roads and seems like there has not been any big issues. >> no big issues, but a smaller crash just around auto mall parkway. one detail says there were three vehicles, maybe four that were, quote, racing through the area. do watch that. no major injuries, and not a major slowdown but we are watching for the activity. i am tracking activity in the area towards hayward, southbound 880, and that's slowing. the earlier slowdown there as well as in pleasanton looks like it eased up a bit. we have the build up out of the altamont pass and the big rig on the shoulder. and another issue, maybe concrete in the roadway approaching eden county, and it's off the dublin grade. that's another report coming in with no major slowing. the rest of the bay shows an easy drive along the peninsula. the metering lights on since

now, we had russia pounding ukraine overnight with dozens of missiles. this is seemingly in response in the mission to send dozens of tanks to ukraine. president biden announcing the u.s. will send 31 advanced abram tanks to ukraine to help it defend itself and regain territory taken by russia. >> putin expected europe and the united states to weaken our dissolve, and he expected our support for ukraine to crumble with him. he was wrong. >> the u.s. sending a clear message to russia and the world, the u.s. and nato allies remain unified in support for ukraine. >> this is a big day in kyiv and a bad day in moscow. >> the decision made in lockstep with germany as berlin announces it will send it's tanks. members of congress appearing

a police charge is accused of crashing into a car in san francisco and then driving away. it appears to show the department suv crash into a white parked mercedes in san francisco. in a 16-page report by an independent law firm, says the suv's driver stopped for a few seconds before driving away. inside the car was a sergeant and opd officer he was dating. the report says a year later that same police sergeant allegedly fired his weapon inside a police station service elevator. it suggests the opd failed to hold him accountable, and then the police chief was placed on leave. caltrans is asking for new funding to address the homeless encampment on its properties. they are seeking $25 million, and that will cover several

years of costs tied to camps and providing housing solutions. critics call the proposal counter productive saying that money should be spent, instead, for services and more housing. we are awaiting the sun's arrival as we look at glowing san josé there. all the lights are glistening. >> it's going to be warmer this afternoon. some parts of the bay area feeling warmer in the start to this morning. they were seeing temperatures in the mid-50s, and where the winds are calmer, those temperatures are dropping. morgan hill, 37 and compare that to the 56 we have in napa. it's 30 degrees right now in santa rosa compared to when you stepped out the door yesterday at this time. big changes because the winds

are kicking up in some of the spots. it will be a nice day once again to enjoy more time outside. if you want to, go for a hike in the south bay as it will start out in the low 40s. i would wait until noon where temperatures will be in the mid-50s. mike, you may need to get the car gassed up before heading off to work. where can we find lower prices? >> kari, we will start in mill valley, 3.89. it's the best at hq fuel. a familiar name. in san josé, 3.86, one of your best at a & a. we sometimes see lower prices in san josé than have been trending. and then 3.39 over in dublin. watch for those prices around

the dublin area. tracking the bay, the volume of traffic builds as well. slowing out of the altamont pass. a few disabled vehicles scattered, but after you pass that point it's clear. vasco at the top of your screen, and over half an hour from marsh creek and 580 itself. highway 4, that gradual build out of antioch and towards concord. the backup at the bay bridge building, but it's still a slow drive for most of the lanes coming past the parking lot. back over to you. >> thanks, mike. 6:08 right now. the future of air taxes about to take flight.

peninsula. tracking an issue with highway 24. we will see what is going on, coming up. all kinds of good numbers today. tesla reported record profits on the last quarter. bay area chevron buying back stock and boosting dividends. the oil profits are coming back to investors. 45 minutes ago we got the fourth quarter gdp numbers. better than expected, 2.9 growth. it shows inflation fading. it's thursday, so we just got first-time jobless claims as well. those are good. data does look backwards. jobless claims are almost real time. these are from last week. again, it's good news. twitter users complaining twitter is blocking people from linking to a bbc documentary

weeks as all of the rain was falling, and we were hoping it would help out. we are seeing a lot of that severe drought that was happening across much of the central valley. look at the improvements we had. last week where a lot of the orange was decreased for the california area as well as all across the west, it really did help us out, those atmospheric rivers. let me take you to what i just got this morning as we saw even less of the orange across the central valley. notice the yellow areas, which is just abnormally dry, that expanded for parts of the central coast into the santa cruz area. for the bay area, there was not much of a change. we are still in a moderate drought, but we did see a 10% increase in severe drought across the state with much of that happening in the central valley, which we know is where a lot of our agriculture land is, so that was great news to see that. now we are also looking ahead,

and we are also not expecting much rain in the forecast, but there will be a couple systems dropping in that will bring us much colder temperatures and scattered showers starting on sunday and continuing into monday before it clears up once again. back behind that, we're not seeing much in the way of any strong systems, no atmospheric rivers. rain will fall apart before it gets here, but we are only looking at 0.1 of an inch of rain or less with the next one coming in. we will also be looking ahead to see how things are stacking up. as far as where things stand with the water year. we are still at a surplus, as you look at how much rain we measured and how much we are above what is normal, a lot of spots still double over the normal amount. and then the sierra melt from the snowpack will help us out.

we are more than double the normal amount of the sierra snowpack. there will only be another few inches of snow going into next week as we see the systems moving in, but it will be cold and that's what we are talking about a lot next week, freezing temperatures in our mornings and reaching the low 50s for the afternoons. we are enjoying upper 60s today. yeah, take it in. this is one of the last days we will see weather that warm in quite a while. next week, oh, it's going to be very cold, freezing once again. mike, you are seeing slowing in the east bay? >> yeah, not frozen but still slow. the volume continues to keep stacking up at the bay bridge toll plaza. the bulk of the commute is just getting started in the east bay. richmond down in towards berkeley, a slow drive there. typical pattern. we did have a lot of extra slowing here. there was a report of a disabled

vehicle coming out of lafayette and into arenda, but then we saw it appear and then they must have cleared that vehicle. no problems out of walnut creek interchange. a good start for 680 and 24. and then the traffic still held up a little bit by distractions, and one lane is blocked by a big rig over there out of the altamont pass. and we are starting to see more slowing with the lane shift towards sunol. the sensors just changed from red to yellow here. we -- there we go. flashing lights. westbound commute direction, something going on in the service lane. i hope that means the lanes are cleared with the distraction. >> love that, mike. i was looking, and you are like, it's right there.

thank you for starting your day with us. i am laura garcia. >> i am marcus washington. a lot to get to this morning, but we want to start off on a lighter note for you. this morning the competition is kicking into high gear tonight at the shark tank. the nation's top skaters are competing. we will have a closer look in about 15 minutes with kris sanchez. a chilly start to our morning, but things are warming up? >> yes, we may have something like that on the roadways out there next week once the temperatures drop. i know, it will be very cold. we are taking in what we have now as we wake up and head out with our clear sunrise. a live look outside in san josé. mid-40s right now and heading for the mid-60s. make sure you are taking it in because this is going to be one of the last days we will see temperatures reaching the upper 60s and low 70s in the north bay. livermore reaching 62 as well.

62 in san francisco. we will talk about that cooldown and when we get rain in our forecast coming up in a few minutes. >> thanks, kari. this morning the half moon bay community continues to deal with what many thought was the unthinkable. across the entire bay area people are gathering to pay tribute to the lives lost after a mass shooting earlier this week. we now know the names of the victims. >> here they are for you on your screen. seven families torn apart leaving behind children, wives, brothers and sisters. today in the bay's bob redell joining us live from the growing memorial in half moon bay. we have spoke to some relatives of those victims. >> reporter: correct, good morning, marcus and laura. this is a park here in the downtown area of half moon bay. you get a sense of the kind of support these victims are getting from the community where people that live here in half moon bay left candles, flowers and messages of support for the

victims. there's much more here today than there was yesterday. in this video, grandparents, a wife and three children are pleading for more support from the community. their father is josé perez, and he was one of the ones that was killed on monday. their uncle is pedro perez, and he is the sole survivor of the shooting. his oldest daughter says they have no money and they are in mexico and she's asking the community to support her uncle during his recovery. and marciano martinez jimenez was also killed, and he was described as a father-figure to carlos martinez maya. >> i can remember i chose him every time for every single occasion. >> his family created a gofundme

page. they are hoping to have a funeral service here and then take his body back to mexico. the suspect, 66-year-old chunli zhao held a paper in front of his face in court. he did not enter a plea to any of the seven counts of the first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder. he could face life without the possibility of parole or the death penalty. that would be up to the d.a. which route to take. he was assigned two attorneys, and sources close to the investigation tell our investigative unit, chunli zhao claimed responsibility for the shootings during his arrest. the d.a. says he expect this case to go to trial. >> such a sad story. those lives lost there. thanks for the latest. >> if you would like to find a

way to help the victims and families, we have a special page on our website, nbcbayarea.com/supporthmb for more. and then two people were shot last night in poke gulch. so far there's no word on what led up to the shooting. happening today, footage of the attack of paul pelosi is expected to be released to the public. this is after a judge denied the request from prosecutors to keep it secret. this is a live look where the attack took place. video was recorded on an officer's body worn camera. a coalition of news organizations including nbc bay area filed a request for the footage. the d.a.'s office arguing releasing that footage would allow people to manipulate it

and spread false information. david depape is accused of attacking paul pelosi with a hammer inside of the san francisco home back in october. depape has pleaded not guilty to all charges. west contra costa schools facing pressure on two fronts this morning from students and teachers. last night teachers rallied ahead of the school board meeting. they are currently working without a contract and argued salaries are not keeping up with rising living costs. the district is also grappling with another issue. some students are raising concerns about discrimination in the classroom. student leaders attended last night's meeting and spoke out. >> they have been suppressing us

and have not done anything about it. >> this has been a tumultuous week for the district, and it started with video emerging with what is now a since-fired substitute teacher throwing a student to the ground. the student called the teacher the "n" word and the student may face suspension. some students oppose the teacher's termination. they did not respond to our request for a follow-up comment. believe it or not, today marks three years since the dawn of the covid pandemic. california reported its first covid case january 26th, 2020. that was right after the united states's first confirmed case in washington state. since then, 11 million confirmed cases reported. later today, the fda is asking

durable goods are up. first-time jobless claims down, much lower than expected, perhaps indicating those who lost jobs to layoffs are getting job offers quickly. biden knows he is vulnerable on peoples' perception of the economy and the white house indicates he will try and set the record straight with the speech today. no doubt he will also speak about the need to raise the debt ceiling. failure to do that could put the economy in recession. house leader kevin mccarthy said he wants to negotiate over the debt ceiling. the white house says it won't negotiate. at this point it's not clear what mccarthy would want. senate leader, chuck schumer, saying, quote, until mccarthy has a plan, a plan that can pass the house with republican support, going to the white house to talk about the debt ceiling is like going with no cards in his hand. the house oversight committee and u.s. treasury going back and

forth over hunter biden's banking reports. the same committee asked hunter biden's art dealer to come and answer questions before lawmakers. biden and amateur painters sold paintings priced at hundreds of thousands of dollars to buyers. the system raised as many questions as it has prevented. facebook said it let donald trump back on the system again. we will not get to that. the company says trump is a candidate for the next presidential election, americans should hear from him.

we are on facebook, too. you can find me on facebook @scottmcgrewtv. new this morning, raising money for a new tool in a fight against cancer. the american cancer society says nearly 2 million people will be diagnosed this year. more than 600,000 will die. lung and colorectal cancers cause the most deaths. the science in medicine and molecular medicine exploring a way to fight cancer. the advancements researchers are making are aimed at meeting president biden's goal at reducing cancer deaths in 25 years. >> the imaging, which is a non-profit academic organization, it has introduced the initiative.

here. the skaters are about to hit the ice in about 15 minutes for practice and then competition starts at 8:30 this morning. we got to see some of the junior women's competitors. they are precious and skating their hearts out. you see the joy in their performances. we talked with two young skaters in a national competition for the first time, including one that only found out she made the lineup after she wrapped up her season. >> i was an alternate for this composition, so i found out a week ago i was competing here and i did not learn my programs because i was done, but i decided to take the opportunity and train for a hard five days. >> i was really, like, happy and then i think i might have been a little too excited. but for the most part, i am really happy with it.

>> reporter: she's one of the few skaters to compete in two disciplines as the junior women's solo and also in junior pairs. she and her partner, by the way, took fourth place on wednesday. many of the big names retired, and so these are some of the skaters we hope will make the olympics. >> this is a really important year because it's repopulating our u.s. team for the world championships and olympics. most likely the people on the top of the podium here, who never have been on the podium here will be the same people on the top of the podium in four years representing the united states for olympic gold. >> reporter: competition begins again at 8:30 this morning.

we got the update on the drought monitor this morning, and that shows major improvement. let's talk about it. i will take you back two weeks and this is what it looked like. we had a lot of orange across parts of the central valley, all the way up to northern california and then last week after all of the that rain fell, we got the update that they are reducing the size of that severe drought and also starting to include more abnormally dry conditions for parts of southern california as well as the nor cal coast. the update this morning, even more improvement. keep an eye on the orange area that disappeared for much of the central valley. it went from severe to moderate drought and that was a downgrade in the category. up for the central coast up through the santa cruz mountains, it's abnormally dry. we saw a huge improvement there. over all there was a 10% decrease in the severe drought

across california. here in the bay area, once again, we are still in a moderate drought. we have had dry weather. now we are starting to see a change in the weather pattern as the high pressure that kept it dry starts to move away. that will make way for a couple storm systems to come in. they are not atmospheric rivers. they are cold fronts that will make it very cold next week. a lot of times they are starved for moisture, and we will see that happen. as the storm systems come in the rain falls apart but it keeps the temperatures down quite a bit. we are not looking at a lot of rain here. in fact, as we run the models out to next week, it's showing in some spots 0.1 of an inch of rain or less. we are still in a big sur plus looking at how much rain we pleasured so far across the area, and how that is above normal for this time. we have had the sierra snowpack melt that will help fill some of
