what could be the team's last start to the season in oakland. hanging over today's game, the team's possible move to las vegas. right now, thousands of a's fans are outside the coliseum. some plan on attending the game, but many say they are staying outside in protest. hello again everyone. >> i'm julie julie haener and i'm mike mibach first pitch for the oakland a's just about one hour away. we do have team coverage for you on this home opener. ktvu zac sos outside the coliseum with some of those boycotting fans. but first, let's go inside. jason appelbaum with more on the game day matchup between the a's and guardians. hey, jason. >> yeah, mike, first of four here at the coliseum. and you know, a lot of, i guess i don't want to call it doom and gloom, but, you know, what's going on outside is a totally different story than what's going on here inside, because they have a game to play. and even though the a's lost 112 games last year, and that's a franchise record, we all know that when it comes to the spring that everybody is hopeful because everybody is

zero and zero. nobody's won a game. the a's are currently in first place and the a's, they have some new faces on this team. two of them came over from the giants. j.d. davis, the third baseman in san francisco last year. he hit 18 home runs last season. and pitcher alex wood, he's going to make his first ever opening day start after 11 years in the big leagues. a few of those with san francisco. but you know, the a's not oblivious to the bigger story that would this could be the last opening day ever here at the coliseum as the a's have their impending move to las vegas a few years from now. manager mark kotsay, he's sympathetic to the fans. many who plan to boycott tonight's game. >> you know their emotion and passion to want to keep this team here, and the way they express it, you know, is, is with passion, you wouldn't expect anything less from from oakland a's fans, when they come out, they come out with support,
6:02 pm
with love and, and they do it full force, you know, and i think, for us tonight, the focus is just going to be on the game. >> in the opposing dugout tonight will be steven vogt. he makes his managerial debut with the cleveland guardians. and it's a homecoming for vogt. he played half of his ten big league seasons with the a's. and you may remember a couple of years ago this is how he ended his big league career in 2022, though. drives one right field. >> did he do it? he did. are you kidding me? that's good. >> yeah, yeah. vogt ended his big league career in style and now he's back at the very park where he hit that home run. and now in a new role. we talked to him about an hour ago in the dugout. >> i've dreamed of this moment my whole life, but nothing's about me. so it's a it's a lot
6:03 pm
different. but i similar excitement levels and obviously being back in oakland is pretty special. >> we're going to say it is about you in a sense. i mean, your last at bat here was very dramatic. we all remember it. now you're coming back to manage at this place. just take us through your emotions. heading to the ballpark today? >> yeah. honestly i don't really know what to feel. you know, it's one of those things that i don't know what i don't know yet, and. but i just couldn't be more thrilled to be a part of the cleveland organization. it's such a great place with good people. and we have a great team. and to be starting in oakland, for me is very, very special. >> catchers typically make good managers, and steven vogt was a very good catcher over his 1010 year big league career. another little bit of history going on tonight, jenny kavner, the a's play by play announcer. she will make history as the first female primary play by play announcer in big league history. so we'll listen to her and watch for her on the call on nbc sports california. but that's the scene here as the a's get set to open

for games against the cleveland guardians. as you said, mike, first pitch about an hour from now. >> yeah. and looking behind you, man, it looks thin. jason i mean, i've been in there for home openers. i've been in there for playoff games, sold out crowd. i mean, your sense of what to expect inside when it does come to how many fans are going to be inside. >> you know, mike, this is a bizarre situation. i'm very curious about it myself. i'm really wondering if we may have, for the first time in history, more fans outside the stadium than inside the stadium. i believe they just opened the doors so you can see that some fans are trickling in here to the coliseum, but i'd be very surprised if they got up to, you know, 10,000 tonight inside and i heard that at least the folks who are organizing some of the boycotts in the parking lot, and we'll hear from zac sos, they're looking to try and get 20 to 25,000 people out there. so we'll have to wait and see. but let's just put it this way. i can hear you crystal clear. i don't have to ask the crowd to quiet down right now. there you

go. because there's nobody here right now that says a lot. >> but as soon as that first pitch is thrown, when it comes to in between the lines, hey, those players are pros, they'll go out there and play a good game and hopefully the a's can get the w. jason, thank you. >> well you heard jason just talking about it a big part of this opening day game are the fans and a large segment of the fan base is outside of the coliseum tonight. many say they will not go into the coliseum protesting the team's possible move to las vegas. ktvu zac sos is live now outside with the fans. zach, what are you hearing? >> well, you heard it. that's there from joe. plenty of spirit for the a's outside of the coliseum, just not inside of it. it appears these fans, they love their team. they just do not love the ownership. this is the first day of what they are calling their summer of boycott and the message pretty much clear. they have the signs that says, they say sell the team. they're urging a's a's owner john fisher to sell the team and scrap his plans to move to las

vegas. the organizers several fan groups, including the last dive bar, are hoping other fans that see them outside will perhaps skip the game, too. and they plan to do this all season long. i spoke with a fan taking part. here's why. he says the a's mean so much to him. >> i've been going to games ever since i was little. i grew up back in the late 80s, early 90s, going to games my childhood is here. all my memories from baseball are here and that's why we call it the last dive bar. it may not be the most pretty home, but it's our home. we could go anywhere in the city and be like, oh, 20 years ago, i sat in this seat and watched barry zito win a cy young. i was over here, watched tim hudson when his 20th game and clinched the playoffs for the a's. so all my memories are here. this is my team. i grew up with. i don't want them to leave. it's not the fans, it's the owners. our team. >> so unclear how many fans are out here right now, but organizers say they're hoping
6:07 pm
for anywhere from 20 to 25,000 to possibly 30,000 fans to take part in these boycotts. and at the top of the fifth inning, they plan to chant sell the team. they're hoping that they're so loud that the fans inside of the coliseum can hear them, too. back to you. well they have a good start there. >> a large, presence out there tonight. zach. thank you. well giants fans were out earlier today to watch their team play. even though the giants season opener was out of town in san diego. we found giants fans across the street from oracle park at momo's bar and grill. the game was on every screen there, as you would imagine, so they could all watch the giants play their home opener at oracle a week from tomorrow. some of the fans say they never miss giants opening day games. >> i've been going, i've been going the last couple of years, so i've definitely tradition. >> now i work, you know, right on the block where the park is and i love orange. >> so i hear you say go giants.
6:08 pm
