university encampments were up overnight, the epicenter of a wave of campus protests. similar scenes across the country from reno to ucla and stanford with many calling universities to divest from doing business with israel. many jewish students say they are facing antisemitism. >> as a member of the jewish people, i feel my people being attacked. protesters clashed with police at ohio state, three people were arrested late this week. friday evening protesters at cal poly took down the barricades at the administrative building. inside there was graffiti covered walls and shattered glass leading to the president's office. messages scrawled around the inner office. the

standoff continues. >> reporter: usc is canceling the main graduation ceremony. the ceremonies that took place on this lawn are set for mid-may. >> many of the college seniors graduating didn't have traditional ceremonies four years ago because they were canceled due to the pandemic. today's weather will almost be a copy of yesterday. plenty of fog but it will break through to sunshine with temperatures near or slightly above average. then an area of high pressure, a hill of area of high pressure in the atmosphere suppresses the marine layer and allows temperatures to warm up. today is not bad at all. temperatures on the coast topping out in the upper 50s and low 60s. mid- to upper-60s and a few low 70s around the bay. mostly

mid-to-upper 70s with the warmest spots around 80 degrees. it's no secret that san francisco sometimes gets a bad rap for drug issues and crime. the latest issues, thieves stealing congressman adam schiff's luggage from a parking lot in downtown. despite perception, there has been improvement. overall crime is down 30% from the same time last year. as we have been reporting for a while, the city has been aggressively cracking down with license plate readers, a bait car program and arresting drug dealers in the tenderloin. the city is pumping more money into a young adult court, a program focused on getting repeat offenders on the right track. among the success stories is lucas. kenny choi has more on his journey to redemption.

>> reporter: for years lucas cruise struggled with an addiction to meth. since 16 years old, in and out of jail committing crimes including auto and residential burglary. >> it was an exhausting cycle. >> reporter: the now 25-year-old entered various residential programs six times failing to become sober. >> i want to be stable but i wanted to use. >> reporter: it wasn't long ago he was given a chance to enter young adult court instead of being tried as an adult. >> i was scared to go back to jail for a more serious crime given i had something serious on my record. >> superior court judge bruce chen overseas the 18 to 24 year olds. participates like him undergo mandatory programs. failure to meet it results in getting sent back to custody.

>> if we took an approach you get one chance of treatment, two chances or three, he wouldn't be where he is today. >> the city is racking up funding from 800,000 a year to 1.3 million annually the next five years. they will provide forecast managers, clinicians and counselors, something that the district attorney brook jenkins and raju support. >> the data is good that a lot of the people avoid rearrest and are able to move their life in a positive trajectory and that helps their families to keep all of us safer. >> we want to make sure that this is something that is sustainable because it represents true reform in the system. >> so far the data shows the number of drug overdose deaths in san francisco is at a similar pace to the record 810 deaths last year. in 2017, 222 deaths.

>> what i'm observing at looking at, not even three, four years ago. it was a different atmosphere. >> reporter: these days he works at a city funding treatment program in the tenderloin. >> i tell them don't be the one told to work hard. >> reporter: it took him four years to graduate from young adult court with the judge sending him back to jail at least five times. the path to redemption continues. >> lucas story shows there is reason for hope. hope is not just hoping things will work out better or always expecting things to go smoothly. it's knowing that this is the right thing to do. >> it can be hard sometimes. there is a really, really soft silver lining to where it becomes really fun. >> lucas has been clean and sober more than three years now. the fun part of life is just beginning.

>> the idea of a youth adult court is based in neuroscience. the brains of 18 to 24 year olds are not fully matured yet. since the inception in 2015, 173 graduates have gone through the court. both district attorney jenkins and raju support a permanent implementation of the program. across the bay, a barbecue joint gained a reputation. from times to the michelin guide is getting back on its feet. matt horn put his flair into brisket but then it came to a grinding halt in november when it burned to the ground. on friday a lot of people lined up for horn's big comeback. they started fresh in an area that needed a big boost. wilson walker was there. >> i love you. i will see you again soon, all right. precious cargo.

more homier. >> san francisco has farmer's markets and things of that nature but it's business like. everything is so rushy rushy, hurry, hurry. >> reporter: oakland's core faces the challenges. like san francisco the office vacancy rate is high. the amount of space is much smaller and over recent decades, oakland placed a significant amount of housing downtown. another possible explanation for the reported increase in activity here. >> then they build up downtown. that made it better to me personally to me. >> more people here. >> yeah. it's smooth to me. >> yeah, man, we brought our michelin plaques. the other ones we weren't able to recover.

welcome back. the bay area is prepping for what should be a beautiful day and great weather. that is not the case across the country. people in eastern nebraska are picking up the pieces after tornadoes damaged hundreds of homes and buildings on friday. this is a look at the corned right there. some were rescued from collapsed buildings. the most destructive storm moved from a rural area into subdivisions northwest of omaha. another tornado hit the western edge of omaha passing through the airport. there are

various reports of injuries including three workers at an industrial plant outside of lincoln. the building collapsed with about 70 people inside friday afternoon. all were safely evacuated. no deaths will be reported at this time. quite a bit of fog and low cloud cover. plenty of sunshine this afternoon. close to normal temperatures, slightly above average today, then a warmer trend tomorrow and monday. cooler weather returns by tuesday and wednesday and a chance of showers by thursday into friday. heading to the giants game, a matinee against the arizona diamondbacks. temperatures in the low 60s. warming up for the sunday afternoon game. the high temperatures for the rest of

the bay area this afternoon, we will reach up to where we were yesterday. temperatures in the mid-to upper-70s in the santa clara valley. some of the warmest spots around antijock close to 80. low 70s fremont. upper 50s on the coast in half moon bay. mid of upper 50s and 60s there. mid- to upper-60s in san francisco and oakland. close to where we are supposed to be. mostly low 70s in the north bay. warmest spots higher. the fog is more persistent slowing down how numbers warm up. temperatures are three to four above average. we will be farther above average for highs tomorrow and monday. we look at the 10-day temperature outlook for san jose, a spike in temperatures the next couple of days. a big drop tuesday and wednesday. more of a drop thursday and friday. that is associated with the next rain chance that won't be a significant rain chance. but this time of year that is what we expect. a few hundreds of an inch of rain thursday into friday. it's a long way down the line. the seven-day

forecast, inland parts of the bay area, we have a few warm days then that drops back to near normal temperatures tuesday and wednesday then slightly below temperatures thursday and friday as the next rain chance moves in. we don't phrase it anything more than a chance of showers, typical for late april. around the bay, temperatures go up and down but not as much as inland. everybody settles into the below average temperature pattern by next week and continuing through the end of the last fuel week of april. ups and downs more subtle. it will be cool. coastal drizzle will be possible before the chance of showers arrives thursday into friday. coming up some diehard a's fans are still holding out hope that the a's will stay in oakland. this weekend they are taking the fight to sacramento. plus --

>> protesters call for the university to cut ties with companies that do business with israel. in a statement sent to us, stanford says the students' actions are in violation of student policy. the names of students involved have been submitted. the student conduct process has begun. at u.c. berkeley they are calling for a cease-fire and universities to divest from israel's war efforts. elsewhere, cal pollyann nounsed its campus will be closed and closes moved online for the remainder of the school year. this case afternoon protesters clashed with police and demonstrators occupied buildings on campus. protests led to clashes like this one from police. that was the case on thursday at emery in

oakland police officer jordan wingate. he died from injuries suffered in a crash. officers stood in attention and saluted as his coffin was lead in. he was involved in a crash responding to a call in 2018. the same year he was named rookie of the year by the police officer's association. he was born in walnut creek and became an oakland police cadet as a teenager. speakers praised wingate for touching so many people in his career that was cut short. >> a young dedicated and fearless guardian of peace and justice that made our community a better place during his brief but incredibly impactful career. officer wingate's life, service and ultimate sacrifice

will be remembered forever. >> jordan wingate's death is months after another oakland police officer was killed in the line of duty. pacifica police are asking the public to find a suspected arsonist connected to a fire at fairway park. a witness saw this man start a fire before running away. that witness was able to snap the photo. investigators say the suspect visits the archery range regularly. if you have any information to help the investigation, you are asked to contact the pacifica police department. in the latest sign of home insurance crisis, the state's so-called insurer of last resort seems ready to raise rates again. it's called the fair plan. it is an insurer to provide a policy to those dropped by traditional services. as wildfire risks increase, the customer base is rapidly growing. now fair plan president victoria roach told a

a beautiful look at the golden gate bridge. if you go west of the bridge into the ocean, people are working to find solutions to a problem in the water. crab fishermen are reeling new technology may put crabbers back in business. the most recent season it was cut short due to an unexpected influence of humpback whales on california's coast. the wildlife departments didn't want to risk fishing gear on the whales. now they are testing the crab traps to help them coexist in the water. the testing is in the early stages and scientist can't move ahead with tests until late spring or early summer but it's some progress there. birds play a critical role in the environment. in the past 507 years, nearly 30% of the birds in north america, 3 billion have vanished due to habitat loss, pollution and

climate change. in project earth report, a cutting edge technology in the bay area is helping scientists work together to better understand ways to help the birds. here is len ramirez. >> reporter: the wild birds come here at the southern edge of the bay area surrounded by urban sprawl. native and migratory birds found a safe haven on a tiny strip of forest. >> this is a little island of national habitat for everything that lives here. specifically we watched the birds. >> reporter: katie is with the bay bird observatory. over the past 40 years, volunteers with the nonprofit have studied birds at the coyote creek station. they have seen a worrisome decline in some species. with the climate change, the species are

impacted often in a negative way. >> reporter: to shed light on the issue, katie and her team collect data using a traditional research method known as banding. >> a big personality. >> the birds are gently caught, feathers inspected by softly blowing on the bird, researchers can check for fat and signs of molting. >> it rolls, goes up and down. >> reporter: a lightweight band is fitted around the leg. the bird is released. if the bird is caught again, the idea allows scientists to keep track of its movement, but -- >> you recapture a low percentage of the birds you band. you have to band a lot of birds to have any turn up at another station. >> reporter: now a game changing technology is blowing researchers away. >> we haven't been able to see this data before. >> reporter: the system is

called motis. it uses radio transmitters to track wildlife as it travels vast distances across the globe revealing incredible new details. >> we had detection of meadowlarks in the valley, northern part of the valley tagged in montana. >> reporter: levi head's up the program for the california department of fish and wildlife. so far california has more than 50 stations with antennas placed from the oregon border to the salted and sea. this is on grizzly island and run by levi's group. >> one station per property is all that is required anything moving by or using the property. >> reporter: researchers attach tiny tracking tags to small birds, bats and butterflies and bees. when the wildlife flies by a tower, the tag emits a unique radio signal that gets picked up by the antenna. >> see the red flashing lights? >> reporter: the signal goes to the cloud and ends up in a

invisible. >> like walking through a mine field, stepping over them and not seeing them. that irked me. >> reporter: an idea in his head, why not serve those in need right now. >> i said do you need someone to cut hair? >> they said we need someone so badly. >> reporter: jump ahead to 2021, joseph began tent city barbers that gives free haircuts to people living with homelessness in the bay area. our motto is beauty will save the world which is a line from a novel. >> reporter: joseph's redwood city nonprofit mirrors his heart for giving. he spent 15 years running stanford's digital language lab but wanted a change. he became a cosmetologist and crowd funded for equipment. he offers a safe space for sheer comfort and care.

>> i have clients that cut their hair then the next week i'm told that they overdosed or passed away. i take this seriously. it may be the last haircut the person ever gets. >> reporter: so far tent city barbers provided about 1500 haircuts joseph is not working as a high school substitute teacher, he transports his mobile salons to nonprofits. he is at martha's kitchen in san jose. people line up for a free hot meal and laundry services. >> he is compassionate. . >> reporter: anthony leon is grateful joseph trimmed his beard. >> gave me motivation. inspires me. >> reporter: joseph said he gives his best so people can look their best. often they leave with a smile. and also a style that is a cut above the rest. >> thank you.

from something lost to a chance to strike gold, 11 rare and valuable coins were scattered throughout san francisco for a scavenger hunt on friday. the most expensive $2,500 each. the coin collector says this is a fun way to teach people about the city's rich history. >> reporter: as couples are posing and photographers capturing, treasure hunters are searching at the iconic palace of fine arts. about a dozen people looking at every possible hiding spot under the dome for a valuable coin. here is a clip posted by the organizer. she happened to be visiting and had no clue about the scavenger hunt until they found a father and son team

searching. he was looking for something. we thought he lost something. we are looking for a gold coin. we started looking. >> reporter: a coin collector came up with the national scavenger hunt during national coin week. >> i got together 11 coins. total value $10,000. they range from $250. to $2,500. we hid them in 11 different neighborhoods throughout san francisco. >> five gold coins, five sell adviser coins and one copper. the copper penny and gold coin worth 2500 bucks each. >> all the coins are made here in san francisco. people don't realize that san francisco, we are the king of mints. we have three different. first 1854, second 187-and the current one has been making coins since 1938. >> they put up 11 pictures as clues on the instagram page at 12:00 noon open to the public

famous u.s. coin design. >> these are called eagles. this is a single eagle. there is a $20 coin a double eagle. >> reporter: the value of the coin, $1,100. she says it more than covers her trip. >> i am at a loss for words. this is 1100 that i wasn't expecting to get today. . they offered her $1,100 cash on the spot to buy back the coin. she said, no, she will keep the coin for a while. >> so, in case you are wondering, there is one coin out there. it hasn't been found yet. the details are on the whiter coin instagram page. if you miss out, organizers plan to do another hunt. they will announce the date on social media.
