>> oh yeah. let's get over to abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel tracking what we need to know. sandhya. yeah. ama and j.r, this is a storm that's going to leave its mark. let me show you the storm impact scale. because it is stronger than the last one that came through. it's a level two for tomorrow. rain will be heavy at times. there's a chance of thunder and hail and gusts 45 plus miles an hour over the hills. we're talking about 50 mile an hour winds. it's a level two. and what's going to happen is this area of low pressure right off the pacific northwest coast is going to merge with this area of low pressure off the northern california coast. the two together will bring some strong winds. we'll bring downpours. here's a look at when. 8 a.m. tomorrow. the rain begins. it intensifies at three in the afternoon. the showers continue well into the evening. a wind advisory covering a large chunk of the bay area. 8 a.m. tomorrow until 5 a.m. saturday. those wind gusts 45 to 50 plus miles an hour means the potential for power outages and downed trees. you can see the winds really ramping up, especially as we head towards the afternoon. and with this comes the possibility of thunderstorms. the entire bay

ryan curry shows us why these women hope to inspire the next generation. >> said there is no limit to what we as women can accomplish. >> meet yesenia sanchez, misty carausu and mckenzie whitten. serving their communities is not just a job. >> it just like called to me, and it was just being surrounded by people who were doing good work. i just wanted to be a part of that. >> as the first woman ever elected as alameda county sheriff, sanchez says she never let anything hold her back. >> it doesn't matter how tall or short you are, because i'm not even five feet tall. you could totally do it. you got to challenge yourself and never, never tell yourself that you can't. >> thursday night, the city of alameda honored many female firefighters, police officers, and paramedics for their service. many of them say their colleagues are mostly men, but they believe there is a vital role for women. >> they do a lot of work. they put their heart, their compassion. they can lead with every like with love. so to get there, i mean, we have to just support our girls from small age all the way up.

>> the women we spoke with tonight say they want to send a message to any young girl out there. they too can become a firefighter or police officer or anything related to public service. it's a message they hope reaches far and for years to come. >> it was in my internship that i worked with a female firefighter that inspired me to know that this is something i could do. >> mackenzie whitten was raised in alameda. she loves being able to serve her town. she hopes to inspire young women the same way she once was. >> we would love to see future generations coming forward. we have a few women in the process. in the next hiring group, so taking them on as mentors, letting them know, any challenges and how to best overcome those is just kind of sharing that information. >> there is a nationwide effort called the 30 by 30 initiative. it's an effort to get at least 30% of the police force to be women by 2030. alameda wants to take it a step further. they want to have at least 30% in all their public service departments . their message to other young women keep believing anything you can dream of, you can do. >> don't be afraid to pursue a new career field if it's something you don't see yourself

reflected in, you could be that person. be that change you want to see in alameda. >> ryan curry, abc seven news. >> yeah, that is so true. and some of you may recognize lieutenant caruso. she has received national attention after appearing in netflix's american nightmare documentary earlier this year. it explains how she helped crack the case of a vallejo kidnaping that police had first considered a hoax. >> some are tired of the nightmare markets where people buy and sell stolen goods and deal drugs, and those people have installed a fence around one san francisco business because of it. it's at mcallister and leavenworth, where uh- s uh- a seco bakery that is located. it even has a code to get in our media partners at the san francisco standard report, the department of public works issued a permit to a homeowners association in the fence appeared this week and was finished today. >> they are building a better bay area is what we strive for here at abc seven, and a major piece of that is traffic safety. >> yeah. our first breakthrough

we want to highlight is a new bill introduced today to address this very issue. i'm here today because of one simple but devastating fact. >> traffic violence is the number one cause of death for california's school age children. it's not disease. it's not guns. it's not drowning. it's getting hit by a car. >> the bill is called the safer school zones act, authored by assembly member mark berman of san mateo. it aims to make new street reforms in school zones across the state. the main one lower speed limits to 20mph or less. >> we wanted to dig into the numbers on this. there are currently 39 states that have a maximum school speed zone statute like this. california is one of only nine states where that speed limit is greater than 20mph. >> however, in both oakland and san francisco, the school zone speed limit is 15mph, but many other cities across the southeast and north bays have limits. at 25mph. >> our next abc seven building a

better bay area breakthrough, led us to the south bay. we found a proud local organization fighting for what it feels is an inequity in federal policy, and the policy has to do with menthol cigarets. there's a national ban on the table for this type of flavor. even thought it was, even though that is, it was banned in california in 2022. one south bay group says it's still a matter of saving lives. abc's the decision on whether to ban menthol cigarets nationwide is still up in the air. >> studies show the menthol market has targeted black communities, local leaders say federal action on a ban is needed now. for one public health official, it's personal. every day matters. >> uh- the black community has been disproportionately targeted. my father was a smoker in his young life. he got through college partially by getting a scholarship from the tobacco industry to distribute cigarets to his college friends in the 50s.

>> in october, the fda proposed rules to the white house to ban the manufacturing and sales of menthol cigarets. the biden administration then delayed a final ruling of the ban from december to march. now it's almost april and the ruling is still undecided. >> i think this is an equity issue. i think this is an issue that we want justice and we want fairness. some studies show under a menthol ban, overall smoking would be projected to decline by 35% in 2026. >> it could save 654,000 lives over the next 40 years. that translates to more than 200,000 premature deaths averted in the black community. >> we want to keep it in front of the legislators mind. >> the president of the naacp, san jose silicon valley, agrees. banning menthol cigarets nationwide will save lives, the opposing argument says goes beyond public health. some civil rights groups worry about unintended consequences, like unfair policing, knowing that

it's going into an election year , i would think that, president biden and his staff would probably. to secure more votes at the cost of lives. >> so we want to change the trajectory of this and prevent access to menthol so that we, as black people, have just as much opportunity to have a healthy life as other races in the south bay. >> lauren martinez, abc seven news our final abc seven building a better bay area breakthrough is the new $10 million plan to keep workerssa . >> the ceo of oakland's fourrgeg forces blue shield of california, kaiser permanente, p-g-and-e's and clorox are creating an uptown downtown safe zone with increased private security. it will also establish an ambassadors ambassadors program, fund employee safety training, and subsidized transportation for employees to and from work and transit hubs. the program will be rolled out in the coming weeks. >> now to that parking lot

protest out at the oakland coliseum. while the a's were playing their first game of the year on opening night, there was a large group of fans making a statement by not going in. the official team announced attendance inside the ballpark was 13,522, but as abc seven sports anchor casey pratt explains, the real story was outside. >> thousands packed the parking lot. there was live music, there were giveaways, there were flags everywhere. fans were fired up and the whole goal of the evening for the fans was to show that they care, but not go inside the coliseum. if you look at the attendance, 13,000 for an opening night, that is very low. but these fans proved that they're still here. >> yeah, you know, i would have liked to seen all those guys inside the stadium tonight. you know? but, you know, they're fighting for something. they believe in, you know? and so at the end of the day, you know, as long as they're supporting us, you know, in whatever way that may be, you know, whether it's inside the stadium or watching the game outside, you know, as

old wine country politician is breaking his years long silence after allegations of sexual assault from multiple women cost him his job. the former mayor of windsor won't be facing any criminal charges after being accused of sexual assault. >> california's attorney general announced there was a lack of evidence against dominic foppoli, so the investigation was suspended. foppoli broke his silence nearly three years after the allegations first came to light. he spoke to abc seven news from his home in italy with his fiancee by his side. he denied any wrongdoing and says he feels vindicated. >> i'm sure the attorney general had a tremendous amount of pressure to find something, anything to charge me with. so, i want to thank them for having the courage to finally make the statement. >> foppoli plans on returning to windsor. meanwhile one of his

accusers, who wishes to remain anonymous, says she's disappointed. >> and it just feeling like, you know, you hear the same passed around about the good old boys club. and it just feels like a lot of, you know, protection and delays that felt really purposeful in our eyes. >> foppoli was also investigated in nevada, montana and florida over sexual abuse allegations. no charges were ever filed in those states. >> former cryptocurrency mogul sam bankman-fried was sentenced to 25 years in federal prison for one of the biggest financial fraud cases in history. his parents, who are law professors at stanford, sent the judge a letter prior to sentencing, according to our media partners at the mercury news, they described him as smart, empathetic and motivated to only do good. judge wasn't having any of it during sentencing, saying, quote, he knew it was wrong. he

knew it was criminal. bankman-fried's parents issued a short statement. it reads, quote, we are heartbroken will continue to fight for our son in the north bay. >> a whooping cough outbreak is spreading across marin county. there have been 113 cases since december. the majority of them, 65, have come from tamalpais high school. >> typically starts off very nonspecific and very mild with a runny nose. it could be a sore throat or even just some fatigue a couple days or even up to a week later is when the cough starts. >> doctors recommend getting tested if you feel sick. if it comes back positive, isolate while infectious. for teenagers, whooping cough isn't very serious, but for other ages, like infants, it can be deadly. >> we don't give the pertussis vaccine until babies are about two months old, so if they were to get this illness before that vaccine, it would be a much more serious illness. marin county health officials say so far, no cases in infants or hospitalizations have been reported. >> pope francis was back on his feet today to preside over holy

take a look at live doppler seven right now, because we have two areas of low pressure that will merge, and that storm is going to come in as one system. >> we're going to get slammed tomorrow though. so here's a look at the concerns. minor flooding on the roadways. it's going to be a high likelihood downed trees in that moderate category. same thing with power outages and lightning risk will be high as we are looking at a threat of thunder tomorrow. a live view from our sutro tower camera. we did get some rain in the last 24 hours, picking up 6/10 of an inch in santa rosa, 2/10 in san francisco, oakland. just under that you will notice san jose and concord less than that in redwood city, 2200 kentfield and ben lomond picking up over an inch of rain. so we did have some spotty showers today. taking you back the last 12 hours on live doppler seven. you can see them just really coming and going, but we really overall enjoyed clouds. son. below average temperatures right now on live doppler seven. we do have some clouds around, but it is dry out there. temperatures in the 40s and the 50s at this
