5:00 pm
locations in half >> in the past 15 minutes, our chopper otd half moon bay sheriff's substation. a law enforcement source tells us the suspect drove himself there and deputies found him in the parking lot. a look from our camera on the ground right now. this is a different view of the suspect being taken colored hat. obviously in cuffs right now. he was taken through the gates and inside the substation. >> again, we are looking at two different shooting scenes here. unclear if they are related yet. that is information we are working on. one is at a trucking supply company along highway 1. the other is at the mountain mushroom farm along highway 92.
5:01 pm
in the spanish town area. len ramirez arrived on scene there. in the last 30 minutes, like the last half hour we have witnessed. you saw firsthand. what can you tell us is happening there now? >> right now, there are still dozens of law enforcement officials. in mateo county sheriff's units and investigators. more are arriving all the time, as well as traffic on highway 92. it's quite a scene here with a lot of commotion and a lot of traffic, as well. you can see that the investigators and other personnel from an ambulance company and forensic teams are here. they have focused their attention on an area behind the blinking light there. they are pretty far up the hill there. you can see some of the white shed buildings. that is apparently where a lot of the attention is focused right now. when we arrived here, things were relatively calm for the situation involved. officers
5:02 pm
were walking around and talking to people and things like that. suddenly, out of nowhere, running, jumping into cars and taking off as quickly as possible. literally tearing out to get onto highway 92 and get to the sheriff substation, which is just about half a mile away from here. when that happened, the suspect was apparently driving around and decided to turn himself into the sheriff's office substation there in half moon bay. that's where all of the officers are heading now. a remarkable situation right now to have witnessed a scene go from relative calm to panic and urgency by the enforcement officers, taking off and getting out of here. the suspect was turning himself in.
5:03 pm
trying to get to it to make sure they had as many law enforcement people in the area. this was some sort of diversionary tactic. things could obviously go bad quickly. now here, a few more lights and sirens into the area. we can kind of see what is going on here. looks like unmarked as well as marked units and a s.w.a.t. team member getting out. that is apparently -- i would venture to guess -- i don't want to guess too much, but that would have earmarks of the suspect and taken to headquarters. he was accompanied by a s.w.a.t. team member, who is in the car right behind us. you heard the honking of the horn right there. that was one of the officers pulling out rid he is right behind you right now so please be careful as they take off. and he is going lights and
5:04 pm
sirens, as well. i would say that they probably had that suspect in one of the vehicles that we were trying to show you just now, taking him back over the hill to the sheriff's department. and obviously to a jail situation in the city where the headquarters are. just another remarkable situation here happening live as we're describing it or you. back to you. >> it is unnerving to hear the sirens. it made you curious, gosh, is there another thing unfolding now? it is hard for us to see, but from what you can see it looks like that was probably the suspect and taken to a bigger sheriff's station, though, you think. >> reporter: exactly. we do not want to get ahead of ourselves here with the information, but based on what i have seen of situations like that, that is exactly how it looks like when they have a suspect in custody. maybe four or five other cars around him in case something
5:05 pm
happens. and there is some sort of an ambush situation, they have s.w.a.t. team members with the vehicle as they are taking him to the headquarters. it apparently has wrapped up at the location of the substation. now going downtown. >> thank you very much, len ramirez. a major turn of events within the last half hour. the suspect taking into custody and possibly moved to the jail, out of the area. we are looking at the areas right now. we still believe this is the mushroom mountain farm area. a different location where investigators are looking. it is a massive complex. there could be multiple scenes that they are checking at this time. >> you saw that earlier, ryan, that they were leaving out what looked like possible evidence markers as they were patrolling the scene. but you can see the
5:06 pm
chopper panning out in a minute. but this is mountain mushroom farm off of san mateo boulevard. one of the shooting locations there. emergency vehicles and that looks like some kind of greenhouse dome tent structures there. about half a dozen trailers and some other more greenhouse looking structures. lots of green space, which i am assuming is where some of the cultivation of these mushrooms happens. i'm not sure about the delicacies of growing mushrooms but it looks like this is where it all happens there. it was probably a couple dozen workers standing outside of the location there. four people were shot. waiting to hear official confirmation on their condition there. >> our cruise on the ground
5:07 pm
when the suspect was taken into custody. you can see the suspect right there wearing a fleece vest, a red shirt, looked like a white hat and blue jeans. definitely in cuffs right now on this picture. they took them from the parking lot area, through a gated area and inside that metcalf substation. we do believe moments ago, heard all the sirens blaring past len ramirez. we believe he was being taken to the jail at that time. it was a dicey scene for a while and then very quiet. became very act of and this is the end result of the last rush of activity that we saw from len ramirez and all of those sheriff's deputies were making their way outside the farm. about a mile away to the substation. >> we are still waiting for official confirmation that the suspect did turn himself in. that is not officially
5:08 pm
confirmed yet. but the suspect, or a suspect in the shooting is now in custody. let's get down to the newsroom to sarah who has been keeping an eye on the details of the second shooting along highway 1. sarah, what can you tell us about that? >> this is kind of what makes the situation a little bit complicated. we do have these two separate shooting scenes. two separate crime scenes. presumably, multiple investigative elements happening at both. the second scene is at 2125 cabrillo highway south. new video taken in from the ground at that scene. this is pretty industrial out here. landscaping supplies store. a d.o.t. yard in the area. perhaps most importantly, some kind of child development center. not too far away from here. a preschool with young kids. this is something we are looking into, as well. i would be incredibly concerned given the proximity to this location.
5:09 pm
we are looking into it and the newsroom here. we did see a large law enforcement presence on the ground at the scene. we saw a lot of sheriff's deputies leaving in a hurry around the same time the suspect was being arrested. presumably driving over to the substation. we do know that the suspect showed up at the media staging area at the substation and then was arrested, taken into custody. we've heard from earlier sources that he was in a red lexus suv. and again, we saw on the ground a few minutes ago that he may have been taken to the substation. a jail and more resources. we really don't know how many were shot at the second location or how many died. incredibly important. we are not working to confirm for you right now. >> let's get back to len ramirez. live in front of the mountain mushroom farm on san mateo boulevard. what have you
5:10 pm
learned? >> reporter: we're not getting any official information on the ground about a number of victims or anything like that. i can tell you that the apparent group of workers is still gathered there. you can see the workers standing in front of a fan. forensic laboratory vans and investigators of all sorts here. being spoken to by a sheriff's deputy. maybe taking down information so that they can be contacted later. apparently they witnessed whatever happened here. staying here together, you can see the sullen faces of some of the workers who may have witnessed some of the horror that played out. half moon bay this afternoon, just off of highway 92, just before you get into half moon bay proper from
5:11 pm
the 280 core door. the situation just in the very beginning stages there, there's going to be a lot of investigation going on. going to be making statements. if there is any good news in a situation like this, apparently, the suspect in the shooting turn himself in. and was whisked away a few minutes ago from the half moon bay area, going back over the hill into the sheriff's headquarters in redwood city to be questioned. the situation right here is still relatively calm, based on everything that we see. we do not know what is, what exactly the crime scene is going to look like. but there is some work behind me in this cluster of buildings. a very difficult situation for investigators as they begin to piece through the potential for
5:12 pm
a number of fatal victims in this case. back to you. >> thank you, len ramirez. reporting outside of the crime scenes at the mountain mushroom farm and half moon bay. as we wait for confirmation from the sheriff's department, they did send this update. update, suspect is in custody. there is no ongoing threat to the community at this time. that is good news for the community and san mateo county. we are still waiting to hear confirmation on how many people were shot or killed. san mateo county sheriff's department. still waiting to get direct confirmation from the san mateo county sheriff's department ourselves. >> this is video from over the sheriff's substation there. these are ground pictures.
5:13 pm
particularly interested in the red lexus suv. we are hearing official reports that the suspect was potentially writing in that car. we are getting conflicting reports on how the suspect came to the substation. if he, in fact, turned himself in. or if there were other circumstances. but confirmed that the suspect is in custody. potentially, the red lexus was the vehicle he was riding in. when they took him into custody, it was near that vehicle at the parking lot of the half moon bay substation. 10 minutes to go. len ramirez saw a group of police vehicles, sheriff vehicles, driving by with what looked like an escort of the suspect then taken to the headquarters. the sheriff's station headquarters in half moon bay. a few miles away. this is the suspect being taken
5:14 pm
into custody. still not confirmed that this is the suspect in these multiple shootings here. this is what transpired a little less than an hour ago. the suspect there near the red lexus in the half moon bay sheriff's substation parking lot being taken into custody. >> i should mention again, we will repeat the one sent out by the san mateo county sheriff's office. suspect is in custody. there is no ongoing threat to the community at this time. i repeat, no ongoing threat to the community at this time. the suspect is in custody. the person they're looking for, we can possibly assume that is the person who turned himself in. a live look from chopper 5. it's a vast complex. two different crime scenes. one off of cabrillo highway, a trucking supply company. in the mushroom farm. there is two or three
5:15 pm
different locations that they are really focusing on. earlier, they are focusing on an area where it appeared that there could be housing. we saw trailers and rvs. some shacks. tarps over it. look like living quarters. some yellow tape around those buildings. some evidence markers. potentially some bullet casings. second location in the greenhouse area . a vast, complex, very large area. several workers working in the area. not sure what they are looking for exactly. highly focused on this section. >> we saw about a half a dozen trailers over on the side. probably the biggest. if you see these greenhouses, probably taking up the most amount of square footage of this mountain mushroom farm. there is a lot
5:16 pm
of green space. as you mentioned, trailers and these domes which look like greenhouse type of areas. a couple dozen workers are outside right now the mountain mushroom farm talking to sheriff's deputies, talking to law enforcement about what i can only imagine to be a very traumatic scene and a very traumatic day for the people who live and work on the mountain mushroom farm off of san mateo boulevard. you can see a large group of law enforcement investigators there. looks like they are strategizing about where to move next. again, ryan, you are mentioning that this is kind of like a greenhouse area. we are talking about two different locations here. mountain mushroom farm, where you are looking right now and the other one would be a trucking supply company there off of cabrillo highway. what looks like a very industrial area there. landscaping supplies store, d.o.t. yard in the area. as
5:17 pm
mentioned, there is also a day care near the area as well. they were told to shelter in place while all of this was going on. the suspect is in custody. no threat to the area. as you can imagine, the investigation is still ongoing. >> this is the second location. this is the trucking supply company. you are getting a live look there. you can be deep in the background, several detectives and investigators in the area. let's kind of replay how this all happens. first it was going along and just trickling in. and everything at once. this happened a few hours ago. the sheriff's office respontoooting incidentthmulti on the area of highway 92 in the half moon bay city limits. we then later found out there was two different locations. mountain mushroom farm area and
5:18 pm
the trucking supply company off cabrillo highway. len ramirez joined us around 5:00. it was quiet and we were slowly getting bits of information. all of the sudden, it just turned into -- i would not say chaos -- >> urgency. we saw five different emergency vehicles leaving very quickly from the mountain mushroom farm and also, there were vehicles that we saw later on video from the trucking supply area off of highway 1. they were racing to the sheriff's substation where, presumably, they were making an arrest of the suspect. we were told again, confirmed that the suspect in these two cases, and this particular shooting is in custody. there is no threat to the neighborhood or the area right now. you can kind of pan out just how big of an area we are talking about here. multiple law enforcement vehicles. kind of piled up
5:19 pm
there along the street, surrounding that area as they tried to continue their investigation. as we mentioned, we did not want to say it was a moment of calm, but there is a sense of urgency. you get a sense when there is an active shooter or suspect potentially on the premises there. suddenly, it changed on a dime when he was giving his report. multiple cars turned on their sirens and raced out as quickly as possible. it was remarkable to see. >> we were there at the substation and copy arrest from chopper 5. also capturing the arrest. a gentleman in a red shirt and a fleece. here is the video from chopper 5 wearing blue jeans and a white cap and potentially driving the red or maroon lexus. that seems to be the vehicle that the sheriff's deputies and investigators are focusing on. this is the arrest as they take that person into custody, and cups. back to the parking lot through a set of
5:20 pm
gates and into the substation there, where he was later taken, we believe, to the san mateo county jail. >> i want to be sure that we make this very clear. we have not received official confirmation that this is actually the suspect. we are making assumptions based on the activity there. not only surrounding this particular rest but also the sheriff's substation in half moon bay. this is what we know right now. a suspect was taken into custody. unclear, officially, if you in fact turned himself in. but we are sure, we have confirmation from the sheriff's office that a suspect, the suspect, has been taken into custody and there is no threat yet to the community. as you can see there, the sheriff saying that the suspect is in custody. still waiting for confirmation that the man you saw on the video there is actually the suspect, but we are going to get confirmation there and a press conference but i'm sure will be delivered shortly. len ramirez is live in
5:21 pm
front of one of the shooting locations in half moon bay off of san mateo boulevard. >> the mood here has calmed down and things have slowed down ever since the excitement that you were describing with the suspect turning himself in and being whisked out of here. as night is falling, things are now going into more of a predictable scenario in terms of the investigators securing their crime scene. the forensic teams are here and they will likely be here all night. as we've been mentioned before, the workers are still here as well. they've been here throughout the afternoon. it looks like if we pan a little bit further left, they might be dismissed by the investigators if they've got their contact information. also some children here, as well. they may be, you know, kids of some of the workers. workers getting off at this time normally. there would
5:22 pm
be childcare issues with some of them. you see some of the kids running around their. earlier, they were taking down information from the workers because they were standing around just outside the parking lot here. and it looks like they were taking down information to contact them as the investigation continues. things have definitely slowed down here in terms of what we can see. we have not gotten any kind of a statement or any kind of news conference or anything like that for many law enforcement officials here. kind of piecing things together from what we can see and what we see now is that things have calmed down. the suspect apparently turning themselves in. the officers here, at least a half-dozen of them, many of them in an unmarked unit. full technical swap gear.
5:23 pm
they took off from the area to go about half a mile to where the substation is. another half hour, 45 minutes later, and entourage of officers including marked units and unmarked units and s.w.a.t. team members taking off down the highway to go back to the redwoods city area where the suspect is likely being questioned at this moment. that is the situation from here. back to you in the studio. >> one of the first crime scenes. this is at the mountain mushroom farms. let's go to sarah in the newsroom keeping a close eye on the second situation. >> reporter: one of the most difficult parts of a situation like this. we've had far too much practice at these massive shooting events which seem to be too common in the country and disturbing every single time. the toll that it takes on families and loved ones. we got crews on the ground at the second location. it does seem
5:24 pm
like there are some people there waiting on word about their loved ones. i just want to make it clear, that's one of the most important pieces of information that we are waiting on for law enforcement. confirmation of the condition of those people who were shot. whether or not there are any more victims and of course, they have to make notifications to families. most importantly, which i imagine is happening right now. but some people here that second location as law enforcement has been pouring in on the phone. waiting for word on their loved ones. we spoke to a woman, who you see here, who was waiting on word about her partner and whether or not her partner was somehow involved in a sense that they may have been shot. she is obviously desperate for information. so many people are waiting on similar news right now. waiting to see how their loved ones are doing. we are going live to an interview on
5:25 pm
the ground. let's listen in. >> straight up the road and they are in an amazing part of town. i love all of our farmers. we have an industry around here that kind of goes unnoticed because it is turning into a commuter town to all of silicon valley. we love those residents, too, but we are in agricultural and artist community at heart. we are pretty tightknit. >> reporter: do you still live or work here? >> i do. i work out in san francisco right now, but i am a half moon bay resident for 15 or 20 years now. >> reporter: thank you again for your time. >> in queue. >> okay. all right. you were just hearing from a resident of half moon bay just talking about the community in which she lives. talking about that. still very much an artist and agricultural community. people working on farms and artists
5:26 pm
from the cultural world, as well. it is also a commuter town of folks that commute into the bigger cities. you are looking live there. it looks like that is at the mushroom farm. this is from len ramirez' as camera there. you can see agencies responding. some plainclothes. some in uniform. from the sheriff's office. and it just talking about, this is the hardest part, i think, for so many family members waiting to hear on the status of their loved ones that were at these locations. obviously, law enforcement trying to contact family members to let them know the status of what happened. what we know is that there are at least four people that were shot. we have still not confirmed ourselves from the sheriff's department the status of those victims. from local
5:27 pm
state senator josh becker. he tweeted out that at least four people were shot and killed. we, ourselves, are waiting for official confirmation on that. >> it was heartbreaking, the video that sarah was showing of the woman. possibly a mother or wife or daughter or sister just on the phone number just without knowing, right? we do not know what is happening. one woman was a half moon bay resident for the past 15, 20 years. a tight community. this is part of the bay area. these are our neighbors. people who live next door to us. this is going to be a tough reality for this community for some time. >> talking about the agricultural community being such a important part of the fabric that makes half moon bay half moon bay and how important they are to the area. yeah. going back to see this poor woman waiting to hear the
5:28 pm
status of her partner. still working on details as to where these shootings take place and what actually transpired. we know that one location was this mountain mushroom farm. the other was this industrial park. there were a couple of different businesses there. as sarah mentioned, also a daycare in the area. we don't know the details of what had happened at both of these locations. we know that what they are, where they are. still waiting to hear on the status of these potential victims and the circumstances of the shooting. >> we still don't know how many people were actually shot. we are hearing people right now and the tweet that comes from the state senator showing at least four people dead. shot and killed. he was getting his information from the san mateo county sheriff's department. awaiting those minute details of what exactly happened. we don't know a motive of what
5:29 pm
happened. we do know that the mountain mushroom farm area is a very large complex. and we see investigators in different parts of the complex. talking about two different crime scenes. within that form complex, there are two or three different areas that investigators are interested in. one of them was this greenhouse area. they were growing mushrooms in that area. and another area where there were several rvs and trailers. and what appeared to be living quarters. this is the greenhouse area. where chopper five is now focusing. you can see a large presence of investigators gathered in a circle in the middle is they are trying to figure out what to do in this area. the other location was a residential area where trailers, shacks, and different living quarters. he saw the yellow tape around some of those buildings and complexes. also saw the evidence markers. i do not want to get ahead of myself, but when you see those in these
5:30 pm
situations, they are usually marking bullet casings. >> we can make the assumption right now that they are gathering all of the evidence they can, and reading scouring the area for evidence and interviewing witnesses, people who were there at the time. what we have noticed about this mushroom farm is that it sort of pans out here it is kind of a maze. it's quite large. countless rows of the green houses. then you see these areas, which i am assuming is just part of the mushroom growing process. it's a huge complex. on the side, you see those trailers. unclear if this is part of the office building or if those are places where people were living . at the time, you can see the emergency vehicles scattered around the different parts of this mushroom farm. this is one of two locations. the other off of highway 1 that was near a trucking supply area. kind of an industrial complex. that was not as large, but did kind of
5:31 pm
have a mix of different businesses and then a daycare as sarah was mentioning. that was not far away from that area. both of these different locations, these two crime scenes completely blocked
