home on 20th avenue. tara moriarty joins us live. you have just spoke in to en to a family member, what do they say? >> reporter: i spoke to a sister of one of the victims, she says she has received many phone calls, it turns out the victim is a prominent member of the asian community and lives here, many believe the suspect did not randomly pick this house to rob. ambulances whisked away two women stabbed with a knife and bludgeoned with a hammer by a home intruder. >> shocking. >> one of those women 76-year- old rose chung, who she says is a fixture in this neighborhood. >> everybody loved her. she is very cheerful. everybody here knows that she is well off, owning many restaurants but she lives in

this modest house and somebody must have known this fact. >> police say the suspect an asian male broke into the home, brutally attacked her and rifled through drawers. >> the second victims, a 56- year-old asian was delivering food when she interrupted this home invasion and was also attacked by the suspect. >> that victim works at this icebox, a restaurant owned by chung, you could see a trail of blood where the second victim ran to get help. >> it was a grew some crime scene, very violent, both victims are in the hospital with life-threatening injuries at the time. >> rose's sister says she is still unconscious. you know she is horrified by the brutality of the crime. police told her the knife used snapped off inside of rose. they say members of the chinese community will often keep money on their person rather than

banks and perhaps the person knew this. he is an asian male, he speaks cantonnese. >> the sheriff could be charged as early as today in connection with a domestic violence case. he had little to say as he left his home this morning. >> you have anything to say to us sir? >> no, not really. >> district attorney has said he would decide by the end of this week whether to charge him. police responded on new year's eve to a neighbor's report of a domestic dispute. the new sheriff and his wife both deny anything happened, a crew is closely following the story and we will bring you developments as they happen. a man charged in a string of sexual assaults in the mission neighborhood appeared

in court for arraignment, frederick dozer junior is charged with 26 felony counts, including sexual assault, kidnapping and attempted murder. this morning he pleaded not guilty to the charges and waved his rights to a speedy preliminary hearing. >> he is not asking for a speedy hearing. he is not asking for a speedy trial and -- and so basically we are just going to get another court date, probably a month from today. there is a lot of information that i need to receive still from the d.a. i have basically nothing. >> dozer is being held without bail and set to return to court february 23nd. he faces life in prison if convicted of all the counts against him. an investigation is underway at city college of san francisco to determine if personal information of thousands of students and staff was stolen. according to the chronicle a data security team discovered a virus last year at the college. it may have been infiltrating

their electronic systems since 1999. the school's chief technology officer says it looks like personal data like banking information was sent to sites in at least ten countries, including russia, china and iran. a new civic organization was just announced in the last hour, joining the leaders of major technology companies with the leaders of san francisco. new at noon ktvu's mike joins us live to explain what this organization will do. good afternoon, mike. >> reporter: good afternoon. tech companies making a political slash on this friday here in san francisco. they are now truly an organized force. the mayor has always said he wanted to embrace the tech world and today at a press conference that just wrapped up he did just that. it was here where they announced he and 85 tech firms, including zinga, twitter and others have formed a group to

engage city officials on public policies. now what does that mean? he says it is to give advice for problems and the mayor says there are a number of problems, unemployment, a deficit and the mayor says he is welcoming this new interest group to help find innovative solutions. >> we have to have the right training, curriculum and get the industry to tell us and engage with us who are the people, who skill sets are they going to look at when they are hiring people. >> we represent the new economy in san francisco and with this partnership we hope to create thousands of new jobs. and that is going to be or first charter. >> reporter: the new interest group called sf city says one of its first short-term goals is to establish an

apprenticeship to get people jobs and make them the innovation capitol of the world. >> with a new target store scheduled to open in fremont in march the retailer is taking applications today for hundreds of new jobs. >> with the new store opening we are expecting to do quite a bit more volume in fremont, so we will need a bigger team. >> dozens of people filled out applications this morning at the target store at the new park mall. target is holding a job fair there from 8:00 to 3:00 today and tomorrow. the new store will be on pacific commons boulevard and will bring more than 300 new jobs. another national retailer has announced plans to do a lot of hiring. hundreds of those positions are expected here in the bay area. we will have that story for you coming up in about 16 minutes. president obama is asking congress for the power to be able to scale down the federal government to shrink its messy bureaucracy, a few hours ago he

announced he wants to combine six agencies, he says they have overlapping economic responsibilities. the president is calling on congress to reinstate the same authority that past presidents have had to streamline government. >> our economy has fundamentally changed as has the world but our government, our agencies, have not. the needs of our citizens have fundamentally changed, but their government has not. instead it is often grown more complicated and sometimes more confusing. >> the white house says making government smaller could save billions of dollars and that some jobs would be cut through attrition. we learned just a few minute ago a judge this morning postponed the trial for former presidential candidate john edwards after receiving doctor's letters stating edwards has a life-threatening health condition. attorneys submitted two letters from a cardiologist stating

edwards will require surgery. edwards faces 6 felony and misdemeanor counts related to nearly 1 million dollars used to help hide his pregnant mistress during his 2008 white house run. the trial is now scheduled to begin on march 26th. a camera was there as a wild police chase ended in the bay area. ahead more of these pictures. and rosemary will tell you about record high temperatures and when rain may move in. plus the game is tomorrow but operations are also underway at candlestick park. we will tell you what they are just ahead.

two men are under arrest after a chase that came to an end on an oakland freeway on- ramp. the chp says it started when they tried to pull over a suspected drunk driver. the driver refused to stop, getting on and off the freeway and finally ending up in oakland when police say he tried to get back on 880 then tried to make a u-turn on the on-ramp. a cruiser was able to stop him by nudging his car. police had to use a taser on the driver. he and the passenger were

arrested. the san jose police department is revealing more about a stab in near a bar. it happened just before 1:00 a.m. near the escape bar on south bascome avenue and foxworthy avenue. two men were fighting inside the bar and ended up at a nearby apartment complex, when san jose police say a 33-year- old man from campbell stabbed a 26-year-old san jose man in the neck, the victim is expected to be okay. police did arrest the suspect. mountain view firefighters spent much of this morning putting out hot spots from a fire sparked by downed high- voltage power lines. they came down just before 9:30 last night near the microsoft campus, flames were so high neighbors thought they were coming from microsoft but no buildings were damaged though almost 400 customers were without power for hours. most of the electricity was back on by 8:00 a.m. pg and i pg&e crews are

investigating and checking if there was possible equipment failure at a substation. >> when you talk about transmission lines they are definitely high-voltage so it is going to take assessment, safety procedures and work to make sure that our equipment is restored and safe. >> no firefighters were injured but one person living at a nearby mobile home park was taken to the hospital suffering from smoke inhalation. the navel criminal investigative service says it has identified all four marines who appear to be urinating on corpses in afghanistan in a video that showed up on utube and ncis says it has interviewed two. it is not clear who recorded it but investigators say it likely occurred between march and september when the marines were deployed in afghanistan. the two who have been interviewed are at their unit's home base at camp lejeune north carolina. the other two will be contacted at other units where they have been transferred. the 4 could not only be court-

martialed. they could be tried for war crimes because descrating an enemy's corpse violates conventions. joran van van der sloot was sentenced. >> he is sentenced to 28 years. >> the judge ordered him to pay $75,000 in restitution to the family of the victim, stephany flores, van der sloot pleaded guilty to murder under wednesday. under their penal system he could become eligible for far roll after serving half the sentence with good behavior. he is still the primary suspect in the 2005 disappearance of natalee holloway while on a high school graduation trip on aruba. a man described as a disgruntled employee opened

fire with a shotgun, killing three people and critically injuring a fourth. it took place at the mcbride lumber company. they later found the gunman, round ronald dean davis where he shot himself in the head. he is in critical condition. he left a rambling six page letter. firefighters are trying to contain a wildfire in the san bernardino mountains, it started when a woman drove her pick up off highway 18 around 11:00 last night. she was not injured, by this morning the fire had burned 15 acres but authorities were worried it would spread because winds are blowing from 30 to 45 miles an hour, 400 firefighters were on the scene overnight and highway 18 remains closed. 49er fever is growing and so is the security around candlestick park ahead of tomorrow's big playoff game

lower after chase reported a rare earnings miss and standard & poor's has lowered france's credit rating down one notch to double a-plus, the same rating as the u.s., the dow down 70, nasdaq down 16, s&p is down 8. home depo is adding thousands of employees to help customers this spring. the retailers busiest season, the chain says it plans to add 70,000 workers across the country, as many as 1000 here. home depo says last year about half the people it hired as seasonal workers ended up getting full time positions. home depo's biggest rival is also gearing up, lowe's is looking for 40,000 seasonal workers, lowe's says the process could take weeks and stores in areas with warmer weather will complete their hiring before stores in colder states. a financial analyst from san jose is 2 million dollars richer after winning the new york state lottery.

actually a lot more money than that. daniel brusher bought the $208 million winning ticket at a long island supermarket. he says he was on a trip back east visiting relatives over the holidays. he says he will take a lump sum payment that comes to $101 million after taxes. apple blames angry crowds outside a beijing store for delaying its release of the iphone 4-s in china today. hundreds of people spent the night in freezing weather waiting for it to open. when it did not open on time they threw eggs at the windows, no one was hurt but they were concerned about safety and they are not saying when it starts sales of iphone at apple stores in china. tonight at 5:00 a new tb
