from cbs news bay area, this is the morning edition. this was harvey's chosen city. very important to him. to have this ship come to san francisco as a testament to his legacy . >> we are celebrating an historic visit in san francisco, the significance behind a navy ship named after civil rights trailblazer harvey milk, dock in the bay. we can expect to see more crime-fighting cameras in the east bay. the early morning announcement read by governor gavin newsom's office to combat crime.

a u.s. naval ship named after gay writes trailblazer harvey milk is dock in our waters. the late san francisco supervisor once called here home. we caught the moment the usns harvey milk crossed underneath the golden gate bridge as it arrived in the bay yesterday. it is 750 long and it is the first ship named after an openly gay person. it is also a second ship in the john lewis class of fleet. so much significance surrounding this trip. not only was milk a champion of lgbtq rights in california, he also served in the navy during the korean war. his career as an officer ended with an other than honorable discharge because he was gay. getting unable ship named after him is a true testament to the weight of his legacy. >> it is going to become a workhorse of the u.s. navy fleet, sailing around the world

to replenish u.s. warships at sea with both fuel and supplies. >> a pentagon reporters is the naming the ship harvey milk is more than just an honor for the gay rights leader , it also shows the changing of tides in america. we have a big day ahead here in the city before the ship leaves the port. the ship will be host to a special national vietnam war veterans day commemoration. our itay hod met up with one bay area veteran from vietnam to see why this moment is historic in more ways than one. >> as the saying goes, once a marine, always a marine. no one embodies that more than bill peacock. >> absolutely squared away. >> at 82, he moves a little slower but his need for perfection is as crisp as ever.

bill is one of a few good men who served in vietnam from 1968 to 1969 and one of the lucky ones that made it home. >> my basics class, 567, has one of the highest casualty rates of lieutenants in the entire war. >> unlike other wars, vietnam vets did not return home to tickertape parades or fanfare. in fact, it took until 1982 for national memorial to be commissioned and another 35 years before the government officially declared march 29 as vietnam veterans day. that is why, today, bill is straightening old medals as he attends his first-ever commemoration in the san francisco. >> it is great that the temperature recognizes what we have did however many years ago. >> although he hears it all the time, he would rather you not think him for his service.

when jesus was resurrected. back to our rain around here. jessica burch has a look at what we expect. >> it is a first alert weather day in the bay area. we can see gusty conditions. to add to that, we will be dealing with rainy conditions into the evening hours tonight. daytime highs deflect this system moving in from the north. we are topping up in the 50s heading into this afternoon near oakland, san francisco. half moon bay is a -- an example of some of the worst conditions. taking a quick look at what we are expecting this afternoon, futurecast shows light to moderate rain widespread throughout the bay area. we could even see some isolated thunderstorm activity sweeping and through our coastline into the afternoon hours today, closer to around 4:00, 5:00. that continues to move to the east. we have isolated showers overnight

tonight. the center of that area of low pressure sitting just off shore so it continues moving in from our saturday forecast and unluckily it moves to the south. by sunday, drier conditions just in time for easter. now for our top stories. this is live video from oakland where people can expect to see new crime-fighting cameras. this morning, governor newsom announced hundreds will be installed in the east bay. behind me is video from efforts earlier this year as the governor deployed chp officers on the streets of oakland. the chp has a new contract with a company called block safety. they installed 290 cameras on oakland city streets and 190 on state highways in the east bay. they are reportedly designed to help law enforcement see more details on suspect vehicles in real time instead of just their license plates. also in oakland, several major employers

carpooling $10 million to try to make downtown safer for their workers. kaiser, blue shield, clorox and pg&e say the money will beef up security around their offices. the funds will also cover the cost of on demand buddy exports, transit and parking. they say a spike in street robberies is their biggest source of concern. a few months ago, kaiser advised workers not to go out for lunch. a major cleanup operation continues this morning at the scene of that bridge collapse in baltimore. right now, a crane, set to be the largest on the east coast is moving closer to the disaster zone. it will be tasked with clearing up to 4000 tons of debris. in addition to that big crane, three heavy lift vessels are expected to arrive there later today. crews are trying to reopen a shipping channel that is important for both local and national economy. the bodies of two construction workers that are on the bridge when the cargo ships smashed into it on tuesday have been found. four more workers are missing and presumed dead. uniting to champion peace.

to face, having those conversations, building trust and creating a path forward. >> forward is the only direction they hope such efforts will take the world. >> also new york city, president joe biden and former president barack obama and bill clinton held a biden harris campaign fundraiser at radio city music hall last night. the three presidents also filmed a podcast episode. former president donald trump was also in new york. trump attended the wake of nypd officer jonathan diller on long island. the officer was fatally shot earlier this week during a traffic stop. it is a first alert weather day here in the bay area with active storms in the forecast. this is a part of an area of low pressure sitting just off shore and that system will track to the south heading into our weekend forecast. by easter sunday, drier conditions. if you are traveling down to southern california, you are traveling that storm impacting us. watching that storm develop, you could see some light to moderate rain,

widespread throughout the forecast this morning but it really starts to ramp up close to lunchtime. even with some chances of thunderstorm activity possible along our coastline, that storm continues to track to the east. we continue to watch drier conditions up into the northbay around 4:00 but it is still active down south, stretching into santa cruz and that moves off into the sacramento valley tonight. we see that rotation from the center of that area of low pressure sitting just off shore, bringing in more showers for us. luckily, that storm system continues to track to the south, drying us up just in time for easter sunday. with that storm, we are seeing gusty conditions. the winds sweeping in from the south. we will start to ramp up into this afternoon along the coastline. we can see wind speeds up to 30 or 40 miles per hour along our coast as that storm settles its way in. the national weather service has issued a wind advisory that will stay in

effect until tomorrow morning. let's take it a step back and talk about today a bit more. daytime highs today are a lot cooler compared to earlier this week. we are talking about low 50s in the san francisco. concord stretching off into antioch , all the way into the santa clara valley. a cool, wet day for us today with windy conditions lasting into the evening hours. as we take a look at the next seven days, easter sunday looks great. at least it is a little warmer by sunday and we continue to warm up into the 70s for monday and tuesday. upper 70s by tuesday and plenty of sunshine to linger around into mid-portions of next week.

both teams looking to make their way into the elite eight. if stanford gets the win, it would mark the third time the cardinal advances to the elite eight in the last four years. stanford has another standout student athlete who is making waves on campus. her name is emmy sharp. she is not only a stand out beach volleyball player but she is also a design enthusiast. recently, she designed a dress for stanford's fashionx runway show in her model was another standout stanford women's basketball player. these two ladies both share a love of the cardinal and also of passion. >> you are part of fashionx, which is a group at stanford. you are a budding designer. tell me about that. >> yeah. fashionx has been an amazing opportunity because it allows students at stanford to learn more about fashion in a way that regular courses you would not have been able to. i have gotten to work with kiki the last two years. it is

dolly parton's hit song jolene. she is getting a warm reception from some of the country grates. she says not everyone has been so supportive. before the album drop, beyoncé posted this on instagram, saying the album took more than five years to make saying it was born out of an experience she had where she did not feel welcome into the genre. some say that experience may be referencing her 2016 cma appearance alongside the chi genres. >> i think the idea that beyoncé should not be doing country music is the most on artist thing i have ever heard. as an artist, all you want to do is be able to create. the haters are going to hate. let the haters hate. i love what beyoncé is doing. >> her album is available on all platforms today. there has been a lot of buzz about this. i also heard there is an appearance by britney spears on that album. got to check
