we honor the life of reverend cecil williams. as we take a look at a celebration of life. >> from the area's local news station. you're watching the kron. 4 morning far. >> good morning, everyone. and thank you for joining us here on the kron. 4 morning news. it's monday. may 13th. i'm michael thomas. let's start a look at the weather as you can see behind me, the sun's not up quite yet, but john, trouble over in the weather department. i'm sure you've got more details on that. good morning, john. you still dark for sure. we are looking at in the aurora this morning either. so that's something that is kind of a return to normal. >> we're going to see some normal looking skies the next few days. and that does involve and the 2 bit cloud cover. this is your fog that is pushed right back into the bay area this morning. we definitely have quite the do some marine layer that has made its return to us and us. we do have some low visibility spots, including san francisco, novato santa rosa. napa, even out towards the tri valley. a little bit of low visibility. so do make sure

that you are keeping your eyes on the road as you're getting into the work this morning could be running into some stubborn fog. not even just early this morning, all the way up until late morning hours on shore breeze. back with us. this is keeping that ocean cool. they're pumped right into the bay. and that's temperatures are not going to be near as warm as they had been on some of our hotter days. daytime highs today are going to be in the 40's, rather. our current temperatures 40's to low 50's your daytime highs will reach some pretty seasonable numbers. some low 80's for inland areas. 70's along the bay shore and 60's out towards the coastline and nice seasonable and mostly sunny day. once this fog burns off, i'll be talking more about any sort of changes that you can expect in your forecast. still to come, as for your roads right now, it's a pretty sailing monday morning. we aren't seeing any sort of backups on the bay bridge. 7 minutes to make your crossing there in the metering lights have yet to be turned on san mateo bridge at 12 minutes. nothing slowing you down. you're rolling at the limit at

the richmond, sandra fell. but you are dealing with a little bit of fog on some spans like the golden gate, which will be back up. hopefully momentarily. michael. sean, over in the east bay, a family is mourning the loss of a 5 year-old boy that drowned over the weekend. it happened in the back of the home on bethel island. >> neighbors say the boy was visiting family when the tragedy occurred. a kron four's check moment. he's got details. >> contra costa county first responders rushed to bethel island. reports of a 5 year-old drowned in bethel island. we had a young male drowned. >> landing over there. john sullivan, a neighbor says each of these homes has a dock news hitting close to his home. he says this tragedy was praying for you know, it didn't work out you're the rescuers did the best they could. neighbors tell us the boy was visiting relatives in the complex and fell off the dock in the back of the home. so neighbors say a drowning is really uncommon. some of them have been living here for years and say they've never seen anything like it.

>> but they also said at the same time, water safety is at the top of mind spreading life vests and words of advice for people who have boats just like this one. i'm very sad about it. hearing about it that that breaks my heart. darlene weaver has lived here for 3 years and says she's never heard of a drowning in this community until now. i'm not blaming the pairing, you shows. just don't it's so quickly, right? so accidents happen. that's why they're this he is so important. weaver says her family are all experienced swimmers but make sure they all wear life vests. you know, we're in the get down to it without investment has more. boaters are expected in the months to come. >> weaver says water safety to her. person, you know, the delta. it's serious, you know, is that current that under current, we've had lots of friends that are not lots but several friends. >> that have succumb. so we don't we won't get out there without a vest.

>> on bethel island, moment. kron 4 news. >> and over in placer county, a woman drowned after an attempted water rescue. it happened early sunday afternoon in the american river. according to state parks and recreation's, authorities were able to find the woman. but unfortunately she did die from her injuries. as of now, no details have been given on how she got into the water. officials say the case is still under investigation. the body of a mother who went missing days ago has now been recovered in the san joaquin river. now it's tennis. last county officials with the deputy's office say they responded to calls on thursday about several people drowned ing and the san joaquin river near fisherman's bend officials say 30 year-old brenda durand jumped into the water to save her 11 year-old daughter. the daughter was able to get out safely, but unfortunately, iran did die and not resurface. on saturday. volunteers reached our search, the area for duran and recovered her body just outside of the town of newman and wake of this tragedy.

sheriff's office is reminding people to always wear a life jacket when getting into the river. well, happening today, oakland's new top cop will be addressing the city at its annual event. impact 5.10, town tourism day. >> floyd mitchell started his role as police chief on saturday with an official swearing-in ceremony that's set to take place later this week. mitchell is opd is 14 to chief in the last decade. hundreds of people gathered in san francisco this weekend to celebrate the life of reverend cecil williams. now, reverend williams was known for his work as a civil rights and lgbtq activists. he died last month at the age of 94. he co-founded glide with his late wife and devoted his life to activism. kron four's. sara stinson was there and she's got details. >> 800 people packed into the sanctuary at glide memorial church in san francisco sunday

to honor the life of reverend cecil williams looked around at all the people here, the overflow of people in the sanctuary. this is 11 feet right the he passed away on april 22nd in his home. his daughter kimberly shared what he was like in his final hours. i want everyone to know she was radiant and full of and like that day for more than 60 years, the reverend fought for civil rights and champion of the lgbtq+ community. whether that the people living on the street or notable politicians like congresswoman barbara lee. >> sat right over there in 3rd probably the 3rd sing and every sunday. reverend williams helped me through some very challenging, very challenging personal times as well as former san francisco mayor willie brown, vice president kamala harris and political activists, professor angela davis

>> those who under until lgbt community. political activists like myself, williams first came to san francisco's tenderloin neighborhood in 1963. to help run glide, church and glide foundation. quickly after he made the brave decision to make the church inclusive to all. >> when he stood up for folks in the lgbtq community to get rid of the stigma. and this city that did not embrace this community williams and his late wife, janice america, tony, expanded glide to become what it is today. a safe haven providing food and services to thousands of people a year that the crack epidemic israel and the streets. >> you know, engaging the public 6 no ha ve he never shied away from those new issue he wasn't going to

>> the celebration of life for williams was filled with music, love, laughter and tears. he put people on my past. >> to show me the way. i have to be on the streets. that was a product of my environment. >> san francisco mayor london breed recalled growing up in the city and being able to lean on the reverend. >> and to see him and to look. as this giant of a person with such courage. with such fight with such strength, hope come fall. >> singer >> michael front e tribute id williams by singing his new song. he described a time 30 years ago when he was in line for food at clyde with his baby son. >> i felt like man, this is what this a place anybody can come. >> williams's daughter wanted all to know her father's legacy will live on.

>> he remains a living manifestation and a symbol of unconditional love, acceptance, forgiveness, compassion. he's recovering revolution against injustice and oppression. >> i'm sara stinson reporting kron. 4 >> over the weekend, san francisco firefighters worked to put out flames at a hotel in the russian hill neighborhood. it happened at the broadway hotel on polk street early sunday morning. the fire forced residents to evacuate the building. and crews say several streets were shut down at the time they've been reopened. firefighters were able to quickly put out the flames. however, one person suffered minor injuries. no word yet on the cause of the actual fire. over in the east bay, a lithium battery. it causes a fire at the port of oakland. video from the citizen app shows a large cloud of smoke hovering over the san francisco bay yesterday afternoon crews were able to get the fire under

control. the cause is still, however, under investigation. happening today, california state parks and cal fire will begin prescribed burns at mount diablo state park. they'll be active in the mitchell canyon area until june 7th. the state parks a prescribed burns depend on the weather and air conditions. well, still ahead on the kron, 4 morning news, uc berkeley's graduation is met with pro-palestinian protesters on campus. >> plus, we hear from him. he's a restaurant owner who is struggling to stay on flood, followed by multiple break-ins. and there's a new park in san francisco. we've got the details and a look at what you may see if you

welcome back. the time is 5.13, here for things you need to know. a new video is emerging from a disturbing incident where gunshots were fired at teenagers from the east bay. it happened during a rowing race in west sacramento. someone fired at least 3 shots that landed near the kids. no one was hurt. as for a motive for west sacramento, police say they're still investigating. plus in the north, a newly installed flock cameras in sandra fell helped police track down a stolen vehicle. police say the van was stolen from the novato area and spotted in the early morning hours. the suspected thief was later arrested and found with a revolver in their possession. that driver has been booked in us now in marin county jail. 2 people who claim they were interested in buying a used pickup trucks are now facing several gun and drug charges. it happened in livermore. police say they got a call from a woman who had posted her truck for sale.

what was concerned about a prospective buyer. police say they arrived on the scene of the sellers house and spoke with 2 people that were interested in the truck. officers later searched their vehicle, leading them to find meth, heroin and a gun. both men were from the oakland area according to police. they were both taken into custody. and look at this more than 2000 pot plants and 100 pounds of processed marijuana were seized at the santa clara county property early last week. a special unit with the santa clara county sheriff's office says they've been focused on this specific operation for months. in total. they arrested 4 people. they also took 2 guns into possession during the raid. >> well, take a look at this. it's a time lapse of the aurora borealis. a quick across the bay area. skies. look how gorgeous that looks that happened over the weekend. this phenomenon is because of an unusual, strong solar storm, which is producing northern lights in cities that don't normally get to see him this level of storm

is going to result in visibility issues on your way into work in the north bay and along the bay shore. and some spots could see that fog showing up in the north bay this morning right here along the bay shore and especially along the coastline where we do have some heavy mist and drizzle on portions of 1, 0, 1, 1, at the coast. we will continue to see some burn off occurring into the afternoon by the time that we reach the afternoon today. fog is hugging tightly along the peninsula coast. while the rest of us just enjoying what will be a continued seabreeze. this is going to keep our bayshore cities in the 70's for your afternoon. highs. nothing too terribly warm in this forecast tonight we'll see another push of fog back initially into the east bay hills into the early evening and a blanket of it again to start the morning tomorrow. so it will be business as usual as we work our way into honestly, some a great conditions these next few days, temperatures in the 50's at the coastline for the most part, pretty socked in out that direction, whereas we can expect some 60's from brisbane to burlingame and then some

70's from san mateo down through mountain view and for the south bay, too. san jose, you will get to 80 degrees today will send a clear up at 79 fremont. at 75 today. oakland, you'll be at a cool 68 degrees for your daytime high concord, one of our few spots that reaches the low 80's along with pittsburg, antioch, in vacaville, sonoma and napa. you'll be at 78 while santa rosa at 77. looking ahead. temperatures remain pretty level in this forecast. we're settling in for temperatures that are actually quite seasonable with some 80's on average inland, some 70's along the bay shore and 50's and 60's towards the coast. as for your roads this morning, things out there are doing fine. we do have a little bit of fog overhead. so do watch for that. for the most part in taking out above bridge levels. you're not seeing it impacting too much of our commute. north bay is one of our areas where we're seeing some of the densest of it. michael. >> thanks, john. moving on to more traffic news highway. 37 is back open. parts of the

eastbound lanes were shut down over the weekend as caltrans worked on repaving. some of those roads, the highway reopened more than 10 hours ahead of schedule as officials predicted it would actually open until later on this afternoon. small businesses in monterey county, maybe eligible for a disaster loan. this loan is for businesses who were affected by the march slip out that blocked highway one near rocky creek. the u.s. small business administration says it's providing low-interest federal loans and says non-farm businesses, agricultural co-operatives businesses that are engaged in aapl culture and most private nonprofit organizations may qualify alone. amounts can go up to 2 million dollars. and again, these are federal loans. in the city of santa clara. it's can sitting of considering a bond that will cover millions and infrastructure upgrades for the november ballot. the city says the bond will help tackle more than 624 million dollars and the infrastructure deficit. the money will go

towards public services like repairs to storm drains along with roads and sewer systems. city officials say some fire stations are 55 years old and they need critical repairs. one councilmember, however, says transparency through this entire bomb process is important. so residents know just exactly where the money's being spent. lots of cheers over the weekend san francisco city leaders celebrated the opening of a new public park in that ribbon cutting ceremony was on saturday. and your of a island for the new panorama park. it's located at the island's highest point and offers an incredible view. you can see that they're just breathtaking in see that san francisco skyline along with the bay mayor london breed was there. and she says really the views there's nothing quite like it. >> i don't know if i could never really imagined it. would you see the pictures?

graduation waived the a graduate waive the palestinian flag to cheers as she walked across the stage at the hearse creek theater at uc berkeley's law graduation ceremony this weekend, there was also protest on saturday during the main graduation. protesters have been camped out on the university's campus. now for nearly 3 weeks. happening this week, david de pap of the men convicted of attacking paul pelosi is set to be sentenced on friday. federal prosecutors are asking a judge for a 40 year prison sentence. the path was convicted last year of attempted kidnapping of a federal official and assault. the attack happened during october of 2022 and was caught on police body cam video dip it'd during the trial that he broke into the pelosi home with full intent of holding nancy pelosi hostage. as we get more details this coming friday. we'll keep you updated. well, coming up after

where gunshots were fired at teenagers from the east bay. it happened during a rowing race over in west sacramento. someone fired at least 3 shots that landed near the teenagers. the father of one of the 15 year-old who was among the 9 boys that were on the boat says it was a terrifying moment. >> i was pretty shocked. i think all of us were. it's it's fine. it maybe 10 feet. it could have been closer. could have been a little bit further away, but it was too close. >> officials say no one was hurt. as for a motive, will west sacramento police say they're still investigating. 2 people who claimed they were interested in buying a pickup truck are now facing several gun and drug charges. take a look at happened in livermore. police say they got a call from a woman who had posted her truck for sale online at midnight or so. on wednesday, she called police because she was concerned about a prospective buyer that wanted to view the pickup truck that late at night, police arrived to find 2 potential buyers and

our detention by or in another person sitting in a car near the woman's home. officers spoke with the 2 men in the car and then searched the vehicle, leading them to find meth, heroin and a gun. both men were from oakland according to police and they were later taken into custody. in the north bay newly-installed flock cameras in sandra fell helped police track down a stolen car. police say the van was stolen from the novato area and was spotted during the early saturday morning hours driving into downtown sandra fell. the suspected thief was later arrested and found with the rose ball over on his possession. that driver has since been booked and is currently in the marin county jail. more than 2000 pop plans and 100 pounds of processed marijuana were seized at a santa clara county property earlier this week or last week. i should say, especially unit with the santa clara county sheriff's office says they've been working on this specific operation for months. in total. they arrested 4 people and took 2 guns into

>> new numbers are now available about the state's population. overall decrease on nearly 200,000 people since year. twenty-twenty across the bay area. and while many have left the bay area, a lot of actually stay. they just shifted over to a different county. the latest report comes from the california department of finance demographic research unit. it breaks down the population numbers per county taking a top spot is santa clara county with around 1.9 million people calling the south bay home, alameda county and contra costa county round off in the top 3 kron 4 talked with a spokesperson from the department of finance. he says a lot of this shifting has to do with housing pricing and working from home. >> are people willing to commute distances of those pot points? i think it's even more attractive now that individuals may not have to commute every single day of the week where, you know, comes to having to make that longer commute only once or twice, maybe 3 times week.

the back of a home on bethel island just outside of oakley, according to contra costa county sheriff's department. they responded to the incident saturday afternoon. neighbors tell us the boy was visiting relatives in a complex when he fell off the dock in the back of the home. officials urge people to use as a warning to always be to be wearing a life vest when year or around the water. san francisco firefighters worked to put out flames at a hotel in san francisco's russian hill neighborhood. it happened at the broadway hotel early sunday morning. the fire forced residents to evacuate the building. firefighters were able to quickly put out the flames. however, one person did suffer minor injuries. no word yet on the cause of the fire. in the east bay. lithium batteries caused a fire at the port of oakland yesterday afternoon. crews were able to get the fire under control. the cause is still, however, under investigation. and highway. 37 is back open. part of the eastbound lanes were shut down over the weekend as caltrans

>> welcome back. it's 5.55. santa rosa police arrested a teenager they say was carrying a loaded gun. take a look. this is the gun. police say he had a, quote, glock switch which could turn into a fully automatic machine gun. police pulled over rico co at around 08:00pm last night for allegedly speeding during that time. they you know, asking about registration, things like that. the teen was taken into sonoma county jail on suspicion of multiple felonies. well, a driver in marin county crashed their car into an auto repair shop. take a look at happened in samara, fell at jr auto body shop on saturday morning. police say the driver may have suffered from a medical emergency. they were then taken to a local hospital. their condition this morning still unknown. alameda
