. >> i think he see numbers changing because they're heavily changing among democrats and younger voters and a lot of their being driven in or drawn in by genesight talk which is completely factually untrue and it's weird to see joe biden being accused of complicity and genocide and sing a have a point. they don't have a point on that front. >> trace: they don't. guy catley and robert thank you. the wall street journal speaking volumes with cover story today. it has been 352 long days since reporter evan arrested, detained in russian persian and what 1 of his colleagues calls are brazen act of hostile diplomacy. >> russian authorities detaining us journalist.

>> wall street journal marking 1 year since the arrest of reporter evan gershkovich. with a blank space in the headline's story should be here, russia accuses of spying. the journal and white house denied that and both are demanding his immediate release but russia just his detention again until june. the journal's world covered sheath gordon fairclough will join us in a moment but first to alex hogan live for us in london. >> as we mark this grim milestone the family of evan gershkovich specifically his sister speaking with fox saying the family continues to monitor how he is and he remains in good spirits despite the fact it has been 12 months that he's been behind bars. the 32-year-old was arrested in this time last year when he was in a work truck accused of being a spy but russia is given no evidence to support those
12:26 pm
claims. white house denies these accusations cling him wrongfully detained. the wall street journal posted an article describing of thing with evan has missed and lost in the past year like the weddings of friends from high school and college, time with family watching his favorite teams play the jets and arsenal football club. instead he meets with his lawyers once a week and he spends 23 hours every day in a cell apart from 1 our or he is allowed to stretch his legs in a small courtyard. washington says moscow is using americans as bargaining chips. so 1 year and there is still no trial date set for evan and as you mentioned his sentence has been extended 3 more months that he will have to wait behind bars. >> alex hogan live in london. thank you.
12:27 pm
let's bring in gordon fairclough wall street journal world coverage chief and evan's boss. gordon great to have you on the show. it's clearly a devastating blow to a free press and just seems like as the days go on that we the wall street journal, the united states, we have very little recourse. what is your take on that? >> yeah, it's really kind of a chilling milestone, you look at the level of hostage diplomacy that we see today, countries that russia urges taking captive to try to trade them for geopolitical gain and with the russian judicial system it's so opaque, it's very hard to tell what's even going on with them. >> when you talk about geopolitical gain i'm just wondering what is it? what does russia have to gain from this at all? >> it's not something the wall street journal can give him, give them. they want something from the us government. russian officials have been pretty lunch from the get-go
12:28 pm
that they want to trade, they want a trade for somebody they want to get back. >> trace: his sister had this to say. watch. >> i know whatever i'm experiencing it's tougher for evan. he's an accredited journalist on assignment from the wall street journal so he's an innocent man behind bars. i love my brother so much. i miss him so much. >> i think the family and everybody is wondering the same thing. are there active negotiations going on right now? is there a deal being worked on and any stipulations? is there at least some activity we can point to? >> we don't know a lot of the details. this being talks between governments but we do know united states said late last year that they had made an offer to russia in an effort to bring evan and paul whelan home.
12:29 pm
the offer was rejected. we know from alexei navalny's supporters that there were some talks involving potential swap with navalny evan and paul for russian spies detained in the west. >> trace: we get information, just talking about he's in the sell for 23 hours a day and a small courtyard for 1 hour, meets with his lawyers." getting personal information? do we know how he is, his health? his mental state? are we getting some of this from over there? >> we hear from his lawyers in the us diplomats who occasionally are allowed to meet with him. a judge, or in hopeful in his letters, it's quite clear he's retained his sense of humor which is especially strong, and i think i hope that's an indication he's hanging in there okay, but it's an awful feeling.
12:30 pm
we catch little glimpses of russian courthouse before his hasselbeck to the christian where russia has kept political prisoners since communist era. >> glasses they keep saying the possibility of this sentence being extended may be indefinitely is very real. what you make of that? what's your instinct? is there a timeline, do you think it will be extended and we are in the final weeks and months of this? >> generally you see around year of pretrial detention in russia. this is a special case. ambassador carstens special envoy for hostage affairs is looking at this optimistically that if they've extended his pretrial detention for another 90 days may be there's hope that a deal be struck within that time.
12:31 pm
we certainly hope so. it's been a year now it's too long. evan needs to come home. >> gordon fairclough thank you for coming on. >> 2 horrific acts of violence in a single he put new york city's crime crisis back in big-time focus. >> we are losing correction offices and district attorneys. we are losing police officers, probation offices, losing school safety agents. every piece of our public safety apparatus that the everyday working-class person wants we are seeing it all of a sudden he rode and we are going to lose the foundation of our prosperity is public safety woah, a lost card isn't keeping this thrill seeker down. lost her card, not the vibe. the soul searcher, is finding his identity, and helping to protect it. hey! oh yeah, the explorer! she's looking to dive deeper...

12:37 pm
it today on the popular iheartradio program the breakfast club adams was criticized for exaggerating crime problem and exaggerating officer diller's matter. >> we want to sensationalize and highlight and point out our officers killed the other day which is a rare occurrence across unite states but let alone new york technique police officers have killed at least 7 this year include 19-year-old. >> i'm not going to dismiss the loss of a life of innocent person there was uniform to protect us. >> it's not just mayor adams who is facing progressive pushback for his attempts to go after crime. so is near governor kathy hochul who attended a week for officer diller today. she's proposed going after the epidemic of retail theft in the state by proposing tougher penalties against criminals who assault retail workers. but new york's democratic state
12:38 pm
assembly leader carl heastie said of that plan quote i just don't believe raising penalties is ever a deterrent on crime. overall crime is down 2% in the city but rob reese, assaults and transit crime are all compared to last year. just this week a man was shoved and killed by an oncoming subway train. in an effort to help people feel safe mayor adams unveiled a pilot program to use body scanners at some ways to try to catch weapons. mayor adams says mental health and repeat criminal offenders or problems that can only be truly solved by the democrats who control the state legislature but obviously it will be tough because they don't see eye to eye when it comes to solutions. >> trace: they don't. brian thank you. let's bring in retired nypd lieutenant joe karen alley running for the state assembly is republican. it's great to have you on. i don't know if you heard the exchange with radio host in new york city mayor eric adams saying listen, you know, the killing of a new york city
12:39 pm
police officer is rare compared to the number of people they kill. it's astonishing somebody would say that out loud. what do you think of the kind of mentality? >> that's the sickness on the other side. that's the sickness we face every day in policing. we have city council counseling challenging the police department. they don't to anything to correct the problems between the 2 sides. police department is stymied at every level. then you have them taking indemnification away from police officers. i often wonder how many times the cops will second-guess themselves on move they have to make that may lead to fatal consequences. but the radio host is a disgusting way to portray nypd police officers. it is disgusting. >> trace: i can't even fathom the whole thing. mayor eric adams keep saying the city is not out of control but also acknowledges the safety apparatus of police officers. all the safety people in the

instagram and tiktok. it's a city, it's a stores closing in the city that smells like pot 24/7. there's clearly some issues there that are not being addressed. >> the quality-of-life issues are the ones that have to be addressed. businesses leaving in record numbers from new york city. we can get them back. already out of the city and they will not come back under these conditions. but i applaud mayor adams returned to get this new technology but why we trying to reinvent the wheel when it comes to policing? let the cops get out there and do the jobs they are paid to do. is very basic thing. enforce the law. creek keep the criminals in jail but the other side doesn't see that. there's bail reform. it's wrong. she needs to do something about it and hopefully come the next election will have the numbers to do it. >> hatakka numbers. you say that you are, you want to be a voice for the voiceless. is anyone listening? the keyboarding the same people in. is anybody listening to the
