>> good morning. and happy mother's day you yesterday. you aria and i'm james. yeah, we've got a. >> a lot to get to on the news front will be there shortly. we've got a lot of fog, though, out there this morning on yeah. but the weekend delivered which great. and i don't know when we'll see the sun again, john. right. the weekend was so colorful in so many ways that you would have never expected. and now we're looking at the great again. so hey, that's pretty much business as usual for the bay area as we make a return to the workweek. your view outside a half moon bay shows you a lot of that overcast overh ad. of course, that's the expected up the coastline. but you're also seeing that same grey about the bay shore up in the north bay and even in parts of some of our inland areas out towards the carquinez. we will see that fog burning off inshore order and sunshine by late morning before another push of fog inland into tomorrow morning. as this onshore breeze continues, that is going help to moderate temperatures a little bit making for a comfortable day ahead of us.

right now we're sitting in the 50's with concord, fairfield, oakland and alameda. all at fifty-two degrees later on today. daytime highs in the 70's for most of the bay shore. a few low 80's inland and 60's towards the coast. michael thomas is in for rain at this morning with a look at the going. >> hey, good morning, everyone. and happy monday. taking a look at the roads right now. you can see everything seems to be clear, but we are starting to see some delays over a little bit more inland. you can see there's a traffic collision on westbound 5.80, in the pleasanton area left lanes are currently blocked its just east of 6.80, southbound. so keep that in mind. if you're in livermore, heading out this morning, you may see some delays and if you're taking bart, you're also going to see some delays, union city and warm springs where those writers are going to be diverted over to buses because they're doing maintenance. there is no green line service and that is also because of maintenance. and then lastly, over in downtown berkeley, you can see that location is currently closed also because of maintenance. so lots of delays there this morning taking a live look at the bay

bridge right now. you can see it's a 22 minute commute into the city. those metering lights are on. a live look at the san mateo bridge. 18 minute commute there. lots of bumper to bumper brake but there's nothing going on other than the morning traffic from what i can see and the same is for the richmond. sandra fell bridge right now. it's a 20 minute commute over that. lastly, that golden gate bridge coming in at a 20 minute commute into the city james, we'll send it back to you. thank you, michael 701. and today, a new chapter begins in the oakland police department floyd mitchell is taking over as the department's new police chief prop 4 will tran standing by live in oakland. >> with more on, that's been a long time coming for oakland. well. >> been more than a year. that's how long the search has taken since the last police chief. we do know that floyd mitchell will be again in a couple of hours from now. this will be his first monday on the job. the actually took over this past saturday. but he was not in the office, but he will be there at opd headquarters. and in fact, he

will make brief remarks at around 10, 15 and we hope to bring those remarks before the end of our 10 o'clock newscast. he takes over in embattled department an embattled city with people. the public perception believing crime is out of control in the city of oakland. we can tell you the numbers. they say that crime is actually down now from the same time last year. but they are still dealing with sky-high robberies. so he'll have to tackle that. oakland has not had a police chief since february of 2023. when mayor sheng thao abruptly fired chief leronne armstrong run. armstrong is suing the city of oakland for wrongful termination. oakland, they searched everywhere and a lot of people were hoping that they will look within the department. but mayor sheng thao, she continued stay. steadfast looked all over the country and ultimately her eyes turn to lubbock, texas, to floyd mitchell. that's where he was the police chief.

and he comes to oakland and again, we will have his remarks beginning at around 10, 15 this morning. a lot of people they are hoping that he works with the community to tackle the issues because oakland obviously is world famous. but these days it has a bad public perception and mitchell hopes to turn that around. back to you. >> all right. thanks a lot 703, is the time in the east bay. a family is mourning the loss of a 5 year-old boy from ground over the weekend were frantic attempts to save the child. happened on bethel island, crawford's jet moment story. >> contra costa county first responders rushed to bethel island. reports of a 5 year-old drowned in bethel island. we had a young male drowned. >> landing over there. john sullivan, a neighbor says each of these homes has a dock news hitting close to his home. he says this tragedy was praying for you know, it didn't work

>> you're the rescuers did the best they could. >> neighbors tell us the boy was visiting relatives in the complex and fell off the dock in the back of the home. so neighbors say a drowning is really uncommon. some of them have been living here for years and say they've never seen anything like it. but they also said at the same time, water safety is at the top of mind spreading sand words of advice for people who have boats just like this one. i'm very sad about it. hearing about it that that breaks my darlene weaver has lived here for 3 years and says she's never heard of a drowning in this community until now. i'm not blaming the parent, you shows just don't so quickly, right? so accidents happen. that's why they're in. this he is so important. weaver says her family are all experienced swimmers but make sure they all wear life vests. you know, we're in the get down here without investment has more. boaters are expected in the months to come. >> weaver says water safety to her. his personal, you know, the delta. it's serious, you

know, is that current that under current, we've had lots of friends that are not lots but several friends. >> that have succumb. so we don't we won't get out there without a vest. >> on bethel island, moment. kron 4 news. >> all right. 705, is the time one person was injured in a fire at a hotel in san francisco's russian hill neighborhood. it happened at the broadway hotel on polk street sunday morning. you can see the emergency response fire for some residents to evacuate the building. firefighters were able to put it out fairly quickly. but again, one victim did suffer minor injuries. no word yet on what caused that fire. meanwhile, in the east bay, a container of lithium batteries caught fire at the port of oakland. this video from the citizen app shows that plume of black smoke there coming up from the bay. this was yesterday afternoon. crews were able to get it under control. they say a short time later >> and 76 and student rallies

continue on college campuses around the bay and it was graduation weekend. a jewish students organized this rally at stanford yesterday. this is to express support for stanford's mission of diversity and some students to say they feel pressured to keep quiet and that they can't speak about world events. some even feel like they need to hide their face because of all that's going on in the middle happened at cal over the weekend. graduate waving the palestinian flag. >> as she walked across the stage at the law school graduation ceremonies over the weekend at cal. and there were protests the day before on saturday during the main graduation. >> at cal as well as you know, protesters have been camped out on the campus, their account for nearly 3 weeks now. >> we have some new video showing the moments the

teenagers from the east bay were shot at while participating in a sports competition. so it happened during a rowing race in west sacramento. watch the water there behind the rowers to see those pops splashes. those were the bullets hitting the water. someone fired at least 3 shots at these rowers. the bullets passing just over their heads. the father of one of those 15 year-old growers says obviously was terrifying. >> was pretty shocked. i think all of us were. it's it's fine. it maybe 10 feet. it could have been closer. could have been a little bit further away, but it was too close. >> and nobody was hurt. thankfully, police are looking for a suspect. happening this week, david de pap the man convicted of attacking paul pelosi is set to be sentenced on friday. federal prosecutors are asking a judge for a 40 year prison sentence. the pact was convicted last year of attempted kidnapping of a federal official and assault. the attack happened during october of 2022, was all

caught on police body camera footage. we're the pap later admitted during the trial that he broke into the pelosi home with the full intent of holding nancy pelosi hostage. as we get more this friday will update you on exactly what sentence is handed out. san mateo county officials are applauding a block to a tnt's plan to and landline service. >> on friday, a cpu see administrative law judge rejected tnt's proposal that they would be able to withdraw as a result of carrier of last resort. that means they would have to continue to have provide access to basic telephone service to anybody who requested in the service area. but dropped the rest. the cwc still has to vote. on this judge's decision and that will happen next month. highway 37 is back open and ahead of schedule. take a look at this. part of the eastbound

greater side. but guess what? that great going to burn off here in short order by late morning. we're right back to the sunshine for really all of the bayshore our coastal areas. you're going to remain stubbornly foggy for much of the day. you can see this happening in future cast to burn off occurring by late morning towards lunchtime. still foggy at the coast. expect some drizzle at the coast too. >> sunshine unimpeded inland. now, tomorrow we will see the return of fog during the morning. it really streams back in overnight tonight. so another foggy start just around the corner. this forecast a business as usual for the day. that means pretty typical temperatures. very minimal changes a little bit of fog during mornings and some of that comfortable afternoon sunshine, some of that weather that we grow to love, especially this time of year. now, some 70's to low 80's for the south bay today, still holding on to some warmth for inland spots, but relatively cool on the bay shore. oakland up to richmond only in the 60's. the impact of that seabreeze definitely felt vacaville. our warmest of spots at eighty-four today.

tomorrow's temperatures almost identical to today's and wednesday and thursday, a slight bump up in temps for some of our inland spots. the weekend will cool down just a few degrees. most of us will dive into the 70's over the weekend under afternoon. sunshine. >> all right. thanks. i prefer the 80's rather than the 70's, both the timeline and the actual weather. but taking a look at our roads this morning, we're dealing with some small backup. there was a collision. it's already been cleared out. but you can see there on 5.80, westbound. it is causing still some delays in the pleasanton area. those lanes were closed on the left side, but they've just been opened back up. those who are heading out using bart this morning. keep in mind, there's no green line service union city and warm springs area. those writers are going to be diverted over to a bus with in those spots because of some maintenance going on. and then over in downtown berkeley, there's also a closure right now at that station because of maintenance. taking a look at some drive times this morning, livermore to dublin 16 minutes

dublin to fremont 20 minutes. san leandro to milpitas 30 minutes milpitas to sunnyvale. 8 minutes. a look over at the antioch area. if you're headed to concord, it's a 41 minute commute. taking a look at westbound 80 right now. crockett to the maze. 29 minutes. not too bad for this time of the hour and a live look at the bay bridge. you can see it's a 21 minute commute into the city. i will send it over to 2 at the desk. >> thanks a lot, michael. at 7.17, and more than 2000 marijuana plants and hundreds of pounds of pot was seized on a santa clara county property. you can see the growing operation here. this raid was carried out last week by a special unit with the santa clara county sheriff's office. they had been investigating for months. they found a and arrested a total of 4 people. and as you can see that they also found 2 guns. in the north bay, newly installed license plate readers and sandra fell helped police to track down a stolen car. a van

that will cover millions in infrastructure upgrades. it will on the november ballot at this point. that's what they're trying for. the city says this bond will help tackle the more than 624 million dollars in infrastructure funds deficit. the money would go to public services, including repairs to storm drains and roads and sewer systems. this city fire stations are 55 years old and they're in need of critical repair, too. one council member says transparency through the bond process is important. residents need to know they say exactly where their money is going. >> well, there are new numbers about how many people called the bay area home. the latest report comes from the california department of finance demographic research unit and shows an overall decrease of nearly 200,000 people since your 2020. but taking the top spot in terms of the most populated counties is santa clara with 1.9 million people calling the south bay home alameda and contra costa counties round out the top 3. kron. 4 talk to

>> 7.29 is the time. a whole new weekend weather very different than what we had over the weekend. oh, yeah. from the blazing sun that we saw on saturday, john were greeted with fog as we wake up this morning. yes, we are. we are looking at all different look to it as step outside. this is the about as good as a look. you're getting from the east bay hills right now as it's completely fogged in up there. >> and that blanket of cloud cover is going to stay with us for several more hours before burn off right before noon time today for a lot of the bayshore. so we'll see those peaks of sunshine, more and more towards late morning winds from the coastline now very much so dominating this

and you can see it's really stop and go bumper to bumper, but really no reason why other than just the morning commute. and it's the same with the richmond. sandra fell bridge 13 minute commute over into the north. and lastly, that golden gate bridge, lots of fog this morning, but it's still only a 28 minute drive into the city star and james. 7.31. right now and the big story is what a life and what a legacy that was celebrated. san francisco over the weekend for the reverend cecil williams has so many people coming together to reflect. >> he was known, of course, for his work as a civil rights leader and lgbtq+ activist. he died last month at the age of 94 co founded the glide with his late wife and he devoted his life to it. kron 4 sarah stinson has more. >> 800 people packed into the sanctuary at glide memorial church in san francisco sunday to honor the life of reverend cecil williams looked around

at all the people here, overflow people, the sanctuary. this 11 feet right the people he passed away on april 22nd in his home. his daughter kimberly shared what he was like in his final hours. i want everyone to know she was radiant and full of and like that day for more than 60 years, the reverend fought for civil rights and champion of the lgbtq+ community. whether that the people living on the street or notable politicians like congresswoman barbara lee. >> sat right over there in 3rd probably the 3rd sing and every sunday. reverend williams helped me through some very challenging, very challenging personal as well as former san francisco mayor willie brown, vice president kamala harris and political activists, professor angela davis. >> those who under

>> until lgbt community. >> political activists like myself, williams first came to san francisco's tenderloin neighborhood in 1963. to help run glide, church and glide foundation. quickly after he made the brave decision to make the church inclusive to all. >> when he stood up for folks in the lgbtq community to get rid of the stigma. and this city that did not embrace this community williams and his late wife, janice america, tony, expanded glide to become what it is today. a safe haven providing food and services to thousands of people a year that the crack epidemic isroel and the streets. >> you know, engaging the public 6 no ha ve he never shied away from those new issue he wasn't going to >> the celebration of life for williams was filled with

unconditional love, acceptance, forgiveness, compassion. he's recovering revolution against injustice and oppression. >> i'm sara stinson reporting kron. 4 >> and the south bay fire officials responded to this fire on a church property in santa clara. it happened last thursday and it was at mark's episcopal church. you could see lots of flames and smoke here coming from. well, you could see several blocks away coming from the central courtyard at first and then the fire grew. and as you can see, the teams here trying to make sure that this building was untouched. they went to the back of the building, which is where the fire crept up to, but they were able to save nearby buildings from getting burned for members and nobody was hurt. a car crashes into an auto repair shop in sandra fell. take a look at this. it's jr auto body that

was hit. buy this car saturday morning. the driver police say may have suffered medical emergency. the driver was taken to a hospital. we don't know their condition, but you can see it just launched right into the friends. >> 7.36 is the time to people who claim they were interested in buying a used pick-up truck are now facing several gun and drug related charges. it's all happening. livermore. police say they received a call from a woman who had posted her truck for sale. but after midnight on wednesday, she called police because she was little nervous about a prospective buyer who wanted to view that pickup truck really late at night. police arrived and they found a potential buyer and another person sitting in a car park near the woman's home officers. talk to the 2 people in the car and then searched the vehicle and that's what led them to find inside what you see on the screen. they found meth, heroin and a gun. both men were from oakland and they both now been taken into custody. alameda county district attorney pamela price now taking on major car
