6:00 am
this is good. it's very fresh. i like the sauce. i'm a saucy woman. probably not the best. not the best... she came in a white sedan. tow it. almost like a flavor bomb. i don't think it's a fast food hamburger. this is more like homemade. -it's me! -ahahaha! oh shoot, jack! if this is your new burger... yeah? -i'm going to you. say hello to the best-rated burger in fast food. welcome to jack in the box! hi there, thanks so much for joining us this morning. it's wednesday, march 27th. >> let's get started. >> the whole bridge just fell down. start -- started whoever
6:01 am
-- to everybody. the whole bridge just collapsed. >> you can hear the panicked moments after baltimore's francis scott key bridge crumbles. a community in mourning with the rescue's transition to recovery. that's another advantage to california. because of the earthquakes, we've had to design our bridges so they can absorb energy. >> the baltimore collapse might have you concerned about our bay area bridges. experts calm your fears. i think now we really are like valued and appreciated for helping people express who they really are and finding other people like them. >> changing the dating game and the search for a special someone. an opportunity to find love in the lgbtq community. and the mega millions run is finally over. a winning ticket for the jackpot. but don't lose hope. you have another chance tonight to live out your lottery dreams. oh. lottery dreams. they may be gone. but they're back tonight. so it's kind of weird place to be. i'm gianna franco. so i'm still feeling hopeful. >> yes. we got to stay hopeful
6:02 am
right and good morning to everybody. we're almost halfway through the workweek and i'm reed cowan and we continue the spirit of hope this morning at 6:00. taking a live look outside on this beautiful wednesday morning. so much to be grateful for here in the bay area and we wish you all safe travels over that bridge. whether you are coming into the city of san francisco or going over to oakland. we wish you well and part of that is wishing paul well this morning. good morning paul, thanks so much for being with us this morning. >> hey guys good morning to you and i'm happy to report we're talking a lot about rain. two different storms. there's rain coming. this morning right now, getting out the door, rain-free. the rain has stayed well to the north our radar currently is dry. so the morning commute will not be a problem when it comes to weather. i can't tell you how fast the cars are going and the traffic but the weather part of it is going to be good because the rain right now is even north of yucaipa. northern mendocino county and humboldt that's getting the rainfall right now. it's going to be several hours before that rain works its way south. so your first alert weather headlines
6:03 am
and we're looking at a dry morning commute. but rain does move in throughout the day today. it will spread south throughout the day. we'll be soggy this evening. the evening commute will not be as fortunate weather-wise as what we're going to get this morning. and it's the first of two systems. we have two different storms heading our way. and the second one will give us a rain chance over a two day period. this one in and out pretty much today. the second one is going to get us soggy on friday as well as saturday, those are your weather headline. here's what we expect for the north bay specifically. i chose santa rosa for a reason. you will be one of the first larger cities to get the rain perhaps before lunchtime and then light rain through the afternoon and not going to be that warm afternoon temperatures today only in the 60s. so let's take a look at what we have temperature-wise today. where highs will be markedly cooler than yesterday. not as much sunshine. novato 58 and san francisco 60 and napa with rain this afternoon for you only 57. oakland 62 and
6:04 am
concord 63. 63 in redwood city and 63 for livermore and 64 for fremont. and for those of you watching in the south bay, good morning to you, your highs will be in the mid 60s and you will see temperatures right around 67-degrees in san jose this afternoon. more on that second storm and how long it lasts coming up. more on your traffic right now with gianna. good morning. good morning and yeah it's get l busy out there on the bay area bridges. especially as you head towards the bay bridge this morning. that is officially backed up with the metering lights on and a busy ride as you head into san francisco this morning. so a little slow coming off the eastshore freeway as well. that is the slowest approach into the maze this morning. i'm going to zoom in towards 580 as you head towards the dublin interchange. westbound right at el charro road, there's a crash blocking at least one lane. that right lane. so traffic is backed up well beyond 84 at this point. busy anyway coming into the altamont pass with the travel time of 54 minutes, 205 over to 680. reed? looking live at baltimore this morning. we follow the wreckage of the francis scott key bridge as divers in the
6:05 am
water do the horrible work of recovering the bodies of six construction workers who are now by this morning presumed dead. look at this video here behind me. it shows the bridge standing one moment and then right there, you are going to see that container ship hit it. and this is the result in just seconds. the entire bridge fails, collapses, right there into the water. and when you see that go down, you have to be mindful that this bridge every day and until this happens, served tens of thousands of people in baltimore. so today, there in that part of the country so many echoing what maryland's governor said yesterday. losing the bridge like this is a shock. watch. >> the whole bridge just fell down. start -- start -- whoever to everybody. the whole bridge just collapsed. >> well, people like that want to understand how this happened so here's the update this morning. that container ship you see right there lost power and was adrift over the river and sounding mayday alarms. so police quickly stopped traffic going on to the bridge and act of heroism by many accounts but little help for those who were
6:06 am
already there on the bridge as it collapsed seconds after that cargo collision. two survivors pulled from the water. six others who went down with the bridge presumed dead. their families watching helplessly this morning at the water's edge. >> i can't imagine how painful today has been for these families. >> you know, yesterday at this time we used the words rescue but overnight that word turned to recovery. traffic is also a mess in baltimore this morning as the entire busy port area is closed off. you know, we feel the story in the bay area deeply not only because of the human impacts but because we know we debend on bridges where we live. the keel bridge in baltimore serves about the same number of cars every day as the richmond-san rafael bridge. and we see container and cruise shims all the time. that traffic on the waters often near the san rafael bridge over by the golden gate bridge. and the bay bridge and chances are gianna, as you look at traffic this morning, start to stack up the metering lights are on right now, it leaves a lot of us over the last 24 hours wondering if it could happen to
6:07 am
us. or if it has happened here. >> oh, for sure. i mean so many commuters and so many loved ones and family members of people you know take our bridges every single fay and if you remember, reed, the old bay bridge actually took a couple of big hits within the span of six years. in 2007, the cosco busan slammed into a bridge support tower ripping a gash into the side of the ship and it spilled about 52,000 gallons of oil right into the bay. then over in 2013, an empty oil tanker caused minor damage when it struck a bridge tower and this was because of heavy fog and we have fog here if the bay area. both times of course the bridge stood its grounds and caltrans tells our wilson walker that's actually by design. >> this is the most seismically advanced bridge ever designed. right? the eastern span of the bay bridge. >> reporter: caltrans' bart ney talking about the first line of defense on the new bay bridge and that's the fender system that you see here. and while this one is unique to the tower foundation of the eastern span,
6:08 am
there's something like this on every bridge in the bay area. >> so some of those systems have completely different foundations. so they never actually touch the bridge. other bridges have the fenders designed into their foundations so they're designed to actually crumple and absorb the energy. the idea is that the vessel never actually hits the bridge structure. >> reporter: i imagine as people travel around the bay area, they're going to see some different engineering. but it's all doing the same thing. >> that's 100% correct. because it's almost a bridge zoo in the bay area. gets so many different types of bridges. depending on where you are at, the fender system has been designed for that particular bridge. yesterday's operations we're hampered by a reduced visibility. the problem we really had with the illusions that we've seen has been when oil tankers hit them. the ships take the damage, not the bridge. the ships don't make it to the bridge and that's by design. flush but if
6:09 am
an oil tanker, suddenly you have oil to deal with in the bay. you pick it up and it's just that -- consistency of that -- of that goo. >> reporter: in this respect, the cosco busan spill is evidence the fender system can work, but what about the circumstances as we understand them in baltimore? with the large ship landing a direct hit at pretty good speed. >> again, so that impact is being reported at being about 8 knots. which is significant for a ship of that size. but had we seen something like that here in one of our bay bridges, the fender systems are designed to withstand that. >> reporter: it's not just the fenders. all of the bay's bridges have been retrofitted some several times over. so they all have an added factor of resilience in the event of a collision. >> so that's another advantage to california. because of the earthquakes, we've had to design our bridges so they can absorb energy. so even if you get the bridge actually being touched, all of our bridges have got the ability to move a little bit. but the idea really is is not to have a vessel hit the structure.
6:10 am
>> really interesting stuff there. the key bridge collapse isn't expected to impact the port of oakland but it could cause some disruptions in the supply chain since right now the port of baltimore is blocked. it's really one of the busiest on the east coast. president biden says the federal government will pay to rebuild the bridge. and coming up at 6:30, jarred hill will join us with an update on the bridge collapse live from maryland. we'll continue to update you of course on this story. you can find all the information on air and online at kpix.com and on the free cbs news app. looking live this morning at the city of oakland. good morning to our friends in the east bay you know after more than a year without a permanent police chief, finally a chance to meet the man tapped to replace leronne armstrong fired by mayor sheng thao. we're talking about floyd mitchell the new top cop boss and front and center city hall for you to meet. he has been in the running for the oakland job for months. his first day on the job is april and we know it's going to bring a lot of challenges. listen. he's got

[ cheering and applause ] >> this city will always have a special place in my heart. you know, i grew up just a few miles from this very spot. >> that's nicole shanahan a lawyer and tech entrepreneur based in san francisco. she's a deep pocketed supporter of kennedy. in fact, she reportedly spent millions for a kennedy super bowl ad to raise his profile. and she's the ex-wife of a google co-founder and hey sound off on social

6:13 am
6:14 am
6:15 am
taking a live look outside on this wednesday morning. okay. we know you get to 5:00 p.m. and say okay finally i'm over the hump. but we get to 6:15 a.m. and kind of feel like we are. good morning to all of you. whether you are waking up north, south, east or west. it the bay area and it's beautiful. populated by a lot of bridge builders and change makers. coming up we're having interview with san francisco
6:16 am
sheriff paul miyamoto. another paul is joining us now to talk about the weather. as soon as you get out of bed on this shift on a wednesday morning you are made it over the hump. woken up three times for the week. >> bed and a burger. >> start sliding downhill quickly after that. let's talk about some weather. and what we have going on right now. we are all cloudy. the clouds have rolled in. the rain is going to take its time. some of you in the south bay may not get rain until 4:00, 5:00 this afternoon but it's cloudy now. you were in the 30s yesterday. this morning mid 40s for petaluma and mid- to upper 40s for novato and we hop across the golden gate bridge. and it's 52 in san francisco. napa, upper 40s. oakland, low 50s and redwood city currently 45 degrees. fremont, in the low 50s and san jose, is checking in in the upper 40s and low 50s as well. 47 degrees at mineta airport. we are looking at temperatures this morning under mostly cloudy conditions in the 40s and 50s. radar will be an issue later on today. darren will have the forecast for you and he's going to be talking
6:17 am
about rain right over san francisco. right over the east bay and the south bay. the 680 corridor. up and down the peninsula. not yet. not this morning. the rain is north of fort bragg. and north of yucaipa. it's going to be a while before it gets here, snowfall will move into the sierra. there's a winter storm warning which goes into the effect just before lunchtime today. widespread snowfall totals of 6 to 12 inches and isolated areas may get 1 to 2 feet and the highest peaks is going to be breezy to windy there as well. that's the winter storm warning. san francisco, today, lot of clouds and all day long. not as pretty to get outside as it was yesterday. the breeze will build in the afternoon as the storm gets closer and upper 50s. but look no rainfall in the city. until about 4:00 in the afternoon. so it will get here. it's just going to take some time to get here. so here's the storm. it's centered due west of portland, oregon and you can see the rain shield is now moved in over the olympic peninsula of western washington up and down interstate 5 in oregon. and is working its way toward us. first futurecast i want to show
6:18 am
you is wind. this is not rainfall. this is wind. the winds by early this afternoon starting to pick up 15, 20, 25 miles per hour. this is now 8:00 tonight. about 20 miles per hour for you in concord and livermore. so breezy conditions as this moves through and i don't think it's enough to bring down trees or power lines. but it will be a noticeable wind outside later on today as the front comes through. so where's the rain? this is 10:30 in the morning. still way up in the north bay. toward the lunch hour we're beginning to see some more scattered showers? napa and sonoma and marin county. this is early in the afternoon still north of san francisco. 5:30 drive home in work, it will be starting to get wet but won't make it to the south bay until this evening. 9:00 is a really wet hour for us and the showers moving out thursday morning. but will be into that kind of in-between pattern before the next storm. where we'll see scattered showers but also some sunshine. let's take a look at the extended forecast because it's pretty soggy. there are two storms coming. the first
6:19 am
one gets here today. that's what we're dealing with this evening then we get the little bit of a break on thursday, friday and saturday. second storm is going to last two days. it likely will leave sometime saturday night or sunday morning yielding mainly dry sunday afternoon for easter and then next week's storms are gone. sunshine is back highs in the 60s and 70s. let's see how the roads are doing this morning on a dry wednesday morning. here's gianna. good morning. >> you were saying it's dry right now because that certainly helps this morning commute. we know once the rain real sells in. busier on the roadways. sometimes the slick surfaces may get sloppy out there. this morning might be a little easier than what this afternoon will sort of roll out with that wet weather. at the bay bridge toll plaza, looking live here you can see the metering lights are on. and it is a sluggish commute into san francisco. now here's the positive you know a lot of kids with the week off because spring break is here for some schools and some colleges. likely next week as well. so we're in a bit of a lighter traffic pattern that doesn't mean it isn't slow at the bay bridge. also as you head towards the dublin interchange. this is because of a crash. i'll have more on this coming
6:20 am
up in my next report. first right now speaking of roadways and getting around the bay area, law enforcement in san francisco have a new tool for fighting crime. and for the second year in a row, the sheriff's office is encouraging more women to join its ranks. >> lot to cover here this morning. we have sf sheriff paul miyamoto with us to talk about all that and more. good morning, always so glad to see you here. >> good morning. >> we have a ton of questions especially you know, probably things that people and our viewers would like to know herbal with license plate readers. i know city officials are moving forward with a plan to install 400 automated readers at 100 intersections across town. so once they're up, what's the expectations and then we've also heard a lot about speed cameras. kind of explain the difference what we can expect. >> two different types of cameras but both contribute to helping us in public safety with law enforcement and different things. for the license plate readers, those assist us in criminal investigations and searching for and locating people whether there's a suspect wanted with criminal arrest warrants be whether it's somebody that
6:21 am
we're investigating in terms of committing a crime that's ongoing, or infringe up on criminal investigations with local, state and regional authorities. also an ability for us to locate missing children and elderly adults, when we have amber alerts silver alerts. it's a tool that we can use in conjunction with other agencies to locate people. >> two different kinds of cameras. but both focused on public safety and street safety of course top of mind with the loss of the family in west portal crash. just horrible, horrible crash. >> yes. the speed cameras actually helped this as well because they record behavior. and the cameras record people that are speeding through intersections and not hitting red lights. those are the ones in which we are very concerned about. we're moving towards a vision zero goal. where we don't want any traffic fatalities on our streets. and those are two tools that will help us do that. especially in light of the fact that we have a shortage of staff in both the police and sheriff's offices. >> i speak to that because we have heard you on set talk a
6:22 am
lot about the desire to reute more women into the department into law enforcement. your office hosted its second annual women's leadership conference. what was the result of that? you have to be proud of so many women wanting to step up and serve. >> absolutely, this is women's history month. as part of that we have the ongoing conference and bring a lot of people together and we have a lot of leadership. we had sheriff -- corpus from san mateo. former sheriff vicky hennessy. they share experiences and stories and we bring people together so we can learn from those and move on. we have a very lofty goal of meeting 30% women in our department by 2030. right now we're at 13%. so we have long way to glow. what's encouraging is right now currently in the academy we have about 25% women and we are looking towards keeping the going to get to that goal. it's very important for everyone to feel that they're a part of something. regardsless of gender. regardless of any barriers. that are perceived or real. right now, i have an undersheriff and an assistant sheriff and both the second and
6:23 am
third in command that are both women and i actually promoted two more women as captains. not just in leadership but also in our staffing. >> good to hear and headed in the right direction. >> yes. >> least have funnel right now because march madness is happening. and we've been having a lot of fun with our brackets and going to talk about the men and women's black its. what are your picks? who's taking the championship home for the men and start with that. we actually have your brackets i think. >> we got fancy with you sheriff. >> we have brackets and what i'm hoping for is local success with the women. i'm always rooting for stanford. >> yes. >> we have a lot of challenges. i think the final four there is going to be both scs, south carolina and southern california. i'm also looking at iowa there. for the men's, for the men's, i'm very partial and you are going to see inpy picks, very partial kind of to retro. looking the duke to carry through and they have a task coming up with
6:24 am
houston. looking for north carolina. purdue. and i'm actually picking illinois in their bracket. >> okay. >> what's your thought process here? is it like roll the dice and see? i feel like you put some effort into picking your -- making your picks. >> he's a crime fighter. he gets scientific. forensic. >> we do very thorough investigations when we look into these things and every year it's very important. yes, very important. for our brackets but what's great about march madness is that it's never completely predictable. that there's always something that happens and we're looking forward to that and it's a nice break from all the other things that we deal with on a day-to-day basis. >> enyou watch the game when you enjoy the game. so do responsibly and call the uber and lyft or any other ride share app to not drink and drive. >> oh no. i appreciate that. >> i took your line. >> public safety is everybody's job. >> my kids are out there on the road and we know your families are on the roads as well. sheriff, we appreciate you as always and thank you so much. what did you have for breakfast this morning. >> i have some food in the car. [ laughter ] as soon as i'm off to my next thing. yes.
6:25 am
>> see. feel guilty. >> time to eat. >> coffee and sustenance. 6:24 right now. best to your family. be safe. somebody in california struck a small pot of gold in the mega millions draw but not the big prize. who won big and the california winner who hit small as we look to a big powerball draw. sheriff, he

okay. welcome back. you want the good news? or do you want the bad news? let's just get the bad news out of the way right? first, nobody won in california that big billion dollar mega millions. that went to somebody in new jersey. now there's the good news here. let's put our money on this. somebody in our state did win a million bucks, maybe a little bit more hitting some of the numbers. that winner comes from a ticket sold in a liquor store in van nuys, matching five of the six numbers. so drink up in van nuys. if you were in van nuys, or think maybe you won a smaller surprise, here's the numbers l that will either make you really happy this morning or want to line a bird cage with your ticket. 7, 11, 22, 29, 38, and 4 waves the megaball. there's still your chance to win the powerball jackpot worth estimated $865 million. nobody has won this one since new year's day. and if you are keeping track of the numbers there. that's 36 consecutive drawings without a winner. maybe pick 36 right? the next drawing for the powerball is tonight. fingers and toes crossed. maybe arms

6:32 am
for the bodies of six construction workers who plunged to their deaths when a cargo ship caused the bridge to fall into that icy river below. jarred hill in baltimore has more. >> reporter: in the shadow of the mangled metal that once was baltimore's francis scott key bridge, a community in mourning. >> amen. >> we appreciate each and every one of you for coming together with us. as we hold those families most importantly, in prayer. >> reporter: the crossing collapsed early tuesday when a cargo ship hit a support column. >> the whole bridge just fell down. start -- start -- whoever to everybody. the whole bridge just collapsed. >> reporter: the sound jolting neighbors out of their sleep. >> it felt just like an earthquake. >> reporter: the search for six missing workers was suspended as night fell. the water deemed too cold in the effort, too long for anyone to survive. >> i can't imagine how painful today has been for these families. >> reporter: sources tell cbs news multiple alarms sound on the ship after it lost power and propulsion. the pilot issued a mayday call, giving
6:33 am
law enforcement just enough time to stop anyone else from driving on the bridge. the national transportation safety board is leading the investigation into just what happened. and that includes examining any past safety problems with the ship. >> that is part of our investigation. where we look at, in-depth, at safety information and anything that may have occurred prior to this. >> reporter: several engineers say it doesn't appear the collapse was the result of infrastructure problems with the bridge. >> once the bridge was struck by a container ship of that size, there's not a bridge that we build, you know, that it's any level of economy and efficiency that is going to survive that. >> reporter: now the busy port of baltimore is closed to shipping until all the debris is removed from the water. >> we'll continue to update you on the baltimore bridge collapse on air and online at kpix.com and always on the free cbs news app. let's come home now looking live this morning on a
6:34 am
wednesday morning. and we see the beautiful bay bridge there. the sun coming up. and we are mindful we are a bridge dependent community. and so we continue to watch the story and all of its local questions that it raises this morning. but man, that sunrise there gives us lot of beautiful hope. it's nice to have hope mid-way through the week, paul. >> it is. and we're seeing a few peeks of the sunrise which makes me optimistic some areas may get even partly sunny skies for a short period of time today. i want to fast forward what you can expect later on. which are temperatures that for most of us are going to be running cooler than yesterday because we're going to see far less sunshine. that said san jose still make it to 67 degrees and redwood city. 63. oakland, this afternoon, 62 degrees. san francisco, 60. upper 50s for the north bay and the north bay as is often the case when you get a storm coming in from the north and west, most of our storms come from that direction. you get rain earliest and you get more cloud cover and you will see the temperatures and be the lowest today and you will be
6:35 am
about five degrees cooler than average. let's take a look at what's going on with our weather maps now. and these are your current temperatures and concord you are sitting at a cloudy 49 degrees and oakland, 52. livermore 47 and getting a few speaks of the sunrise and san francisco 52 and stop right there. now we got the sunshine. great shot. san francisco 52. san jose 45. and santa rosa currently 46 degrees. radar is clear right now in the bay area. you have got to go to far northern california even north yucaipa by about 30 miles so tee the rainfall right now. it's coming but it's not there yet. and it's one of two storms. if that was just storm number one. just be talking about rain today and scattered showers tomorrow. it's rain today and scattered showers tomorrow and then storm number two which brings an additional two days of rainfall coming up on friday and saturday. we'll break it all down for and you talk about when we will hit 70 degrees once again and that's coming up in a few minutes. right now let's talk about the roads with gianna. good
6:36 am
morning. >> let's talk about the roadways and bridges and getting people to work safely this morning. moving along slowly as you head towards the san mateo bridge. if you are commuting between 880 and 101 i think about getting on the roadways if you can. because it is starting to slow down on that south 880 connector heading over towards 92 and as you get to the peninsula, it's actually looking okay through there. bay bridge toll plaza, business as usual. no crashes. but certainly a few brake lights and issues as you head over into san francisco. but a little bit of a holiday traffic pattern due to the easter is this weekend and lot of kids on spring break. time now for a look at this morning's other top stories. new trance pansy in the superclose race for california's district 16 starting today. the san mateo county registrar of voters will allow campaign reps to see the votes for themselves. viewing digital copies of the ballots that were cast. now here's the look at the razor thin margin that continues to separate the
6:37 am
candidate dates. joe simitian leads evan low by just two votes. in the race to replace retiring congresswoman anna eshoe. oakland native in the running to be vice president of the united states. robert f. kennedy jr. has named nicole shanahan as his pick for vice president. >> joining us live right now sonoma state university political science professor david mccuin. we have a lot of questions and good morning. really about how the third party ticket could affect the election but just talk a little bit about robert f. kennedy jr. as a candidate. >> all right. if you think about rfk right? and environmental activist and lawyer and writer, this is someone who's always been a contrarian about politics so the run in utah only officially on ballot. but he has enough signatures in three other states and then his vice presidential candidate that he announces yesterday has a lot of resources that can help buoy him to get on additional
6:38 am
states. most of the states almost all of them are democratic states or states that democrats barely won in 2020. this is a guy who melds some elements of the democratic party. particularly with african american men. and someone who also melds parts of the trump base and the libertarian side of the republican party. so this third party run he wants to mimic this key states and particularly kind of rebuild some elements of what we saw, you know, 1992 with ross perot and 1980 with john anderson. just a hard way to go in american politics. >> we should note that major names in the kennedy family have said they will not support his run for the presidency. so you have to wonder what they think this morning in his vp pick. obviously?somebody from the bay area and let's talk about that pick and what the strategy is behind that selection. because we knew he had a few other big names in the running as well. >> right. i mean, you know he talked about jesse the body

move forward. >> yeah, gianna, what happens in states like georgia or michigan we've seen some votes that have happened in washington and michigan and georgia that have been kind of contrarian or difficult for democrats. so particularly on issues around with young people. around gaza and what's happening there with israel. and the biden team student loans, variety of different issues, that have been difficult to draw out their base and build up enthusiasm. this is exactly what kennedy wants to tap that. you then have donald trump in and out of courtrooms and go after that as well. they're trying to get voter segment and create the third party called we the people that can be out there and provide an alternative. if that happens, and those key states, donald trump is tapped out of about 46%, 47%. joe biden is going to have lower enthusiasm and he'll be down and that provides a place where a third party candidate like in 2000, like in 2016, can be consequential. can be a wrecking ball for democrats. and their attempt to get re-elected for joe biden. or to

- lift the clouds off of... - virtual weather, only on kpix and pix+. time now for a look at what's coming up later on "cbs mornings." a busy day in the country. tony dokoupil joining us live from baltimore county, maryland. that's of course the site of yesterday's bridge collapse. tony, the search for those six missing people as that truck whizzes by you this morning right there on the entry to what would be the bridge. that continues this morning no doubt it's a somber
6:45 am
scene. >> it is a somber scene. reed. the -- this road behind me is actually the road to nowhere here. it ends in the mangled and tangled mess that is the bridge. used to be a four lane bridge. one of biggest in the part of the country. now completely submerged in the port of baltimore. and the construction crew that was working in the middle of the bridge now missing for more than a day. and presumed dead unfortunately. the -- the ship that struck that pillar and knocked the bridge into the water is still there underneath of it all four lanes of the roadway on top of the nose of this thing. one of the things your viewers will not be able to really take in just based on the pictures alone is the scale of this ship. it would be like if you took the salesforce tower there in san francisco and lay it on its side. that's how long this thing is. and there's a mind-boggling amount of wheat so the one of the things confronting investigators here as the
6:46 am
divers look for the remains of the tragedy and the investigators look for the causes of this tragedy is the question of would anybody really have been able to stop a ship of this size at that hour of the morning and it does feel as someone who grew up in the area who knew that bridge who drove over it a lot has a kid. that boat is just too big and moving too quickly. >> you know, they said yesterday the governor of maryland, that seven, eight knots about 10, 12 miles per hour that that -- that was such a great visual the salesforce tower. hitting that. and you really have to also see this hero's story emerge, tony, they were able to call mayday and keep people off the bridge and avoid more casualties there. >> you know, reed, that's a great point. i mean, when a big thing happens like this, we look for big explanations and things to blame. but really this is a case where so far,
6:47 am
what we're learning is moely about things that went the way they were supposed to. there was local pilot on board that ship when they lost engine power. the pilot was able to signal mayday. police, first responders, were able to move very quickly. we're talking seconds remained when the final vehicles were going across the bridge before impact and the police were able to prevent additional vehicles from coming on board. and then there's actually radio chatter where you can hear them say we're going out now to get the construction crew after the impact and the bridge is in the water. it was too late. but there are heroes here amidst all this tragedy as well. and as mr. rodgers always said, when you have a moment like this, you are confronted by something like this, you look for the helpers and that's part of the story as well reed. >> also so important always to see you tony. never afraid to get off the set and get into communities. we appreciate you amplifying their stories this morning for us in a very bridge

6:50 am
>> when i very first started the app, i had just started kind of exploring my sexuality six months prior and i spent a lot of times in bars and nightclubs meeting people. bars and nightclubs aren't the best place to actually have a conversation. >> reporter: the apps available at the time for mostly for straight people. any options for the lgbtq community didn't seem to consider what users like robin were looking for. >> all truly built for gay men and just make it pink and go this is great. this will work for lesbians and it was like a completely different experience and completely different type of product. >> reporter: robyn created the app with the experience she had in mind. she says "her" is a sapphic dating app. sapphic is a term that includes queer women as well as nonbinary and transgender people. a key part of the user experience is offering more ways to be yourself, like providing pins that go beyond someone's sexual orientation or gender identity. it's one more way people can stand out and show their personality. which helps users to find others like them. >> i think now we really are like valued and appreciated for helping people express who they
6:51 am
really are and finding other people like them. >> reporter: "her" is an app led by a queer woman and run by a team mostly made up of lgbtq staff. robyn hopes the company is yet another example of why representation matters for her community, not only in tech, but also the corporate world in general. and while the app tries to be inclusive of all age groups, robyn sees the potential for a major shift in dating with gen z. a change to greatly benefit her with an increase in the number of people who identify as queer. >> we are a significant demographic that is growing hugely amongst younger people and so telling our stories and showcasing the value of this community and this audience as well as the businesses that operate too serve this community, is really impactful. >> reporter: one example of that impact that is already happening from the her app. robyn tells us they are being included in research of dating apps and so that is one more
