good morning. it is monday, january 23rd . with the lunar new year celebration we take you live to los angeles county where a mass shooting caused 10 people to lose their lives. and heartfelt moment between a toddler and the paramedics is saved his life following accidental exposure to fentanyl. this morning we celebrate 49ers win over the cowboys. the red and gold report plus the team's wrote to the afc championship game . on the roadways it is busy at the altamonte pass and we have a few brake lights there. the weather common to this week . sunny skies around the corner and we will dive into the forecast coming up in just a bit. showers are headed our way .

the search for suspected gunmen in a deadly mass shooting in california is over . police say he took his life in a dramatic standoff with officers. michelle joins us east of los angeles with the latest. good morning michelle. >> reporter: good morning. this is home to one of the largest aapi communities in the united states. many people gathered here especially over the weekend to celebrate the lunar new year. a celebration shattered by gunfire. this was the dramatic scene on sunday as s.w.a.t. officers closed in on a van with a suspect in saturday 's deadly dance studio shooting pointed the gun on himself according to the sheriff's office. the suspect is identified as a 72-year-old and was dead at the scene . >> the sheriff's office is working on determining the motive .

>> he opened fire on saturday killing five men and five women. >> he held the gun and started shooting. >> reporter: they linked him to the monterey park shooting at another attempt at a dance studio in nearby alhambra was distorted by dance attendance members . >> reporter: for now the community and monterey park is trying to move forward from this tragedy. the president ordered flags at half staff in honor of the victims until thursday . the corner's office is working to identify the 10 victims. according to the l.a. county sheriff , the victims appear to be in their 50s and older. justin.

>> before we let you go, do investigators have clues about the gunman 's motive at this point? >> that is the million-dollar question and this is still an active investigation . police have not released information regarding a motive but they are looking into his background and into how many guns were purchased and if they were purchased legally . governor newsom reacting to the tragedy saying it was a act of violence on a night that should be joyful celebrations . >> and saying we cannot become numb to horrific acts of violence and work to restore respect for each other in the community. the year of the rabbit stands for hope and we must be resolute in our hope for a more unified society . to find out how this shooting is

impacting lunar new year celebration plans . >> reporter: entertaining the crowd before the sunday warriors game to the halftime performance featuring traditional dancers. thousands bring in the lunar new year with family and friends. red envelopes for watching the team take on the nets and some with heavy hearts . >> my mom is from vietnam and we celebrate . it is unfortunate to hear what happened in monterey especially where you want to get together and celebrate as a community . >> reporter: they say they feel safe at the chase center because of tight security . >> we have screenings when you come in and checking and i am sure the people in monterey park did not think about that either and that is the unfortunate thing. >> in joying family and

friends at the lunar celebration . >> my buddy off-camera was carrying a duffel bag and i could see them looking. i think the fact that there are police out there makes me feel a lot safer . >> reporter: from mission bay to chinatown crowds of people took part in celebrating the year of the rabbit . people gathered on street corners to set off fireworks and others had dinner like jenny chan and her friend. >> the mass shooting happen so close to my family and where i grew up and it is scary to say the least . there is a voice in the back of my head that hopefully nothing happened , hopefully . thank god nothing has happens.

>> we will bring updates of the shooting right here on cbs news bay area , over the air as well as on our new site at kpix.com. now let's check on the weather with jessica burch . you can feel it on your drive there are a few times those wind gusts hit you. >> i know . i was in sacramento valley for military training and i will say the winds died down and we are left with gusty conditions this morning. if you are headed out the door in the next 15 or 30 minutes, you will be hit with gusty conditions from oakland across the bay bridge into san francisco and the peninsula. the winds died down hour by hour into this evening. it peaks around the 11:00 hour near mount diablo in the higher elevations . into this evening notice how it is morcom with the exception of mount diablo

where there are breezy conditions there . a wind advisory until 3:00 p.m. today due to king tide's. look at this still in effect starting tonight right after the king tide event . this lasted to tuesday evening, so be careful at the coastline for sneaker waves . there are videos along the coast and you live along the coast, how was it? >> during our walk on sunday morning we were commenting about the waves just pounding. people should not be in the water. there were people out there surfing. and if you make the track and, we have breaking westbound from tracy over to 680 . adding to that, chp and caltrans with the wind advisory

including along the altamonte pass . speeds at 16 miles per hour and slow and go there. give yourself extra time with busy travel times . there's a crash on eastbound 24 after broadway blocking the right side of the roadway . we are tracking brake lights because of that and it is slow out of oakland over to the tunnel, so keep that in mind . here is the san mateo bridge where it is windy as well as the bay bridge but no majoring lights just yet. a great morning to be a 49ers fan. people took to the streets in san francisco and bars across the city to celebrate last night's victory against the cowboys . >> you guys were texting back and forth . >> yeah, super excited they got the win . brock purdy looked

biden has chosen his next chief of staff . the head of the covid-19 task force and he succeeds the previous who is stepping down . in walnut creek police are searching for three people accused of breaking into two homes last night. sporting guns may have been taken from one home. the first on rock oak road just after 9:00 last night. the second that wind chime court 30 minutes later . witnesses spotted a small black sedan at both locations with three people in dark clothing inside . police recommend parking your car in your driveway and making sure that gates and doors are locked. people looking for a place to call home after fire in san francisco spread to two homes just g . an injured

firefighter had to be taken to the e.r. but is expected to be okay. thankfully nobody else was hurt . and people rescued yesterday . two people were hiking and got stuck on the cliffs after wandering off the trail. crews used rope to scale and bring the hikers to safety and everyone involved is okay . jessica burch is here and it's going to be a calm week but it was windy this morning . i start off with this live look looking into the sacco santa clara valley . it is breezy and the cameras are shaking from how windy it is . wind gusts up to 30 and even 40 miles per hour in certain spots. the winds stay strong this morning so keep that in mind to give yourself extra space on the roads. to add to that, there could be white

knuckles from the bay bridge to the golden gate bridge even into the 11:00 hour . by noon the winds died down and this is an offshore event and we calm down significantly into the evening hours and as justin mentioned, calm for the week . for the most part upper 50s and lower 60s throughout the week. then we warm up a little more . so much so that we get close to the 70s near napa and sonoma as early as this weekend . i will talk about that in the seven day forecast but let's take a step back. we are no coastal flood advisory due to the king tides. the last one will happen at noon and then we will see beach hazard statements for just our coastline alone. into the weekend, forecast model show rain in the forecast for the next 8-14 days. just when we get a dry break, the rain

returns to the forecast, but that's not until sunday . here is the warm-up we see that is more pronounced for our friends in the north bay. close to 70 for wednesday and thursday and then we cool down into the weekends . now let's talk about the windy conditions because the wind advisory will impact your drive on bay area bridges as well as the commute to the altamont pass. the dublin interchanges where mobile 5 is. are photo journalist is out and about and getting stuck in the brake lights onto 680. if you are headed toward castor valley or even 880, there are slow and go spots as you connect to 680 from 580 . a different perspective with volume westbound . brake lights at tracy as well . it's down to 14 miles per hour and a slow ride for the super commuters. the good news is the rail is up

and running which will relieve some congestions on the freeways. eastshore freeway 14 minutes from highway 4 to e n 101 to sfo is about 60 minutes . a crash at broadway and good news with no delays and everything pushed out of the roadways . the san mateo bridges gusty so be careful on the larger more high profile vehicles. smoother towards 101 and at the bay bridge things are moving along nicely as well as heading into san francisco . it is 5:20 and a new trend has neighbors talking. the response to soaring egg prices . on the topic of food, next on the morning mix, the youngest contestant to win on the food network. he has a shop in the bay area.

a 22-year-old open his own cake shop in downtown hayward . as impressive as it sounds to have your family run a shop at that age , the impressive part is how he got there pet at 19 he was the youngest contestant to win one of the adult baking competition shows on the food network . it was called big-time bake and he made an appearance on hulu's baker's dozen which got him orders for custom cakes . he told mercury news that he faced stigma that this was a job for females and he should go down a different career path. look at him now, that is beautiful .

from cbs news bay area, this is the morning edition . welcome back up 5:30 . a suspect in the shooting near los angeles is now at dead but it is not clear what his motive was for attacking a ballroom dance studio . this happened over the weekend and michelle medina joins us from monterey park . what can you tell us about the other 10 people who survived? >> reporter: well , what i can tell you is that in all there were 20 victims. 10 people 20 people 10 people were killed ,

five minute five women. additional people were heard and taken to area hospitals and their stable condition ranges from stable to critical. >> the shooting happened at 10:20 on saturday night, how fast it will please respond to the scene ? >> reporter: the call came in at 10:22 that shots were fired and authorities arrived within three minutes of the call. once they went into the dance hall, it was a horrific scene . i can tell you some of the first officers to arrive on scene were fairly new and had only been on the job a matter of months. >> it is a tragedy and we appreciate the first responders who got there quickly . thank you for your reporting this morning. and let's look at san francisco this morning where there was an increase in lunar

new deadline is may 15th for anyone covered under president biden's emergency declaration. now let's check the weather with meteorologist jessica burch . how long will the wind s stay with us? >> this is a friendly reminder for everyone at home before you head out the door to take it slow out there. it is breezy and you want the hair taught handy and may be a windbreaker. it is breezy out there right now, especially along the peninsula with wind gusts step 35 and even 40 miles per hour at times . it will die down into the evening hours tonight . this is around 9:00 a.m. with mount diablo all the way to livermore . especially at the pass is where we see breezy conditions . it moves into northbay in the afternoon hours and then slowly dies down. what is going on ? i muting water vapor imagery to pain of

fracture of this dry air right here which is streamlining its way into our coast and it is an actual offshore wind we experience today . dry and windy conditions too . those dry conditions stick around all week long but there is more moisture in the forecast and i will highlight that and the percentages coming up. for the week it is mild and windy and we will get through it . wind advisories from chp and caltrans because of those conditions. be careful on the freeways this morning , especially altamont pass were there is a wind advisory this morning . at the dublin interchange there is extra volume for the super commuters. getting busy at the tracy area and the wind that around 17 miles per hour with brake lights extending to north flynn

. then a break as you approach 580 and 680 at that interchange. the good news is you have the rail as an option today and they should be back up and running and in service today for public transit and everything is on time so hopefully we will see less cars on the roadway. 38 minutes northbound 101 all the way to sfo . just a few brake lights on the north side approaching 880 . extra volume there but overall a nice ride at the south bay. it has been nearly two months since paramedics were called to a park to save a toddler who had accidentally been overdosed on fentanyl . to this day, investigators don't know how it happened . the family reunited with first responders who stepped in to save their child's life. our devin fehely was right there .

>> by the time i arrived , all i saw was he was lying flat on his back and they had a breathing apparatus on his face assisting him with reading . apparently he was completely blue . >> reporter: he says he will nearly never forget the nightmare day that he nearly lost his son to a fentanyl overdose. he will be eternally grateful to the quick thinking firefighters and paramedics who saved his son's life . >> they administered narcan and he popped back almost instantly. >> reporter: since the recovery was as quick as the onset of symptoms , he stopped breathing and turned blue . the paramedics had to ignore the patient's age and allow themselves to believe the evidence with their eyes . >> someone who is not

responsive was characteristic of an opioid overdose and this is not my first opioid overdose. >> the mystery was how he was exposed but once they administered narcan is conditioned improved almost immediately . >> he opened his eyes and looked at me and scans the back of the ambulance and started crying. >> reporter: the twins who just turned one never know how close they came to tragedy but the parents know that a little boy blue and not breathing was pulled from a brink and because of that they will celebrate many more birthdays . >> we are super thankful they knew what to do in that moment. >> so are we . and advocacy group has asked did the federal trade commission to investigate the

price of eggs . the usda reports in california the average price for one carton of eggs was $5.97 . that is a decrease of 11% from the week prior. look at the same week in new york it was three dollars 36 sense and the midwest $3.87 and other places as low as $2.40 . some families are taking matters into their own hands now. >> she is in charge and the red one is stella and the black one is king and then we had john candy, the big girl over here , they are all hands . and a family in walnut creek can ignore the rising cost of eggs in the stores . >> we are getting around 4-6 per day which for a family of

four is perfect. >> reporter: according to data from the consumer price index, egg prices rose 60% from a year earlier. the usda reports the average price hit $7.37 which is up from the average of $4.84 in early december . compare that to the average of $2.35 we saw in january of 2022 . it's an outbreak of avian flu hitting flocks across the u.s.. it has been the deadliest outbreak in u.s. history. x applies is reduced as birds are slaughtered . it takes time for farms to replace their flocks with an uninfected flock ready to lay eggs . >> i have heard of egg prices going up and i've heard of people not being able to find eggs at the store and having them is a luxury. >> reporter: there are environmental impacts as well .

>> we crush the egg shells and use them as fertilizer for our fruit trees. the other thing is they eat our scraps and we have less food waste. >> less trash and more protein on the table for the family. >> it is the price to pay just like having a dog or another pet at home. >> reporter: a cost that is low compared to what americans pay for carton of eggs at the store . >> it's an option if you have the space and if it's allowed in your neighborhood. i checked our city ordinance and it is completely allowed in concord . it is a good option for people but there is a concern of what is going on with the avian flu and how it will impact us . we were just talking about where to find the cheapest eggs . >> more and more people getting chicken coops but when i went to the store , you said it

people in our lives and it was a good opportunity to talk to high school students from oakland to talk about important people in our lives. i want to ask you , when you got to where you are today , was there anyone who helped you get there ? >> absolutely . i had a speech teacher in high school who made the biggest difference for me. from graduating and moving on and learning all that stuff from her, it changed who i was and i look up to her a lot . >> finding out there is national mentoring and how important it is . for one person those conversations can make an impact on your life. it helps people decide . >> it is cool you were on the panel too . >> who was moderating ? >> it was so cool . one wanted to play basketball i was always thinking what would his

than normal conditions. even a warming trend for some of us with san jose and even friends to the north bay warming close to the 70s. right around the corner in the long-range model, the climate prediction center shows a chance of showers returning to the forecast with daytime highs dropping significantly . we go from close to 70 to the low 50s. that's right around the corner and we will have more on that in a bit. for you, over to you . this is 680 southbound where traffic is moving along pretty good on 680 this morning . we are not seeing brake lights or issues and things are moving nicely onto 580 right now . so far so good in that area. elsewhere if you get ready to make the ride to the dublin interchange, the

connector slow but mostly in the right lanes . if you continue to the left and straight toward castro valley , it is smoother . brake lights into the altamonte pass out of tracy where it is down to 11 miles per hour and stays slow all the way to north flynn. adding to that it is windy this morning with wind advisories for parts of the bay area and ultimate past is one of the areas and be careful traveling through their. ace rail is back in place which is good from the commuters to from stockton to stan jos÷ . brake lights out of the south bay this morning and it's getting busy on southbound 101 . that's it with no other slow spots to report and a nice start there. things are getting busy into san francisco .
