protests on campus and field of broken dreams. a's fans trying to keep the team in oakland take their message to the team's new temporary ballpark. abc seven news starts right now. >> always live abc seven news starts right now. >> a celebration today of a car free street in san francisco. and now new efforts are gaining traction to make streets safer for pedestrians. hi there, and thanks for joining us for this early edition of abc seven news. due to american idol, i'm dionne lim. it's been four years since that stretch of jfk drive went car free. abc seven news reporter suzanne fawn is live for us now in golden gate park, with the celebration. and suzanne, there's actually another effort underway to further improve safety on our streets. >> you're definitely right. and dion, such a beautiful day out here. now jfk drive and keeping it car free is definitely cause for celebration today. but some

people say a lot more work needs to be done to make sure that the city streets of san francisco are free from injuries fourth birthday, jfk promenade for many, it's another beautiful day at golden gate park, but on this day with bikers, strollers, runners, even a pedal powered vw bug hundreds of people came out to celebrate another year that jfk drive has been car free. >> we're really excited to have a car free space in san francisco. this was a dangerous street. now all it does is spark joy. >> parents like tammy two are grateful for the safe space. >> it's really awesome because you get a ride, feel safe with your little ones. >> this park, i must say, for those of mayor london breed first made jfk drive car free during the pandemic so people could have a place to come and be socially distanced, and it became permanently car free thanks to measures that passed at the polls last november. >> this rollerblader is ecstatic

about that, and opportunities in the city to have everyone come together in a community environment is something to really nurture as a city. >> so i'm all for keeping this the way it is. >> since the west portal fatal accident a few weeks ago, there's been a big push to recommit to vision zero. that's the policy to end fatal traffic crashes. >> we're not trying to get rid of cars. we want to make sure we balance that with the right infrastructure for uh, and that leads to safety and efficiency. >> just this week, sfpd released this 32 page plan to help slow drivers down as part of a six month pilot project, police will step up enforcement in ten of the most dangerous intersections in the city of san francisco. sfpd says enforcement will come in waves. this new crackdown on speeders comes at a time where data shows that the number of traffic tickets given by sfpd has dramatically dropped due to staffing or regulations. jody medeiros is with walk sf. >> we're encouraging the police

to do this, to make sure that people know that our laws are going to be enforced, they are going to be focusing on speeding, which is the number one cause of our crashes and fatalities. >> and walk sf says there are a number of approaches to keeping our streets safe for pedestrians and cyclists. as you heard, keeping jfk drive car free. you also heard that they're planning on adding enforcement at a number of dangerous intersections and also, the city of san francisco plans on adding speed cameras. we're live in san francisco, suzanne phan abc seven news. we appreciate the report, suzanne. >> thank you. another san francisco deputy sheriff has been attacked by an inmate at a county jail. that's according to the deputy sheriff's association. union officials say the deputy was struck in the head at county jail. number three in san bruno. the association blames understaffing at the facility. the group adds that in the last month, there have been 11 attacks on jail deputies. we've reached out to the sheriff's office for more information about this latest incident. the office blames the

violence on the large number of violent offenders being kept in custody longer. new developments in the israel-hamas war. president joe biden spoke to israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu today, the two discussing the prospects of a possible cease fire and hostage deal. abc news reporter tom soufi burridge is in jerusalem with details on the call and word of a new hostage video. >> israel continues its military operation in gaza, even as international pressure grows for both sides to reach a deal for a cease fire. secretary of state antony blinken traveling to saudi arabia this week as negotiations between hamas and israel move into a critical phase, the biden administration says blinken will be pushing for a six week cease fire. >> and what we're hoping is that after six weeks of a temporary cease fire, we can maybe get something more enduring in place . >> protesters in israel have been demanding the hostages be brought home, the calls growing louder following hamas videos showing two hostages seen for the first time in captivity, 47

year old israeli citizen omri miran and israeli american keith segal, all partially sunny, 64 year old segal, seen with his head shaven and speaking under duress. >> yes, this is not normal, yafim >> segal's wife, aviva, was held with him in gaza for 51 days. she was released in november during a previous cease fire and hostage deal. after seeing the new hamas video, she and her daughters released this message keith, i love you. we will fight until you return. meanwhile, the israeli military has released a video of onshore preparations along the gaza coast as the us military works to install an offshore temporary pier to bring in large shipments of humanitarian aid to gaza. tom soufi abc news, jerusalem. >> we are following the story of pro-palestinian protests on college campuses. tomorrow will

mark a week since students started this encampment outside uc berkeley's sproul plaza. it's remained peaceful since students first pitched those tents. demonstrators demand the university acknowledge there is a genocide happening in gaza. divest from companies that do business in israel and close its student program. there across the bay at stanford university, day four of demonstrations on campus. there, protesters are demanding stanford separate itself from any companies or organizations advancing military efforts in the israel-hamas war. stanford said that divestment decisions are made by stanford's board of trustees and the university's endowment has no direct holdings in israeli companies. meantime, the ongoing occupation at cal poly humboldt in arcata has led to a campus shutdown. yesterday the school sent an email to students saying the university is closing the campus after protesters used furniture. even chains on monday to block entrances to two campus

buildings. officers arrested at least three students. classes will now be held remotely. protests over the israel-hamas war have popped up on college campuses nationwide following last week's arrest of more than 100 demonstrators at new york's columbia university city. we do have continuing coverage of the campus protests across the country and here in the bay area at our website, abc7 news.com. happening now, two road closures are impacting drivers, while caltrans makes repairs. both roads are set to reopen tomorrow at 4 a.m. now, in one of the closures, nine miles of 680 southbound is shut down through pleasanton between the 580 connector and koopman road. you can see there the section that is closed on the right hand side of your screen. caltrans says crews have been working around the clock since friday night, and today they poured concrete and did some asphalt paving. caltrans says the work is on schedule and the freeway is set to reopen on time. more sections

of southbound 680 near dublin and san ramon are set to close next month for repaving work. now, that second closure is in the north bay, caltrans is doing pavement repairs on highway 37 from vallejo to sears point. yesterday afternoon, caltrans reported traffic delays of about an hour and a half. this is the second weekend in a row the road is shut down again. both roads are expected to be back open by 4 a.m. monday. well, the storm is not over yet. >> we heard everything being thrown around above us and it was. it was so scary. it was so scary. >> a tornado outbreak in oklahoma overnight is blamed for a number of deaths, and now other states are in the storm's path and are you ready for a disaster? we'll check out an event today in the east bay geared towards keeping people safe. >> i'm spencer christian, looking at gusty conditions here in the bay area, yet the temperature range is mild. how

long will this last? i'll have the accuweather forecast, and we do want to take a moment right now to remember a dear friend and colleague here at abc7 news who died suddenly earlier this month. >> a celebration of life was held in danville this afternoon to honor photojournalist henry gerkins. members of the abc7 news family joined his loved ones to pay tribute to a loving husband dedicated father and a devoted journalist who helped bring you the news every day. henry leaves behind his wife, jenny, his two sons, bob and geoffrey. he was 59 years old and, speaking as a reporter, he was the type of person that you would be assigned to pair up with for the day, and you knew it was going to be a good day. always the consummate professional, always your biggest cheerleader. he pushed you to do better. henry loved this business so fiercely. he loved his family fiercely and was one of the hardest workers in this business. we will miss him so much

storm to have the property damage that was so extensive. >> but the loss of life that's a tremendous attribute of the city of omaha. >> the storm is expected to finally lose intensity by tomorrow morning, giving residents there an opportunity to start the recovery process. in the east bay, being prepared for disasters was the message. at a community outreach event in oakland, city officials joined local volunteers to distribute earthquake disaster kit items at cesar chavez school in the fruitvale district. some of those items included personal hygiene kits, along with first aid supplies and other necessities for when disaster strikes. >> supply chains will be disrupted. water might be shut off, it might be difficult to get food, so people might be experiencing food insecurity. these are just a couple of items that people can have to get them through those first, you know, 72 hours, along with the relief items, officials explained how oaklanders can be self-sufficient after a disaster by doing things like building a

trip to sacramento to protest the move. you heard them say sell the team during the sacramento river cats game against the las vegas aviators. fans showed up wearing a's gear along with holding those signs that say the word sell. sutter health park in sacramento is expected to be the a's temporary home starting next season. then, the a's are scheduled to move to las vegas, where they will begin playing home games at a new stadium in 2028. all right, no matter what you want to do, if you want to have a demonstration, if you want to go to sacramento, i mean, great weather all around. >> it really is done. it's a bit breezy out there, gusty, as a matter of fact, but it's certainly nice and pleasant. here's the satellite radar composite image. you can see that rather brisk, robust onshore flow producing gusts right now over 30mph at sfo, san mateo and novato. so that's going to be with us for a while. but the skies are nice and clear, as you can see in this view from sutro tower 60 here in san francisco right now, 64 in oakland and hayward, san jose,

7166, redwood city 55 at half moon bay. another clear view from mount tam looking down onto the bay. 76 at santa rosa right now. petaluma only 6370 at napa and livermore. mid 70s at fairfield and concord. and check out this view of blue sky over the golden gate from emeryville. these are the forecast headlines . windy near the coast overnight and again tomorrow. sunny windy and mild. and later in the week we'll see a warming trend through friday as the winds ease up a bit. so right now we're looking at overnight conditions, mainly clear skies, a few wispy clouds may move through the bay area. overnight lows will be generally in the upper 40s, so a nice moderate range of overnight lows. highs tomorrow under sunny, windy conditions 58 at half moon bay 65 san francisco oakland will top out at 70 degrees tomorrow. over in the inland east bay. we'll see mid 70s all around up north 73 at santa rosa and napa. down south 72 will be the high at san jose. now, looking at the future cast, you can see that for the week ahead, there will be a very active storm track going to our north, so there'll be lots of wet weather moving through the
