good morning. we begin with the breaking news out of baltimore. the prayer vigil was held overnight for the victims of the francis scott key bridge collapse. community leaders gathered to honor the construction workers who were lost when the bridge crumbled into the water. alice barr joins us now from baltimore. good morning. what is the latest on the search for the missing men? >> reporter: good morning, frances. we are just down the road from where the bridge should be spank the patapsco river. instead, it is in the water. we've all seen these images that are so stunning, the moment that a massive cargo ship, th, the lh of the e fmpire state building, crash flood a support pillar. and the tragedy that we know out of that is there was a construction crew that was fixing potholes on the bridge. eight workers that we have been

told about, two of them were quickly pulled from the river, but six of them have not been found. and all day yesterday, there was an urgent search and rescue under way above the water, from the air, on the surface of the water, under the water using sonar technology. but late last night, essentially, they had to suspend that and said it has now shifted from a search and rescue effort to a recovery effort. the coast guard saying those six remaining missing construction workers are presumed to be dead. and they are planning to resume the search around 6:00 a.m. today when the conditions are a little bit, hopefully more conducive to being able to look in the dark water. but let's let you hear from some of the first responders. >> we're going away from the search and rescue portion to a recovery operation. the changing conditions out there have made it dangerous for the first responders, the divers in the water. >> we've got very difficult

water temperatures, structures in the water that can move with the tide and currents, making that dangerous for divers and people in the water to try to do recovery. >> reporter: authorities say the ship had lost power and p propulsion. you're able to see in some of the videos, the lights are flashing, and there was black smoke coming from one of the stacks. we know theres with w theremayd call made from the ship, and that happened in enough time for officials to should down the bridge. and officials are saying that was life saving work. the shipping company, synergy marine group says the crew did not suffer injuries on the cargo ship. and they are cooperating with the investigation. president biden is promising to rebuild the bridge and saying the federal government will pay for all of it. >> alice, thank you. meantime, so many questions, and authorities are looking into why that cargo ship apparently lost

power. here's tom costello with what we know about what happened so far. >> reporter: it was pitch-black as the "dali" left port, tr traveling 8 knots. it took four minutes from the first moments of trouble until the crash into the bridge. the lights suddenly went out on the deck, they came back on a minute later as dark smoke started billowing from the stack. the dali appeared to turn, but at the same time, the lights went out again. the ship collided with the bridge. the super structure quickly crumbling into the river below. >> we searched as best we could. >> reporter: among the questions, did the bridge have sufficient barriers to protect its support structures? >> once the bridge is impacted, directly, into one of its piers, that's going to be the end. >> reporter: under u.s. law,

ship must use a local pilot to help navigate the waters. >> they have all the knowledge of the waterways. they memorize the charts. they can literally draw the chart from scratch on a piece of paper. >> reporter: a local pilot was on the ship. >> there's nothing worse on the bridge of a ship when everything goes quiet. >> reporter: ships are backed up in the harbor. now ntsb investigators were on the scene. they will recover the datae dat recorders. an online database shows the ship has had 27 inspections with two deficiency problems. last year a problem with propulsion. because the ship is flagged from singapore, they are also responding. built in 1977, the francis scott

key bridge was krconstructed to carry heavy traffic. rebuilding the bridge could take years. the fire department says so far, no indication of pollution in the water. this is going to impact the supply chain, products and cars from abroad not able to get in to the critical port. and carnival crew cuise line announcing they will move their operations from here to norfolk, virginia for the foreseeable future. breaking news this morning. five people, including a child died in a car crash in fayette county, pennsylvania. the car crossed into oncoming traffic. all of the victims were in the same car. a second car was struck in the accident. both people in the vehicle and a semi-truck driver sustained multiple injuries. the accident is under investigation. we are learning more about those raids on sean "diddy"

combs' properties. three sources familiar with the matter say police found several firearms during searches of homes in los angeles and miami. another source tells nbc news that the rap mogul also known as diddy, is the subject of a federal investigation and several people have been interviewed in relation to allegations of sex trafficking, drugs and guns. a lawyer condemned the actions as a gross overuse of military force and maintained his client's innocence. they pointed out that neither co combs nor anyone in his family has been arrested. justices are skeptical of claims brought by a group challenging access to mifepristone. susan mcguinness has the latest. >> what do we want? >> freedom! >> reporter: outside the supreme court demonstrators on both side

of the abortion issue. inside, justices heard arguments in a case that could significantly restrict access to mifepristone, a commonly-used abortion drug prescribed for decades. >> millions of americans have used mifepristone to safely end their pregnancies. >> reporter: the high court revealing an appeals court decision restricting mifepristone access, rolling back the fda's making the pill easier to get, including through telemedicine and by mail. >> we are asking the supreme court to hold the fda accountable for violating the law to the detriment of women's health. >> reporter: they claim the fda did not adequately evaluate the safety risks and wants the high court to limit access even in states where abortion remains legal. >> risks are extremely minimal and it's extremely safe. >> reporter: they say it's been safe since its approval in 2000.

a >> it would upend not just mifepristone but every drug approval. >> reporter: justices appeared skeptical of the challenge the anti-abortion doctors made. >> they're saying because we object to having to participate in this procedure, we're seeking an order preventing anyone from having access to these drugs at all. >> reporter: the supreme court is allowing full access to the drug while legal proceedings play out. former president donald trump now under a new partial gag order in his criminal hush money case. the presiding judge ordered trump not to talk about witnesses or court staff in the upcoming case. the judge said the order was necessary, because past trump statements included threatening and inflammatory language that go, quote, far beyond defending himself against attacks. a trump campaign spokesman says the order violates the constitutional right of the presumptive gop nominee to engage in core political speech. storms brewing on both
