play to stay past 2024. but as andrea nakano shows us, some die hard fans are saying no way. >> reporter: it's almost time to play ball again at the coliseum. while excitement usually comes with the start of a new baseball season, that's not the case for many a's fans. >> i consider myself more of an activist now rather than a fan. it feels like we're just fighting to keep the team here and keep them in oakland. >> reporter: jeremy goodrich has bled green and gold since he was a child. typically at this time of year, the chatter would be about players reporting to spring training and how well the team may do this year. instead, the team skipping town is top of mind. >> i personally think if the a's are serious about the relocation to las vegas, they need to get out of oakland after this season. >> reporter: the a's confirm they met with oakland and alameda county officials thursday to talk about extending the lease at the coliseum. their new home is not

expected to be readily to go in las vegas until 2028 at the earliest. but city leaders are demanding more rent by asking for a share of the roughly $67 million tv contract money. on top of that, they want john fisher to give up the the team name and colors, and for mlb to guarantee oakland an expansion team. goodrich says obviously the easiest solution is for the a's to stay. >> obviously there's a good situation for the a's to realize what's at stake and they should really come back to the table and get the stadium done in oakland. i think fans would be much more accommodating of a lease being extended. >> reporter: with the project site and financing up in the air with the las vegas project, fans like jeremy feel keeping the team rooted in oakland is still a possibility. >> we're not giving up hope. we're hoping either john fisher figures out the right thing to do by either building
1:41 am
in oakland or selling the team to an owner committed to oakland. >> reporter: the a's have also looked at playing in minor league ball parks, but they'd only be able to collect on the tv contract money if they stayed in the bay area. both sides say they had productive talks, but haven't scheduled the next meeting. time, though, is ticking to close on a lease for a place to play beyond the 2024 season. >> while it's been tough for oakland sports fan, there's a glimmer of hope for people who want to be invested in a home team. the city's new minor league team, the ballers, has big plans for their new home. the historic raymondi park in east oakland. they're planning to invest $1.6 million into the site adding a new scoreboard, updating the field, and adding seats for 2500 fans. >> back in oakland, going to get folks excited and hopefully bring revenue to the local economy. >> i think it's good we have more things in the community.
1:42 am
the warriors are in the city now, and we have the raiders who are in vegas now. >> the team says the new stadium isn't just for them. they want to make it a place the city can use for the rest of the year when they aren't playing. the ballers first game is set for june 4th. now we turn to the north bay where six students were taken to the hospital after some kind of mysterious illness swept through their napa classroom. as many as two dozen kids suddenly got nauseous, had headaches, and were fatigued. it happened inside a choir classroom at the start of the school day. the fire department and pg&e crews tried to determine what was causing the problem while the rest of the school sheltered in place. >> teachers were getting e-mails about what's going on. no one still really new other than kids started passing out and the fire truck had to come and pick up some kids with the ambulance. >> the big question, why these kids got sick, seems to be a medical mystery. >> we didn't find anything. no
1:43 am
rings on our monitors. we're still at a loss as to what caused this. >> first responders did not detect gas or carbon monoxide in the choir room. the condition of the students taken to the hospital is still unknown. tonight candles lit in kansas city in the wake of a mass shooting at their super bowl rally. a 43-year-old dj and mother of two was killed. police say half the people hurt are younger than 16. they say the shooting stemmed from a fight that broke out among multiple people. tonight we're getting a bird's eye view of the moments after that happened, and a quick warning, you might find the video disturbing. dozens of people ran their their lives after they heard gunshots. others said they were confused and thought what they were hearing was fireworks. police have not said much about the two suspects in custody, but we know they are teenagers.
1:44 am
this video caught the moment a group of people tackled someone with a gun. >> the entire time we were holding him down people are yelling he's got a gun, he's got a gun. when he was tackled, the gun fell. >> this is the 48th mass shooting reported in the u.s. so far this year. and this east bay gun bust was so big that the numbers sound made up. a million rounds of ammo and hundreds of guns all found inside someone's home in richmond. the attorney general said multiple law enforcement agencies and a bomb squad from travis air force base helped serve a search warrant at the home and found an arsenal. 60 assault rifles, silencers, hand guns, thousands of large capacity magazines, and a lot more. they wrote the suspect was legally barred from owning weapon, but didn't say why. he was arrested and has not been identified. we know a.i. can plan your

vacation, write your college paper, or author your resignation letter. now it's bringing ideas to a new life in a whole new way thanks to a bay area company. heading into a busy president's day weekend in the weather department because we have not one, but two atmospheric rivers. the moisture showing up in green on futurecast headed for the coast of california. the second one looks to hang out for awhile with the rain and wind in the first alert forecast. she hasn't been around a male for eight years, but she won't be lonely for long because she's about to have a baby. we should tell you we're talking about a sting ray. the mystery that's captivated a north carolina zoo and a good chunk of the internet too. plus, there are probably a lot of things you don't want to see on a flight, but i promise you this tops the list.

san francisco-based open a.i. revealed some jaw dropping new technology today that uses artificial intelligence to turn text into really realistic videos. the new system is called sora. it's not available to the public yet, it's in a
1:49 am
testing phase. but it's already gotten some criticism. some people are worried that people could abuse this kind of technology to create video as that do all kinds of things like mislead voters in an election, for example. the ceo sam altman displayed some of the technology's more playful uses online today. he asked people on x to give him some written ideas that sora could turn into a.i. generated videos. the person that thought of this prompt has an imagination, i would say. he wanted a video of a bike race on the ocean with different animals riding the bikes. altman posted this response. an a.i. video of animals riding bikes in sneakers and flippers, a turtle balancing on a unicycle. kate asked for a cooking instructional video on making gnocchi in a rustic

kitchen with cinematic lighting. here's what a.i. came up with. some think the grandma is kind of creepy. maybe the technology isn't perfected, because if you look closely the spoon she's using just suddenly disappears. someone else asked for two golden retrievers podcasting on top of a mountain, probably not unlike what paul would have requested. that's what we have. that is straight out of the imagination of meteorologist paul heggen. that's what he would want. >> i know it's not real video, but i want it to be. >> i know you do. i know you do. >> can i produce that podcast? >> that podcast is probably voiced by you. >> i guess so because the dogs would just pant into the microphone or try to eat it. >> there's something a little

off. it's super realistic, but something's not quite right. >> the uncanny valley. >> i can think of some weatherman replacement uses we're not too fond of. type in the forecast, and suddenly we have paul. >> yeah, they'll great an a.i. version of a meteorologist that will look a lot better than me. let's look at what's happening weather-wise heading into a busy weekend. storm number one is still way out over the pacific inching closer to us, but we have one more dry day in store for tomorrow, and then we head into a wet president's day weekend. let's look at futurecast and start the clock at 4:00 tomorrow afternoon with plenty of clouds overhead, but no moisture out of the clouds yet tomorrow. and still going to be warm with high temperatures in the low to mid-60s for most of the bay area. but the rain chances increase as we head through late friday night. after midnight into early saturday morning. light to moderate rain showers for the first half of saturday. then the heavier rain arrives. moderate to heavy downpour
1:52 am
heading through saturday afternoon into saturday evening. the first storm system is a quick mover. it tapers off to light showers by midnight saturday night. and we stay in a relative break in the action. just light off and on showers through the first half of sunday. and then storm number two, the potential troublemaker arrives with moderate to heavy rainfall moving back in sunday afternoon and sticking around quite a bit longer. the parent storm system just hangs out off the coast over the course of a couple of days sending waves of this moderate to heavy rainfall across the bay area through sunday night, throughout monday, and into monday night, even into tuesday. quite a bit of snow in the sierra as well. you can see the tail lingering into wednesday before the showers finally quiet down. so how much rain are we talking about? let's look at the numbers, with a range of possibilities thrown in for a few locations as well. we're looking at just over an inch and a half for san jose, but the boom and bust amounts represent the range of possibilities. as little as an inch up to two and a half
1:53 am
inches of total rainfall. the difference is even more stark looking at concord. the boom amount is three and a half inches. the bust amount just over an inch. from a forecaster's perspective, that's too wide a range for comfort. 2.8 inches of rain is expected for downtown san francisco, but again, when we have these storm systems that tend to park in place, that makes them tricky to forecast exactly when they're finally going to budge out of the way. that's going to have a huge impact on how much rain we get. closer to the north bay. take a look at the number for santa rosa. four inches is about what we expect. just under that. but if the storm system parks for a little longer, over six inches of rain could easily add up, and that's way too much rain in a fairly short period of time. and the wind energy is also something we have to monitor. first storm system saturday, the wind gusts mostly in the 20 to 30 miles per hour range. maybe 30 to 40 along the coast for a brief period of time. not going to be long enough to put a significant
1:54 am
stress on the power grid. but the next storm system, while it's not going to bring the kind of wind energy we saw a week and a half ago, we'll still have wind gusts primarily on monday kicking up to 30 miles per hour. and with the wet soil in the area, we're looking at the possibility of tree damage and resulting power outages. sporadic, instead widespread, but still something we have to monitor. and in the sierra, a few inches of snow out of the first system. a few feet of snow out of the second system. any travel in that direction from president's day onward will be strongly discouraged. let's take a look at the seven-day forecast. obviously it is a busy one. we've got alert days in the forecast saturday and sunday and monday and again tuesday before the rain finally tapers off to lingering showers on wednesday. then our next dry day is the last day of the seven-day forecast. it's a week from today. it's going to be a long road between now and then. we'll be here keeping
