train in darby, delaware county. now to philadelphia's nicetown neighborhood. we've been following developments here since 4:00 this afternoon. a young child trapped under this car has now died after he was hit walking home from school. let's get right to denise nakano on north 15th street. what can you tell us? >> reporter: a tow truck just left the scene after moving this car involved in the crash off to the side of the road. a boy who is 7 was dragged about 75 feet up to the point of the red vehicle you see here. if we can go to video, we can show you. police say he walked between two parked cars into the path of the brown car traveling north on north 15th street near erie. the driver told police he did not have time to stop. >> what we have so far, the child was on the way home from school, crossed the street

midstreet in between two cars and wasç struck by a car. of course everyone's very upset, including the driver of the vehicle at this time. he's inside our headquarters being interviewed. >> police do not believe drugs, alcohol or speed played a role in this deadly crash, again, that 7-year-old boy walking home from school when this accident happened. the driver is cooperating with police and investigators say no charges are expected. reporting live from nicetown, i'm denise nakano, nbc 10 news. nbc 10 following a developing story this evening. investigators say that fire at a south jersey executive's home was arson. cooper elleth system's ceo john sheridan and his wife joyce both found dead after the sunday morning fire. nbc 10's rosemary connors live tonight in camden. where can we get reaction on this latest development? >> reporter: i've been talking to hospital workers who tell me they are disturbed to learn that the fire was intentionally set at the sheridan's somerset

county home, this as the autopsy results are still pending. we do not know the exact cause of the couple's death. 72-year-old john sheridan and his 69-year-old wife joyce died early sunday morning. he had been the ceo of the cooper health system since 2008. he joined the hospital in 2005. before that he had been a senior partner at a law firm in central new jersey. until today, the prosecutor's office in somerset county has revealed very few details about the fire at their home on sunday. what we do know, it was con tenned to the master bedroom. that may explain why little damage was visible from the outside of the house. when i did reach out to the prosecutor's office for further information, for more details, i was simply told the investigation is ongoing. at this point they are still remaining tight lipped. i also reached out to cooper hospital for comment. they did release a statement which says we are saddened and shocked by what has been reported about the death of john sheridan and his wife, joyce. their deaths already unbelievably sad are now tragic.

our deepest condolences go out to john and joyce's family for their terrible loss. the couple is survived by four sons and grandchildren. we'll continue to stay on top of this story and bring you new developments throughout the night. reporting live in camden, rosemary connors, nbc 10 news. questions this evening, after a state trooper was shot and killed by a colleague during a training exercise. >> i couldn't believe i got the phone call. i mean, that's a phone call you never want to receive. >> the death of this trooper, david kedra, has many asking how did a deadly accident like this happen at the hands of trained professionals? nbc 10's deanna durante has been woshing to get answers about this accident all day long. she joins us live tonight from the training facility in conshohocken. >> reporter: state police are only saying that that fatal shot came from another member of the pennsylvania state police force units here. we're told that they booked training at a facility here on the montgomery county public

safety training campus yesterday. they bring in their own instructors. it was during or after some sort of instruction here at the facility when that fatal shot was fired. we spoke with troopers at troop k in skippack where the trooper worked. they said tonight they only want to focus on the troop eer's and fallen officer's family. >> he was an extremely enthusiastic trooper, highly motivated. you could tell every single day he walked in. he was extremely proud to be a pennsylvania state trooper and he showed it. >> reporter: he was a rookie trooper on the job less than two years and sources say he wasç getting strunge getting instruction yesterday. sources say he was accidentally shot in the chest. >> this kid loved his job and with that kind of attitude, you're determined and bound to be a great state trooper. >> reporter: trooper david kedra is a philadelphia native and a graduate of roman catholic high school and temple university.

state police tonight say they won't talk about the investigation or what may have caused the shooting. now, did i reach out multiple times to a state police spokeswoman who is based in harrisburg. she said that she would not be answering any questions about the investigation. we can also tell you family members are working on funeral arrangements this evening. reporting live in conshohocken, deanna durante, nbc 10 news. this is not the first time a police officer's been shot at the public safety training campus. in april of last year, a norr norristown police officer was shot in the leg during a training exercise. he wasn't seriously hurt. the campus offers drills and exercises for police, detectives, firefighters, emts and other first responders. the revel casino has sold for 110 million today's a canadian company. it cost 2.4 billion to build. brookfield u.s. holdings loc owns the hard rock in las vegas and the atlantis paradise island

in the bahamas. it's facing its own financial problems in las vegas. the company said it didn't have the money to make an interest payment due to lenders back in august. but brookfield says those issues will not affect its ability to complete the revel purchase. >> it is brand new. like i said, we're assuming they're planning to offer those jobs. >> i'm very happy that it has been bought and maybe i can apply there myself. >> reporter: the sale could be finalized next tuesday in bankruptcy court. new at 6:00, federal prosecutors accused a new jersey national guard army member with sexually abusing a woman at a military base. the guardsman's name is ionas carazupas. the department of defense says there's been a jump in sex assaults in the military.

in its most recent report, officials say there were more than 5,000 cases of sexual assault in the military from october 2012 to september 2013, that's up 50% from the previous year. now to decision 2014 and race for governor in pennsylvania. republican governor tom corbett and democratic challenger tom wolf engaged in a lively second debate today that became tense at times. among the big issues discussed, the state's economy and pension reform. with 4 1/2 weeks before the election, things became heated. corbett trying to frame wolf as the candidate who will favor labor unions over taxpayers while wolf tried to blame corbett for budget deficits and struggling schools. how to fund those schools was certainly a hot topic. >> i would impose a 5% severance tax. some of that money would go back to the localities allowing drilling. hundreds of millions of dollars of that could go to fund

education. >> when it comes to fair funding, that is the decision, that is the commission that's out there working right now, how much does every school district deserve? not just the school district of philadelphia. >> the final debate between the candidates will happen a week from today, october 8th near pittsburgh. the election is now more than a month away on novemberç 4th. that's just 34 days from now. an update on breaking news we brought you yesterday about that 2-year-old delaware boy who shot himself in the head. today nbc 10 met zack shaheen in claymont with his cleaning service crew. yesterday he rushed to help the toddler when he heard his mother screaming that her son shot himself. zack worked to control the bleeding until paramedics arrived. he says when he walked in, he did not expect to see a toddler. >> there was no detail, she said my son was shot. i thought an oler teenager and

when i went in, i was really shocked to see someone to young. >> a.j. is in critical condition tonight. the boy is expected to survive. police haven't answered our questions yet about who owned the gun and how a.j. was able to get it and they have not filed any charges against anyone living in the house. to philadelphia's school budget crisis. there's now trouble for the cash-strapped school district. the school system's bond rating has been downgraded. fitz rating did so this weekend and says the outlook remains negative. berks county authorities have arrested a teacher's aide who they said went on a driving rampage outside a school. she's a teacher's aide at perry elementary center in perry township. she's charged with dui tonight. just after 9:00 monday morning she hit several parked cars outside the school and ran over the lawn. back in august she was charged with public intoxication and disorderly conduct.

secret service director julia pierson is out. she's resigned after multiple scandals rocked the agency's credibility. the latest incident happening in atlanta when a man with a gun was allowed to be too close to president obama. republicans, democrats, even president obama urged pierson to leave. her resignation is effective immediately. "nbc nightly news" with brian williams will follow the latest developments and analysis, coming up next at 6:30. nbc 10 first alert weather tracking cloudy and cooler night ahead as the sun gets ready to set. here's a live look from our cape may camera. a lot of clouds there at the beach. nbc 10 chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz here now with your first alert forecast. despite the clouds, most of us stay dry tonight. >> just about everybody will stay dry tonight and overphiladelphia itself, we're seeing a little bit more blue than we have in much of the day. we've seen more clouds in new jersey than elsewhere. that's kept the temperature down

a massive manhunt for a suspected trooper killer has prompted police to ban hunting in some of the search areas of northeast pennsylvania. archery season opens this weekend. several townships in monroe and pike counties, where police are looking for eric frein, are now off limits. police are asking hunters to be on the lookout for any signs of the suspect. for a region so dependent on

sour i tourism, taking a big hit for almost three weeks now. >> reporter: the discovery of the pipe bombs in the middle of the eric frein manhunt continues to reshuffle the tourism industry here. they were tourists lured to the poconos by the autumn leaves and the abandoned penn hills resort. >> they were up there taking pictures and they're from new york state. who would think that you'd have a couple girls down here taking pictures of an abandoned building. >> in the middle of a manhunt. >> in the middle of a manhunt. >> reporter: the girls ended up being arrested by straud township police forç trespassi. the eric frein manhunt has brought in the curiosity seekers while scaring off the lucrative fall tourists. the theodore b. price general store in mountain home has been open for business that isn't there. >> we had our hot cider, our

specialties out. we had hardly any people. i think it's all because of the fear of coming into the area. >> reporter: tourists don't want to drive past scenes like this one to get their pumpkins and fall mums from stone wall center in canadensis. until searchers find fugitive sniper eric frein -- >> people think of our township because of that. that's not what we want them to think about. it's a safe, beautiful place to come. >> reporter: the latest discovery of a camp fire in a cave behind a water fall doesn't help that image. merchants know it's the necessary evil in order to find eric frein. in price township, doug shimell, nbc 10 news. and the evidence police have collected in nearly three weeks gives them reason to believe their closing in on frein,

including two pipe bombs, serbian cigarettes and diapers plus an assault rifle and ammuniti ammunition. also new at 6:00 tonight, wul have to wait a while to ride patco's refurbished rail cars. a software problem is forcing a delay in delivery of the new cars. a live look at the ben franklin bridge where the new cars will run eventually. patco hoped to test the cars last month. because of the new problem, it's uncertain when testing can begin. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. >> well, we're ending the day with more sunshine than we've seen in much of the day, mix of clouds and sun, more clouds in new jersey. more sunshine in some of the western suburbs in the philadelphia area. weekend showers, everybody's going to get some of those. everybody's going to get a weekend chill, too. especially compared to last weekend. more than 20 degrees cooler. we have a fair amount of sunshine, at least in some areas now.

70 degrees in philadelphia. wind is out of the east, 3 degrees cooler than we were at this time yesterday. now, the temperatures continue to hold in the 60s in much of new jersey, from trenton to atlantic city. it has not gotten above these numbers during the day today. we were in the mid-70s in reading with at least a little bit of sunshine and farther away from that east wind. now, you can see all the clouds coming down from the storm in new england. that's why new jersey is seeing more of those clouds right now. there is nothing on the live radar to be concerned about. you can see this spin here up in new england but we're not expecting it to come down in this direction. the futurecast shows us that, generally dry conditions tonight, tomorrow, tomorrow night and into friday but there is a cold front that's going to be approaching here as we go into friday night. late friday night. because we're not going to be

seeing anything -- look at that, friday evening, we're still okay. but here we come early saturday morning. that front comes in and we may even end up with a line of thunderstorms late in the morning or midday hours. once that goes through, the colder air comes in for the rest of the weekend. way below average for this time of the year. mostly cloudy as we go through the nighttonight, 58 for the low temperature in philadelphia. clouds and sunshine tomorrow, only into the low 70s. and the seven-day forecast, more sunshine on friday. no rain friday or friday evening. it's after midnight, saturday morning it's going to rain. maybe a few hours worth of rain plus a thunderstorm and cool and windy. then at night, 47 in philadelphia, maybe upper 30s in some of the coldest suburbs and real chilly for the eagles game sunday afternoon. good thing you're playing in the afternoon, not at night. then a little bit milder earlier next week.

clouds hanging around a little bit. >> we're seeing a little bit of a break in the philadelphia area. they're still there in new jersey. it's been a nasty day across a good bit of new jersey. the closer you are to the ocean, the nastier it's been. look at that blue in the sky around the philadelphia area. that's nice. it's a nice change. we've seen a lot of clouds today. we expect another day of clouds and sun tomorrow, near normal temperatures. even more sunshine on friday. the rain is going to be coming saturday morning. it just doesn't seem much doubt about it. it's a cold front that's coming in, maybe several hours of rain. could be briefly heavy. could even be a line of thunderstorms coming through and then it's dry and cooler the rest of the weekend. >> cool overnights on the weekend? >> really cool overnights, absolutely. for glenn and all of us here
