bridge. 37 to the tolls. 22 minute ride. all right. james, back to you. thank you. reyna 701. and in and out is out of oakland. yeah. they are closed for good first time. in fact, the burger chain is set to shut down one of its locations. >> because of crime kron four's michael thomas is in the newsroom with the details. michael? yeah, good morning, everyone. that's right. it is the first location to ever close. and corporate officials say it actually brought in tons of business sits right next to oakland airport. as we know many times people want to land here in cali and get that kelly based burger. >> but that's no longer an option because of oakland's crime rate, at least in that area. now, the chain's corporate office says this was a tough decision and came as it continue to deal with constant car break-ins, property damaged in armed robberies along oakland's parents pay can burger excuse me corridor adding that the issues created unsafe work environments for both customers and employees. yesterday was the last day a double double was made right there in the city of oakland.

to not go to work for the next 2 days to do it. this is at seton medical center. so if you have an appointment you might want to call ahead. despite having replacement workers come inside, let's face it any time there's such a chaos like this, it could cut. could create disruptions. you might want to call ahead because your schedule could be pushed back or rearranged or even canceled for the next 2 days. this is not an indefinite strike. they want to send a message to their bosses that they have demands that so far have not been that which is why they are not at the bargaining table but will be on the picket lines starting at 7.30, this morning. so a little less than 25 minutes from now or so. take a look at your screen. well, this place was on the brink of bankruptcy more than 4 years ago into a new company came in and saved it from going out of business altogether. they are disheartened by the lack of progress when it comes to negotiations and they don't

like them taking to the picket lines and they point to many things, including a 16% pay raisecof the last 3 years or so. and then free medical benefits for their employee and immediate family members. not to mention that they claim that the top 5% of their employees make an average of $181,000 every year. they also sent out this statement to us in the overnight hours. this is their position on what's going on. so let's face it. they are staring at each other. but this is still talking to the public. they say they excuse me. we have been working diligently to ensure northern san mateo county. as a community hospital for years to come to provide high-quality, affordable care. that means that that meets the needs of our community. we are committed to resolving any outstanding issues through constructive dialogue and negotiations. no word yet on when they will be back at the bargaining table. and again, this is not an indefinite

strike where we have seen people stay off for days, weeks and even months until they reach an agreement. in this case, it is 2 days and it begins in about 25 minutes from now. back to you, thank you very much. well, >> it's 706. and in san francisco, another car hit a bus stop, injuring someone. this time was near golden gate park. it was just one person who was injured. but this comes in. here it is. that's the recent crash happened after remember last week when a whole family of 4 was struck and killed while they were waiting for a bus to go to the zoo. now people who live in the inner richmond neighborhood in san francisco are concerned about their safety. this crash that you see here happened saturday afternoon around 05:00pm on fulton street at par presidio. one man went to the hospital. he had head injuries. and as you could see, that car hit a metal pole. >> right in front of the bus stop and thank god because people say, you know what, if they didn't hit the metal

pole, more people were in that bus shelter and could have been it injured, killed the driver at the scene. stay they have multiple violations they face now and the community is demanding the city do more to protect pedestrians. connie chan represents the district where this latest bus crash happen and arrest the bus crash stop happened and she says she's urging the mayor and the san francisco mta to speed up safety improvements, including to speed cameras on fulton street. but somebody who is challenging chan for her seat as supervisor says that she thinks actually physical barriers would help protect people more. absolutely unacceptable. >> there's not enough that we can be doing in terms of policy in design change i were in charge would be putting in bollards tonight. unfortunately, that's not happening. we need better traffic enforcement in our streets need to be designed to keep kids to keep people safe.

otherwise this is just going to keep happening. >> the sfmta is doing a study right now on speed along fulton corridor. the thing that will be done by june, the organization, richmond family sf is advocating for changing the speed limit on fulton street, lowering it from 30 miles an hour down to 25. >> 2 people were shot and killed over the weekend inside of a house in san francisco's portola neighborhood. 9-1-1 call sent police to the area of dwight street and san bruno avenue at about 8.45 sunday night. that's where officers found 2 adults dead at the scene. homicide detectives have taken over the case. no arrests have been made just yet. we'll keep you updated. >> it's 7, and we have new details about united airlines flight that was delayed for 17 hours. it was supposed to take off friday heading from sfo to aspen skywest, which upper. it's operated by united operated by skywest. and they say this delay was with the plane's brakes. and that's why

and skywest says once they were sure that the system was working, then they sent that flight to aspen after a long delay, though. and listen to this. after they got to ask than they had to sit on the runway because it was so crowded there. they couldn't actually get. also, passengers had to wait a little bit longer. >> well, 709, is the time. and new this morning, boeing ceo dave calhoun is stepping down at the end of the year. the commercial plane maker is under pressure from major airlines that want to know how the company plans to fix problems with its manufacturing process. the company builds planes like the alaska air lines flight that 7.37. max that had a door plug fly off earlier this year. mid flight boeing has come under intense scrutiny from the faa recently as it's conducting an audit of assembly lines at a boeing factory. fact, investigators say bolts that help kept that door plug panel in place were missing after an underwent repair work at that. boeing factory. >> it's 7.10. and tonight, part of the richmond, san help

bridge is going to be closed for repairs. caltrans is going to start to work at 07:00pm. so they'll be closing the too far left lanes. westbound 5.80, overnight. they're going make some repairs to the upper deck. they're going to move traffic over to the right hand shoulder, which means that you won't have access to pedestrians, bicycles overnight, though, both lanes will reopen tomorrow morning at 05:00am. and then also you need to expect some delays probably on the lower deck, too, because they're doing some painting down there. >> well, happening today, the city of richmond is launching its first-ever best of richmond program to highlight local businesses. residents can nominate and vote for their favorite business online in more than 100 categories, including best tacos, best hair salon. and best cannabis dispensaries. you can also vote for ton-commercial areas like best place to picnic or best place to walk a dog. businesses can participate at no cost. residents can vote all month long on the city's website. >> it's 7.11 and still ahead on the kron 4 morning news,

apparently reluctant to take a sick day. a new survey from the university of michigan found that sick children are worried about being absent and it negatively affecting their grades about two-thirds of parents say this impacts their decision whether to keep them home or not. about a quarter of parents say they'll send their students to school. and even if they're sick and hope for the best. and that's that's how things spread ya. >> as state lawmakers determine how to address california's projected multi-billion dollar deficit. they say tax revenue might be able to help close that gap. well, february is tax revenue did come in hundreds of millions dollars above what was expected data from the department of finance shows year-to-date revenues are still trending down. the non-partisan legislative analyst's office says that even with these revenues, the state will face a projected deficit of what it expects to be. 73 billion dollars. and that's still much higher than what the newsom administration has been projecting, which was right around. 38 billion

dollars. legislative leaders say there is a lot of work to be done. >> even though february's tax regimes you see the administration is as teammates. we know the revenues generally coming in lower than the forecast and that's concerning. and so we are prepared for some very difficult choices that. >> now democratic leaders in the senate and assembly announced an early action plan which they say will shrink the deficit by about 12, 18 billion dollars on the other hand, gop lawmakers say that more spending may not be the key to better results. they say they want to make cuts to several programs in step. >> especially when we talk about homelessness is that we we reward only those areas that are proven to get results. a lot of the programs are questionable. and those are the ones that should be the targeted for our consideration for what they call delays or cuts. and so let's go with what we know. works. >> where the legislature will be in recess this week, but they are expected to vote on a

junior is coming to the bay area tomorrow. he'll be announcing his choice for vice president in oakland. rfk junior is reportedly planning to name bay area native nicole shanahan as his running mate. shanahan is a california attorney and entrepreneur previously married to google co-founder sergey brin. they are. she grew up in oakland and graduated from santa clara university school of law. rfk junior was reportedly considering former minnesota governor jesse ventura and new york jets quarterback aaron rodgers as well as potential running mates. final numbers show that just about 47% of san francisco voters have cast ballots in the march 5th primary election. that's the lowest level for a primary since 2012, little more than 233,000 ballots were cast. the city has more than 500,000 registered voters. almost 90% of ballots this year. vote by mail. back in 2012 presidential primary voter turnout was just over 30%.

your bridges. 60 min te into the city right now. just went down from 18 minutes. san mateo bridge about 22 minutes. so those low 80's are getting on the bridge. keep that in mind. our richard summerfield about 13 minutes. we're tracking an accident. pablo long ad that just cleared. but residual delays so crockett outdoors may is going to get a little bit of time. 30 minute ride. 37 to the tolls across the golden gate bridge stories back to you. thank you. reyna 7.30, in the south bay, san jose mayor matt mahan has appointed a new interim police chief. he has crawford's michael thomas in the newsroom with more on who it is. good morning, michael. hi, good morning, everyone. >> the new interim police chief serving san jose will be a paul joseph. he's currently second in command there at the serving as interim isn't out of the ordinary. and he's going to take over next week. assistant police chief paul just of has spent the last 30 years there at the san jose police department. he joined back in 1994. that was after working 2 and a half years with san mateo police back in 2021, he was appointed

assistant police chief and has supported current police chief anthony mata ever since both men have pushed for more transparency and community engagement in the department. and san jose mayor matt mahan says that joseph is a very capable leader and believes he can step into this interim role seamlessly. the search continues for a candidate. take a listen to what the mayor had to say when we caught up with him. >> we're very fortunate to have someone with interim chief shows u.s. history and experience and help provide stability and continuity being chief mata as assistant chief for the last 3 years has. so we put them in the in the position to build off of that consistency. then the search just it takes time. you want community input. we have an outside search firm helping us to source candidates. we're doing a lot of community engagement. it's a minimum six-month process. >> current police chief mata announced he was leaving the department back in january saying he would be embarking on a new role with the santa

clara county district attorney's office. now mayor matt mahan says he leaves behind a solid foundation for both interim chief joseph and eventually the next permanent police chief says we get more on who that permanent police chief could be or if there's a list of top candidates will keep you updated. but as you heard from the mayor, it could take up to 6 months. that's a very latest in the newsroom. i'm michael thomas story. james, we'll send it back to you. okay, michael, thank you very much. it's 7.32 and a big story that we're following in the east bay as the oakland police chief. >> they finally have a new police chief. it's been about a year. yeah. mayor sheng thao named floyd mitchell as the city's. >> new chief of police. most people here in the bay area know very little about him other than the fact it was the police chief in lubbock, texas. that's really neat is that we get an insight of kron four's dan kerman, talk to somebody about his track record. for some oaklanders. it was last month's police commission candidates forum when they first got a look at oaklands new police chief floyd mitchell. i believe it's

going to be a very challenging. >> opportunity for a police chief to come in and work with not only the members inside the department. >> community members and multiple governing authorities to work to move the the local police department forward. >> mitchell began his career with the kansas city, missouri police department after 25 years there, he became police chief in temple, texas population. 82,000 in 2019, he became police chief for the city of lubbock, texas, population 257,001 thing that you consider probably the biggest accomplishment of his time here was the search allies in the police force. >> and that really helped his goal of community policing. >> that still is the evening anchor at our nexstar affiliate, lubbock, texas. he says mitchell was behind creating police substations in 3 different parts of the city. one of the things chief michel focused on was really touting the cart of safety by having the police department.

>> closer to your home, this is going to be a safer community for everyone and a pretty much open to a policy. >> for folks to come in talk with him about issues that they may and that opens when he when you have open policy like that, it makes everybody feel like they are part of the change that happens within the community. reggie dial heads up the organization 100 black men of west texas. >> he says mitchell gained a lot of respect by joining with his organization following the murder of george floyd to lead a solidarity march in the city. we had. >> over got maybe 200 folks. now they're in a solidarity march to make sure that the city of little understands that is a partnership between the community in the police department. we have to work together is that he was a big piece of that, a major piece of that. and while those we spoke with said mitchell worked hard to establish relationships with the community. >> the same cannot be said for the news media. we would have,

you know, unfortunate shootings and incidents that would happen you would expect tillis hear from the chief on them. he didn't really hear from him at all during the end of his tenure in lubbock, mitchell took a lot of heat for 9-1-1. calls going unanswered. but insiders say mitchell also didn't fare well when it came to officer morale. there was a internal review, but of the police department that was conducted by chief michel and conducted by the department to see out. one within the department. and so from what i've been told from sources from within department of told that when it came to raul and how officer stopped mitchell was doing, it was pretty. >> fifty-fifty the city of lubbock and chief michel parted ways in september of last year. >> that was dan kerman reporting for us this morning. we did reach out to chief michel for a one-on-one interview. we're still waiting to hear back. we know that he is expected to meet with the community and the media in oakland sometime this week. and we have heard from the local chapter of the naacp.
