it is great to be here on this friday morning with eva and gio. this is our act one. we got a lot of news to get to as we head into the holiday weekend. >> eva: we begin with the latest on that investigation into the deadly bridge collapse. >> gio: there are new images from inside the cargo ship that crashed into the francis scott key bridge as the next phase in the recovery shifts into high gear. elizabeth schulze is on the scene with the latest. good morning, elizabeth. >> reporter: good morning, gio. this is now an around the clock effort by rescue workers to clear the debris of the collapsed key bridge and that container ship so that this vital port can reopen. maryland's governor said at times the water is so dark and murky that divers can't see more than a foot or two in front of them. this morning four days after the catastrophic collapse of baltimore's francis scott key bridge, the task of clearing the wreckage is under way. the u.s. navy sending three giant cranes to the scene to help remove debris from the steel encased dali cargo ship.

>> for the first time we are getting an up close look at the scale of this wreckage. really the striking to see the size of this container ship. >> reporter: the army corps of engineers mobilizing 1,000 personnel. general scott spellman showing us us the damage up close. >> we have to get that section of bridge that is resting on the front of that vessel off of the vessel. >> reporter: that steel weighs nearly 9 million pounds and will be cut into four part. each piece lifted one by one. >> behind you you could see a concrete tower, reinforced concrete tower. you don't see one on this side because it's in the water. that's all resting on the bottom. >> reporter: investigators are pouring over the data recorder outlining a timeline of the five minutes before the disaster. new video from the ntsb shows investigators examining the containers. 56 of them contained hazardous materials. floating barriers deployed around the ship's hull.

>> there is no risk to the people, and we ensure that both for the first responders but also for the people inside the area. >> reporter: six construction workers who were on the bridge when it collapsed are presumed dead including a man shown here in a video message he shared with family on the way to work a few months ago. his brother carlos tell us he was a happy person. with a big heart. opening day at baltimore's camden yards the orioles honoring the victims and three heroic officers who saved countless lives by halting traffic before the bridge collapse. >> let us join together in a moment of silence for those who lost their lives. >> reporter: the federal government released $60 million in emergency funding that will serve as a down payment to cover the immediate cost of reopening the port. it is just the first step of what will be a costly and time consuming effort that will ultimately take years to build. gio?

>> gio: years indeed. all right, elizabeth, thank you very much. i just got back from baltimore. when you see this bridge in person and the size of it, it's unbelievable that it came down that quickly. thank goodness for those three officers who were there. less than two minutes is all they had to prevent people from getting on that bridge. >> rebecca: thank goodness for their quick thinking. your reporting there was great. thank you. >> eva: truly heroes. the race for the white house and last night's high powered fund-raiser for president biden. former president clinton and barack obama joining forces with the president to tout his record and raise millions. mary bruce is here with more. good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning, guys. good to see you all. this was certainly a critical night for president biden's reelection campaign. unprecedented fund-raiser with three living presidents sharing the same stage. the biden campaign bringing in the heavy hitters and star power to give his campaign a boost. this morning the biden campaign is celebrating what it's touting

as a historic night. a star studded fund-raiser at new york's radio city music hall raising a whopping $26 million in a single night. president biden sharing the stage with his two democratic predecessors, barack obama and bill clinton. in conversation with late night host stephen colbert. big name stars coming out including queen latifah and lizzo. seen here in video shared by the dnc chair. >> we got three president in the building tonight! that sounds like a p-p-party to me! >> reporter: with no tv cameras allowed inside the campaign selectively releasing just one clip taking a shot at rival donald trump. >> can voters trust a presidential candidate who has not won a single trump international golf club trophy at long last sir had you no chip shot? >> well, look, i'd be happy to play. i told him this before when he came into the -- before he got sworn in. i said, i'll give you three strokes if you carry your own

bag. >> reporter: according to reporters in the room, all three made the case that trump presents a dangerous threat to american democracy. but they also tried to energize voters around biden's record, highlighting his bipartisan legislation to lower prescription drug costs and investments in american manufacturing, with steps to combat climate change. the record breaking event bringing in more money than trump raised all last month, with tickets selling for $225 to half million dollars. but the fund-raiser also highlighting one of the biggest challenges facing the president. protesters outside and inside the room. many calling for an immediate cease fire in gaza. accusing the biden administration of aiding genocide interrupting the show at least six times. in response to those interruptions, president biden said there have been too many innocent victims and more aid needs to get into gaza. he highlighted his support for a

two state solution. despite the protests the biden campaign hopes this sold out event will help energize the democratic party as the president continues to run neck and neck with trump, guys. >> rebecca: we know you will be following it every step of the way. mary, thank you. mean time, former president trump was also in new york attending a wake for a new york police officer who was gunned down in the line of duty. rachel scott has more. good morning, rachel. >> reporter: good morning, rebecca. yeah, donald trump was eager to try to draw a contrast with president biden and that star studded fund-raiser just a few miles away, meeting with the family of an nypd officer who was killed in the line of officer. officer jonathan diller was shot during a traffic stop monday. the 31-year-old was rushed to the hospital where he died leaving behind a wife and 1-year-old son. the former president attended the wake for diller but also used it as an opportunity to call for a crackdown on violent crime, telling reporters the country has got to get back to law and order. trump did not provide any specific details on how he would combat crime. fbi data does show a drop in violent crime nationwide.

it is also worth noting as the former president continues to push for law and order, he also has expressed deep support for the riders that stormed the capitol on january 6th. many of whom were convicted for brutally attacking police officers that day. of course trump himself is now being charged with 88 criminal counts. >> gio: thank you very much for that. we're going to turn to trouble on the tarmac in minnesota when two delta planes clipped wings on one of the busiest days for spring break travel. it is the latest incident at one of our nation's airports raising questions about safety. this morning the faa investigating two delta planes colliding. the two air bus a320 planes clipped wings at the st. paul international airport. >> just startling boom and then the most violent shake i have ever had on an airplane. >> reporter: according to delta, the incident occurred during push back from the gate of one of the aircraft around 10:45 a.m. involving some 271 people

on both planes. troy jackson was traveling to see his family in arizona. >> we were taxiing. all of a sudden just a big jarring bump. >> reporter: there were no injuries from the collision. following the incident, both planes returned to their gate so passengers could deplane. delta apologizing and saying they were working to re-accommodate customers to their final destinations. this incident coming just one day after people were evacuated from a frontier flight in charlotte for an unidentified strong odor. passengers seen here exiting the plane down these slides. frontier airlines saying, we extend our sincere apologies and concern for those impacted and are investigating the cause of the incident. the faa says that it is very focused on runway incursions, investing more than $100 million last spring to reduce them. nobody was hurt in this latest incident with delta, but there is a real fear that something really bad could happen if we don't stop this from happening again.

>> rebecca: they got to get to the bottom of this. okay, gio. thanks. we turn to the stock market, closing at an all-time high. closed for good friday today. stephanie ramos joins us. when trading resumes on monday, investors are going to be watching to see if the dow can break 40,000 points for the first time. >> absolutely. the dow jones industrial average closing at another all time high of 39,807 that's fewer than 200 points from the 40,000 mark. not to be outdone the s&p 500 also closed at a record high, closing out its best first quarter in five years. so what is driving the market? interest rates have yet to come down. but last week the fed sill signaled that it is still on track for three rate cuts this year. and while rates and inflation remain high, the u.s. economy has proved to be resilient and the job market remains solid, with february numbers exceeding expectations, rebecca. >> rebecca: lot of hopes for interest rates to come down especially if you're trying to

buy a house. we're starting to see gas prices creep up again, stephanie. >> we are. the average cost of a gallon of gas nationwide is $3.53 a gallon. that's up $0.22 from a month ago. with demand high, those prices are expected to continue to climb, rebecca. >> rebecca: okay, stephanie. thanks for getting us updated on all the money news. now to pope francis, keeping a full schedule throughout this holy week despite recent health issues presiding over good friday mass this morning. foreign correspondent james longman has more. good morning to you, james. >> reporter: good morning, eva. easter is the most important time of the year for christians. despite his cold and flu symptoms and mobility issue, pope francis is presiding over easter celebrations this weekend. he was in good form at the washing of the feet ceremony a ritual that seeks to emulate jesus watching the feet of the disciples the night before he died. the pope is the first to take these rituals out of the church,

from the broadway stage to success on the silver screen he was the first black man to win an academy award for an actor in a supporting role. that was for "an officer and a gentle man" opposite richard gere. he most recently appeared in "watch man" with regina king garnering an emmy nomination and reimagining of the color purple. louis gossick jr. was 87. we turn to sam bankman-fried, sentenced to 25 years behind bars for stealing billions in a massive crypto fraud. aaron katersky, you've been on this story from the start. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, rebecca. sam bankman-fried cast himself not as a financial serial killer but an awkward math nerd looking to do good. the judge was having none of it. once lauded as the wonder king of the crypto who kept the company of the rich and famous, this morning sam bankman-fried begins a 25 year

one victim telling the judge the money which i wanted to spend on a family home taken away, as well as my children's education. in addition to the 25 years in prison, bankman-fried was ordered to forefit $11 billion to compensate victims. one of the stiffest white collar sentences handed down in years and reflected the judge's worry bankman-fried could commit another fraud. there's a risk that this man will be in a position to do something very bad in the future, and it's not a trivial risk. now he will be taken to a low or medium security prison, likely near his parents in northern california. rebecca, the judge said sam bankman-fried may be a lot of things, but he is not a risk of being violent. rebecca? >> rebecca: as you say, aaron, he's serving the second longest sentence in prison for white collar crime. that is after bernard madoff, who served 40 years. gio? >> gio: incredible. all right, rebecca. now the crackdown on squatters. lawmakers in several states are taking action to protect

homeowners. zohreen shaw joins us from los angeles with that story. good morning. >> reporter: if you own property it is important to know the laws in your state. you got to be pro-active if you see someone in your home who should not be there. some homeowners now have help, with lawmakers stepping up. homeowners versus squatters. incidents like this one in new york uncovered by wabc are pushing lawmakers to do something. >> you shouldn't be trying to steal my house! yes, you are! >> reporter: in florida wednesday, governor ron desantis signing a bill into law to help homeowners get squatters out of their properties. >> what the squatters know is even when they are not wrong, it's a massive process many times before they can be evicted. >> reporter: the new law allows property owners to request law enforcement immediately if a squatter will not leave. city after city, it is a scene playing out repeatedly across the country. >> they came in through the back

the u.s. navy sending three giant cranes to the scene to help remove debris from the steel encased dolly cargo ship. for the first time we are getting an up close look at the scale of this wreckage, really striking to see the size of this container ship. the army corps of engineers mobilizing 1,000 personnel. general scott sullivan showing us the damage up close. >> we have to get that section of bridge that is resting on the front of that vessel off of the vessel. >> reporter: that's vessel weighs nearly 9 million pounds and will be cut into four parts. each piece lifted one by one. >> behind you, you could see a concrete tower, reinforced concrete tower. you don't see one on this side because it's in the water. that's all resting on the bottom. >> reporter: federal investigators are now poring over the ship's voyage data recorder outlining a timeline of the five minutes before the disaster. new video from the ntsb shows investigators examining the containers.

american college of card kwrol skwreu annual session finds eating a dozen eggs a week may not negatively affect your cholesterol levels. researchers followed 140 adults age 50 and older who have heart disease or two risk factors and put them into two groups. those who eat two or less eggs and those who eat more than 12 mortified eggs. those are the eggs that include extra vitamins. after four months cholesterol levels were checked. no meaningful change in the levels of hdl, that is what's known as good cholesterol, more ldl, the bad cholesterol. between the two egg group, before changing your diet, of course, experts say you have to check with your doctor. eggs are incredibly popular around easter but egg prices keep increasing. over the last several months they went from $2 to $3 in february. experts do expect the prices to come down in the coming months.

erielle reshef joins with us that story. good morning, erielle. >> good morning, rebecca. you know the longevity space is a crowded one. researchers the world over have been on a quest to find the holy grail of health. one professor says that studying populations in his native italy with its pocket of sent centanarians helped him formulate the regimen he believes can help people live to be over 100. 56-year-old walter longo is a former grunge band guitarist turned professor. >> it's never too late to make a switch. >> reporter: longo is the director of the longevity institute at the university of southern california. and author of the best selling book the longevity diet which looks at the connections between what you eat, how you eat and living a long life. >> a medical doctor talked about living to 120. but then i also say how difficult it is to get to 100. >> reporter: longo developed something he calls the fasting mimicking diet, a short term low

calorie diet designed to induce the potential benefits of real fasting recently publishing a study which claims to find that this kind of diet reduced markers of aging in mice. but that doesn't necessarily mean the same is true in humans. >> by doing five days of 800 to 1100 calorie, we are very very far from starving the body. we're just starting to push the cells into reset mode. if you go too long you can slow metabolism and start having problems. and if you go too short you never entered this reprogramming stem cell activation. >> reporter: beyond the occasional five day fast mimicking, longo represents eating a verge of the popular mediterranean diet with health benefits supported by years of research. >> so many of the ingredients keep coming up and are associated with longevity, longer life span are high levels of legumes, whole grains, nuts,

different type of tree nuts and low levels of red meat and even white meat, at least until age 65 or 70. >> reporter: while no medical or diet intervention guarantee a long life, diet and lifestyle and genetics can play a role in longevity. >> now different people will do different things. for those who don't want to change, at least they will take 15 days a year and do this. >> reporter: again, experts say there is no study that has found a silver bullet to slow the aging process. though longo says hi goal is to live to be a healthy 120, 130, he admits even reaching 100 is hard to achieve but he is hopeful that his methods and his research may get him and all of us a little bit closer. rebecca? >> rebecca: that would be nice. okay, erielle, thank you very much. we want to bring in our medical correspondent dr. darien sutton. nice to see you, dr. sutton. how much of this is real? >> there's a tremendous amount of studies going on in this world of longevity.

this concept of mimicking fasting has grown in popularity. it's relatively viral. it's based off of that idea, where you just fast or restrict your calorie intake for a few days a week, five days for a couple times a year. that's supposed to be associated with not only improved healthier lifestyle, but also in general decreasing your risk of death or premature death, disease. i will say although the studies are promising, by most standards a lot of these studies are limited. you always have to have caution whenever someone is coming to you with straight forward problem to a complex solution. so i think that is what we should take away from it. >> rebecca: reminds me of that idea of just a crash diet to fix something. people want to live longer. they want to spend more time with their family and friends. and live well. what are some ways to do that? >> focusing on the basics. my thing is don't overcomplicate it. when you're trying to make a plan about how to live longer, there's some key things you need to do. number one, understanding what you're most at risk for. within the united states, heart disease is the number one risk

of death or killer. number one reason people die prematurely. you avoid eating ultraprocessed foods. staying active, maintaining a balanced diet, avoiding too much added sugar. most importantly, getting the appropriate amount of sleep. these are key ways we know are tested and trued in order to live healthier and longer. >> rebecca: sounds like scientists are spending more time looking at these methods? >> that's what we were having a discussion about. just how are they going to figure this out? you can't change something you can't measure. the first step in figuring out, how do we find someone's cellular health? lot of the results and testing is on dna. that's absolutely fascinating. beyond that how do environmental factors play into that? hopefully we'll be able to see more research to help us make better decisions. >> rebecca: we'll hear more on it from you, dr. sutton. ginger, over to you? >> ginger: i'm thinking about tree rings. haven't we studied about those forever? and we don't know about human cells? we got a lot of work to do. how about boston? thanks, guys. how about boston?

sheryl, welcome back to gma. >> thank you. thank you for having me. >> eva: congratulations. you are going to see evolution, the title track of this album. i'm curious how this title came about? >> well, you know, i have two boys, they're teenagers now. the things they talk about are so much more worldly than what i was worrying about when i was a teenager. with the advent of artificial intelligence and reading about the beatles and the george carlin thing. it's a little -- for me it's a little overwhelming. i didn't grow up with social media or technology. trying to navigate what that's going to mean for us wanting to know the truth and how everything is algorithms and raising kids. i just -- the only thing i know how to do is go to my guitar with a note pad and just try and figure it out by thinking about it and expressing. that's how the album came about, really. >> rebecca: kids drive off to school and i would be like, what's happening? [ laughter ] i don't know what to do.

>> gio: i heard you actually didn't want to put out a new album. what changed your mind? >> i did say i'm never putting out another album because i can't control what comes out of my mouth. [ laughter ] i feel like people don't listen to full bodies of work any more like a conventional artistic thing like an album. so the last album which was very collaborative, felt like a great book end. i would continue to put songs out. i wound up with a handful of songs that i felt were so timely that i kind of feel like, instead of an album, i feel like it's more of a play list. i'm calling it a play list instead of an album of new music. >> rebecca: have your sons listened to this play list of new music? >> i heard most of it. somist, like alarm clock, they loved. then broken record, they were like, no. [ laughter ] they're tough critics. >> gio: you've been here so many times.

the last time you were here was just before rock and roll hall of fame. it was a huge night. >> i'm much different now. [ laughter ] >> gio: yes, you are. yes, ma'am. >> sam: we're not worthy. it was so amazing. i'm curious what you remember of that night? it was a huge night. >> i have never been married but i feel like it was kind of like a wedding where you're like, oh yeah, oh yeah. you know? it was a monumental evening but also a really important moment in my life. not to mention the fact that i had all the people that have been with me in my career, like 30 years. all the people that have been with me from the beginning. i also had my kids there. to have them kind of witness the world that was before them. when they came, i put everything aside and i still do music but they're my world. so they got to kind of witness the world that was before them.

but also to sing with stevie and olivia. peter frampton, he was my first concert. it just was a fantastic night. to sing with willie who, for me, one of my favorite people on the planet. it was an amazing night. >> eva: can you talk about your friendship with olivia rodrigo? you played with her in nashville. >> she invited me to come up and do "if it makes you happy." i said kid, but she's a grown woman, obviously. i think of her as a kid because i'm old enough to be her dad's older sister. [ laughter ] she's just a great young woman. she knows who she is. she doesn't sing to be -- she knows how to navigate the social media thing. i look at her and i go, she has friends that are not famous. she keeps her world as her own world.

she's a great pointed of view. when i said you remind me of the breeders, she said i love the breeders. she shouldn't be able to remember the breeders. but yet she has authentic references. i love that. i love that. >> rebecca: i love the breeders. [ laughter ] i'm not just saying that. you have gone through your own evolution. i wonder what advice you would give to young talent coming up now and facing some of these things that you sing about? >> i wouldn't be doing what i'm doing if i had to navigate this world where you promote you as a brand and that your art is something that is a side -- i don't know. it's hard for me to grasp it. it's the same thing i tell my kids. turn the noise off. the authentic self that you came in as is not only enough, it is beautiful and perfect. and that anybody else that is

defying that is not in your corner. it's difficult. i didn't let my kids -- in fact, my 13-year-old isn't on social media, my 16-year-old has snapchat. it's yucky, for lack of a better, more astute word. it's just a really yucky world to navigate. even somebody my age gets their feelings hurt. that was the whole point of writing "broken record." at a certain point we do have to remember that what was built into our dna, which will never be in artificial intelligence, is empathy. also feelings. you know? it's easy to hurt other people's feelings. >> sam: i love you so much.
