thousands of tons of debris. >> the city of baltimore is honoring the victims of the collapse, including this moment of silence before the orioles opening day game. >> tom, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. the sun is coming up here, and their job remains the following. the ntsb continues to have its work up on the bridge, up on the ship itself, evaluating that ship, talking to the crew. at the same time, the coast guard needs to stabilize that ship before they ever begin the salvage operations. they also need to take off hazardous materials off of that ship. they have a lot going on. we went out on the water with the u.s. army core of engineers to see the daunting task up ahead for them. inside the now blocked channel at the port of baltimore, the remnants of the key bridge, poking precariously out of the river where the army corps of

engineers is preparing for the daunting operation to clear it out. >> these edges, sharp edges on the steel, those are razor sharp and they go all the way to the bottom. >> reporter: it means getting everything out down to the sand because the massive cargo ship that pass through only have inches to share. do you see that piece of steel coming through? that alone weighs three to four thousand tons. they have to cut that to pieces to remove it. that's just for one stretch of the bridge. >> there is only one danger beneath the murky surface of the water. divers need to cut apart the bridge piece by piece.t hours before the cargo shi it is why dive teams have had to stop searching for four missing construction workers scene working on the bridge hours before the cargo ship collided with it. >> that water is so dark, and the debris is so dense that in

most instances our divers cannot see any more than a foot or two in front of them. so much of the operation is simply feel. >> reporter: onboard, the damaged dolly. new video from the ntsb show how entangled portions have become with the ship. become on thursday to interview crew members, including two local pilots who remain onboard with 21 others. they're also examining equipment and the damaged containers. some of which are leaking hazardous materials inside the boat and into the river. >> this work is very forgiving and the planning has to be done in extreme detail. >> reporter: potentially very dangerous. >> incredibly dangerous. >> reporter: yeah. here's what's also fascinating. the man who survived this, the construction worker who survived, he was in his truck. it went into the water. he climbed out of that truck,

managed to make it to shore. he doesn't even swim. he's in shock trauma right now, baltimore's trauma center. he has a crushed injury, but he is going to make it. an amazing story of survival with him. >> just incredible, tom, to hear that. let's go back to the salvage operation. how long is this, just the salvage operation, expected to last? >> reporter: yeah. and the salvage operation hasn't started yet. as you made the point, because the ntsb still has a lot of work to do, but the army corps is surveying this to get a lay of the land. they have the crane that will pick up a thousand tons. but remember that piece i showey and you out there. that's 4,000 tons. they have another one that has a 4,000-ton lift capacity. so this will be a major effort and the view of the army corps of engineers, one of the biggest

challenges they have ever faced. they're up to the job, but it will take a lot of work. >> tom, it is an incredible feat to think about. thank you very much for your report. all right. let's move now to the race to the white house. president biden was here in new york overnight sharing the stage with two of his predecessors in a major fundraiser held at radio city music hall. donald trump made his own trip to new york. nbc's senior white house correspondent gabe gutierrez is here. gabe gutierrez is here. >> good morning. with most polls showing a dead heat between president biden and former president trump, the biden campaign is trying to fill momentum after the former state of the union address. the president was in the new york area setting up yet another split screen moment. overnight, a trio of presidents inside radio city music hall. presidents biden, obama and clinton presented a united front as the race for the white house

as another former president, donald trump, kicks it into high gear. featuring stephen colbert. >> can voters trust a presidential candidate who has not won a single trump international golf club trophy. >> i told him before, before he got sworn in, he said i'll give you three strokes if you carry your own bag. >> we got three presidents in the building tonight. >> the event included performances by lizzo and ben plaque. the biden campaign which did not allow video inside the event said it raised more than $25 million. mindy kaling joked about the high price to get in. >> it is such an honor to be in president obama arrived with his one-time vice president on this room with so many rich people. >> reporter: earlier in the day, former president obama arrived with his one-time vice president on air force one.

nbc gained access to the live stream early where the three presidents sat down for a pre-taped campaign interview. >> we're just getting started. let's keep going. let's win this november. >> reporter: inside the fundraiser interrupted a few times by pro-palestinian protesters. while outside the iconic venue, demonstrators blasted president biden's handling of the israel-hamas war. did you vote for him in 2020? >> i did. and i will not vote for him this time. >> reporter: president trump attended the wake of a police officer killed at a traffic stop. >> we have to get back to law and order. we have to do a lot of things differently because this is not working. >> reporter: back on the fundraiser last night, one of the moments that stood out, former president obama scolding pro-palestinian protesters and

strongly defending president biden. he told one of the hecklers, you can't just talk and not listen. certainly one of the issues that the democratic party is having to issue as the campaign ramps up. the travel rush. the nation's airports and the roads are getting very crowded with travelers headed out for easter weekend, spring break and the upcoming eclipse. we will get to al's forecast in a moment. but erin mclaughlin joins us from here in new york. so how is it looking so far? >> reporter: well, savannah, it is ramping up to be another busy travel day with spring break travel as well as folks kicking off their easter holiday weekend. yesterday saw a record 50,000 flights take to the skies nationwide. that is expected to continue through the weekend. so far today, we have seen more than 400 flights delayed. we're also hearing of an incident that happened yesterday morning in minneapolis. two delta planes clipping their wings. both plains sent back to their wings.

no injuries reported. but the faa is investigating. the faa is also warning that next week may be even busier with 150,000 flights expected between wednesday and friday. people will also be traveling for that solar eclipse on april 8th. >> if people do not want to supply and they want to drive, how will the roads be? >> reporter: yeah. well, we're seeing some difficult conditions, hoda, on both coasts here in the northeast. new england, millions are under flood watch and then over in california, they're expecting that big storm to hit over the for folks looking to fill up their thanks, it is worth noting that gas prices have been inching upwards. the national average of a gallon of gas is $3.50. that is 10 cents more than it was last year.

>> thank you very much. 7:12. let's say good morning to mr. roker. >> good morning and good morning to you. bringing rain and snow to parts of new england. the heaviest is the east end of massachusetts. rain through maine and heavier snow, upwards of five inches into northern maine. we have a double barrel low-pressure system that's going to be making its way. so the airport problems may be exacerbated where we have 21 million people under flood watches all the way to san diego. we're looking at winter storm mornings through the mountains, all the way up through the sierra mountains and the foothills seeing 3 to 5 inches of rain. that could lead to landslides and flooding.

we're looking at heavier snow through the rockies. here is what we're worried about on monday as people are coming home from their easter breaks. 28 million people at risk for severe weather, damaging wind gusts, hail on in to little rock. guys? >> all right, al. thank you so much. we appreciate it. craig joins the table. craig, you have another story we're working on. >> yes. good morning. good morning to you as well. new developments in the wake of those stunning raids in homes belonging to sean “diddy” combs. his attorney claiming excessive shows of force and hostility. nbc's stephanie gosk has the latest on that for us. >> federal agents raided his homes on monday. the music and fashion mogul has not been charged with any crimes, but a source familiar with the matter tells nbc news the investigation began before this year. multiple witnessed have been interviewed in california and new york.

and one of combs' associates was arrested facing drug charges in florida. drawers upended, wires left dangling from walls and cushions pulled off of furniture throughout the house. this video obtained by tmz allegedly shows the inside of sean “diddy” combs' l.a. home. after federal agents raided the property this week. a source familiar with the investigation telling nbc news investigators are looking into allegations of statutory rape against combs. authorities found wire arms in both his l.a. home and his property in miami. his attorney called the searches a witch hunt, adding there was a gross overuse of military-level force. the music mogul has not been charged with a crime, but a law enforcement source familiar with the matter says combs association, 25-year-old brendan paul was arrested in miami on monday, the same day the properties were searched and charged with drug possession, including cocaine. paul's attorney telling nbc news all issues will be dealt with in

court. in a lawsuit music producer jones alleges paul works as mr. combs' mule and acquires and distributes drugs and guns. 54-year-old combs is a long-time well connected presence in the music and fashion industries. this week, video of some of his past appearances going viral, including a clip of him with then 15-year-old justin bieber. >> where we hanging out, where we doing, we can't really disclose. >> let's just go get some girls. >> a man after my heart. that's what i'm talking about. >> reporter: in a 2016 interview with howard stern, r&b star usher saw the style he saw living with combs in the '90s as a 15-year-old. >> you are a dad now. would you ever send your kid to puffy camp?

this work. we talk about how big that bridge is. just the section of that bridge itself weighs 4,000 tons. and that crane that savannah mentioned that's coming in or has arrived overnight, that could pick up a thousand tons at a time. what do you do? the only solution is to cut the bridge up in pieces and use these monster cranes that are coming in to lift these pieces up and out. i talked to the commanding general of the army corps of engineers about the challenge. what is the biggest challenge right now? >> yeah, tom, the biggest challenge right now is what's right behind me. that piece of steel you see draped across the front of the vessel, that weighs somewhere between three and four thousand tons. we have one of the largest cranes coming in tonight on the eastern sea board that picks up 1,000 tons at a time. >> reporter: yeah. so that interview done yesterday, of course. the crane has now arrived. ntsb investigators continue out on the ship itself. they're gathering more data, more information, interviewing

crew members. and then the coast guard needs to stabilize that ship and remove of any of those containers with toxins this them. there is a lot of work to do. also need to tell you that the federal government has approved the first $60 million in requested aid by maryland. but the total price tag for this, getting all of that out of the water and then replacing the bridge, we're probably talking more than $1 billion. and the time line for that probably five years or so. it is going to be an ongoing story for many years to come, savannah. >> a huge task before them, tom. thank you very much. the nation's airports and roads are getting very crowded this morning. travelers heading out for the easter weekend, spring break and the upcoming eclipse. almost 40,000 flights are expected to hit the skies today alone. it is down from yesterday's peak. the faa is reminding people to give themselves extra time at the airport no matter where you
