a pedal powered vw bug, hundreds of people came out to celebrate another year. that jfk drive has been car free. >> we're really excited to have a car free space in san francisco. this was a dangerous street. now all it does is spark joy. >> parents like tammy two are grateful for the safe space. >> it's really awesome because you get a ride, feel safe with your little ones. >> this park, i must say, for those of mayor london breed first made jfk drive car free during the pandemic so people could have a place to come and be socially distanced. >> it became permanently car free thanks to measures that passed at the polls last november. this rollerblader is ecstatic about that, and opportunities in the city to have everyone come together in a community environment is something to really nurture as a city. >> so i'm all for keeping this the way it is. >> since the west portal fatal accident a few weeks ago, there's been a big push to recommit to vision zero. that's the policy to end fatal traffic crashes. >> we're not trying to get rid of cars. we want to make sure we

balance that with the right infrastructure. and that leads to safety and efficiency. >> just this week, sfpd released this 32 page plan to help slow drivers down as part of a six month pilot project, police will step up enforcement in ten of the most dangerous intersections in the city of san francisco. sfpd says enforcement will come in waves. this new crackdown on speeders comes at a time where data shows that the number of traffic tickets given by sfpd has dramatically dropped due to staffing or regulations. jody medeiros is with walk sf. >> we're encouraging the police to do this, to make sure that people know that our laws are going to be enforced, they are going to be focusing on speeding, which is the number one cause of our crashes and fatalities. >> besides keeping jfk drive car free. besides adding enforcement to a number of dangerous intersections, the city of san francisco is also adding speed cameras in san francisco, suzanne phan abc seven news

deputies in san francisco's jails are sounding the alarm after they say another deputy was attacked on the job. the deputy sheriff's association says someone hit a deputy in the head at county jail. number three in san bruno. the union says there have been 11 attacks on jail deputies in the last month. they blame low staffing at the facility, a series of assaults put two jails on lockdown two weeks ago, and the sheriff's office blames the violence on the large number of violent offenders staying in custody longer. new developments tonight in the pro-palestinian protests at college campuses across the country. police at more than a dozen college campuses have arrested about 600 people over the last week prix palestine tense moments at ucla today as counter-protesters clashed with pro-palestinian demonstrators. the university says a group broke through a barrier meant to keep the protests apart. no word on any arrests. they're up at cal poly

humboldt, the campus is closed and police are threatening people with arrest if they enter without permission. students are still camped out in two buildings. they're demanding the university divest from companies connected to israel, and they also want the university to call for a ceasefire in gaza. the campus is closed and classes are remote through the end of the semester. here in the bay area, the two big encampments at stanford and uc berkeley are still going on tonight, the stanford group is past the university's deadline to clear out, but we haven't heard of any arrests. there is progress tonight toward a cease fire in the israel-hamas war. hamas says it will send a delegation to cairo for hostage and ceasefire negotiations. those negotiations are expected to get underway shortly. and earlier today, president biden and israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu spoke on the phone about those efforts to secure the release of hostages. the leaders also spoke about ramping up humanitarian aid to gaza and

the possibility of a temporary cease fire. >> if we're able to get this hostage deal in place and we are still working at that, hamas has not fully rejected it. they are considering this proposal on the table. if we can get that in place, then that gives you six weeks of peace. it gives you no fighting for six weeks, and that includes no fighting in rafah, israeli forces continue to prepare for an apparent invasion of the southern gaza town of rafah. >> president biden today reaffirmed his position that america would not support an incursion unless israel had a credible humanitarian plan. new developments now in the fallout from sexual assault allegations against a rising political star in san francisco, our partners at the san francisco standard report, speaker emerita nancy pelosi, is now weighing in on the investigation. san francisco's democratic party is launching a committee to look into allegations of sexual assault by john jacobo and at least one other political leader. jacobo was the director

of a powerful housing nonprofit, but resigned after the standard published the allegations against him. at least three women say they filed police reports over alleged abuse and harassment. the standard reports pelosi sent a letter yesterday to the sf democratic party expressing her support for the committee. sfpd says it is still investigating the women's claims. we are learning more tonight about the impact of an early pandemic push to help people facing eviction. a new city analysis says san francisco's rent relief program saved about 20,000 people from eviction. san francisco launched the emergency rental assistance program back in 2021, and it used money from increased property taxes on homes worth $10 million or more to help low income renters. a new report by the city's budget analyst says more than 10,000 households got money through that program. most of the funds went to back rent so people wouldn't be evicted. happening now the final hours of work on two major highways shut

down all weekend for repairs. caltrans says highway 37in the north bay and 680 in the east bay are both on track to reopen before the morning commute. the next time you drive southbound on 680 through pleasanton, it will be smooth on on new pavement. caltrans crews poured new concrete this weekend. the highway should reopen at 4 a.m. now. the repaving work is wrapping up on westbound highway 37 in the north bay. lanes are closed from vallejo to sears point, but they are also set to reopen at 4 a.m. next weekend. caltrans will start work on the eastbound side of the highway. california's oldest state park is growing in more ways than one. big changes are coming for big basin as the park's ancient redwoods recover from a wildfire, and the a's haven't even moved to sacramento yet. and the city's already facing protests. these fans won't let their team leave without a

with debris and roofs just sheared off for that big of a storm to have the property damage that was so extensive. >> but the loss of life, that's a tremendous attribute of the city of omaha. >> the storm system is expected to finally lose intensity by tomorrow morning, giving people an opportunity to start the recovery process happening tomorrow. residents in the los altos hills may notice tree trimmers and landscapers hard at work to fireproof a critical evacuation route. crews will fan out across the elena road to fremont road evacuation route in los altos to clear shrubs and other fire prone trees. the route is a vital escape path in case of a major wildfire in the neighborhood. nearly five and a half miles of road will be cleaned up as part of the project. well, new location, same message as baseball fans have taken their frustration about the team's departure from oakland on the road. well, that

california's oldest state park is growing. a nonprofit says it just bought new land to expand big basin redwoods state park. nearly 200 acres could eventually be added to the park in the santa cruz mountains. the sempervirens fund says the new land could be home to a new entrance on the eastern side of big basin. almost all of the park burned in 2020. ccu lightning complex fire. that fire destroyed all of big basin's historic buildings and dramatically changed the landscape. many of the ancient redwoods are still standing, though, and new growths are filling in. park access is still limited as the recovery work continues. all right. the weather certainly is recovering also from a bounce back kind of whiplash situation. spencer. >> you're right about that, diane. the winds are so gusty out there right now. and despite the gusty wind is it's calm in terms of the temperature range. so here's what's happening in the satellite radar composite image center of high pressure to our southwest with its clockwise circulation center of low pressure to our northwest with

its counterclockwise circulation . the combined flow is giving us robust onshore winds with gusts up to 40mph. right now at sfo, and powerful gusts all across the bay area. the 24 hour temperature change shows at the same time, we've got these strong winds b blowing out ther. it's a little bit warmer by a few degrees right now than at this time last night. so let's take a live view from sutro tower looking out over san francisco where it's 57 degrees right now, 60 in oakland, but we have low to mid 60s in hayward and san jose, 67, redwood city 54 at half moon bay and looking down onto the bay from mount tam, 69 degrees in santa rosa. right now, petaluma a cool 57. low 60s at napa and fairfield and napa and livermore rather fairfield and concord in the upper 60s. and let's check out our forecast headlines. we're going to have windy conditions near the coast overnight and probably out over the bay as well. tomorrow sunny, windy, but still mild with temperatures rising up to normal spring like levels. and then the week ahead will bring us a warming trend

through friday will make it feel almost like summer, so for tonight, look at what the wind does. it clears out any clouds that dare come into the area. so we'll have clear skies overnight going into a sunny day tomorrow morning. overnight lows will be generally in the upper 40s. a few locations will get chillier up at lakeport, a low of 37 degrees. then tomorrow under sunny skies, look for highs of 58 at half moon bay, 65, san francisco up to about 70 and many other locations near the bay. inland areas will warm to the mid 70s tomorrow, so that's pretty mild as we look ahead for the remainder of the week. here's the future track showing that there will be an active storm flow over the pacific northwest as an active storm track, i should say, bringing rain to many areas there throughout the week, but nothing is going to hit the bay area until perhaps possibly next saturday, when some clouds start to venture into the area. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. so mild weather the next two days. wednesday we start to really warm up. thursday and friday inland. highs in the mid 80s right around the bay shoreline, mid to
