you need to fix that. >> it's cold outside! >> good morning. welcome to "nbc 10 news today." i'm chris cato. >> and i'm tracy davidson. let's get an update on the temperatures and find out how it will warm up today with meteorologist bill henley. wishful thinking, bill. >> you're freezing in here in august. >> that's true. >> i am cold! >> it could be 100 degrees in here. [ laughter ] >> okay. >> outside, it is colder this morning. the temperature's coming down, thanks to that strong wind bringing in the cold air we saw yesterday. the wind is dying down, but not completely. a live, dry view of center city from the adventure aquarium, it's 33 degrees in northeast philadelphia, which includes the airport, millville is down to 34 and 37 in pottstown and trenton. factor in the wind, and it feels like it's right at the freezing mark for philadelphia and trenton. 29 in allentown and 28's the windchill in south jersey and millville. forecast is calling for sunshine, though, and we will see it by 7:00 this morning. the sun's up. welcome back to standard time. 49 degrees at 9:00, and into the upper 50s at lunchtime.

back in less than ten minutes with your neighborhood by neighborhood forecast. now to get you updated on your ride to work early monday morning -- >> so far, things have been smooth. i hope i didn't jinx things. katy zachry is in with a look at the clear and cold roads. >> chris, i hope you didn't jinx things either, because for the last hour, things have been looking great on the area roads. we'll start off with a live look at 676, vine street expressway right at broad street. the expanse of the vine looks great. 76 looks good as well. for drivers in delaware county, springfield township, providence road between baltimore pike and bishop road, there is some construction there for you to be aware of. and as we zoom out and take a look at your average speeds on the area roads, route 1 is in the 50s, 95 south of philadelphia, you're in the mid-50s. and the 42 freeway is in the mid-50s as well. and we take a live look at the 42 freeway right at creek road. this is in belmar, where you can see by evidence of all the headligh

headlights, traffic is picking up as it heads northbound to the area bridges and philadelphia. when i see you in a bit, we'll take a look at delaware roads. >> it is 5:02. new from overnight, police in montgomery county are investigating a crash after an suv slammed into a utility pole. this happened on haverford road near andover road, lower merion. officers say the driver lost control of the suv, hit the pole, which as you see there snapped. the driver was not hurt. now to decision 2014. there are just about 24 hours to go before voters head to the polls in pennsylvania, new jersey and delaware and across the country. the biggest race we're watching is the battle for pennsylvania governor. >> governor tom corbett will be campaigning in west chester today. his democratic challenger, tom wolf, is criss-crossing the commonwealth. stops in lancaster and pittsburgh. nbc 10's jesse gary joins us now live in studio. if these polls hold true and tom wolf wins, will we see an immediate change? >> well, campaigning one thing, governing completely different. tom wolf, if elected, will have to show he can do more than take

shots on corbett. he has campaigned on increasing funding for education, things that resonate in the philadelphia region, but to have success in harrisburg, he'll have to work with a legislature that could be divided or in the hands of the republicans. >> i think a lot of it's going to depend on how much tom wolf is willing to go from the governor's office down to offices in the capitol of leadership in both parties to talk about how they can advance a shared agenda. >> of course, the election is not over. we've been talking a lot about pennsylvania this first half hour. i'm also researching and digging into races over in new jersey. a very big race. i'll have that for you coming up in the next 30 minutes, guys. >> all right, jesse, thanks. of course, in that final push for undecided voters over the weekend, the candidates for governor had some big names campaigning alongside them. governor corbett was joined by new jersey governor chris christie at a rally in ivyland, bucks county. corbett has been trailing wolf by double digits in most of the

polls. governor christie, though, called his keystone state counterpart a tough competitor. >> all right, pennsylvania. he's a tough competitor. he's made taxes even lower in pennsylvania. he's made regulation even lower in pennsylvania. he's stolen more jobs from new jersey while he's been governor. >> now, governor christie has made at least four visits to pennsylvania recently in support of corbett. meanmeantime, thousands cam a tom wolf rally at temple university, including president obama. he touted wolf's experience as a businessman, saying he will handle the economy better than corbett. >> he knows how to create jobs here in pennsylvania. he's done it. and now he's running because he believes that if you work hard in this state, if you work hard in this country, you should share in the country's success. >> if wolf beats corbett tomorrow, it will be the first time a pennsylvania governor lost re-election since 1970. meantime, the president's trip out of philadelphia hit a bit of a snag last night.

there was a minor mechanical problem with "air force one," so he and his group had to be transferred to a backup plane. you can count on nbc 10 for early returns, reaction and live reports. joining us starting at 8:00 tomorrow evening. nbc 10's keith jones will be covering the corbett campaign in pittsburgh. lu ann cahn will be in york with the wolf campaign. we'll also have crews covering the big races in new jersey and delaware. we will have more on those races coming up in about ten minutes. you can also learn more about the candidates and the issues that will be decided on our website, nbc10.com. 5:05. a development today in the atlantic city casino crisis. taj mahal workers are set to march on city hall later this morning. they want mayor don guardian to reconsider granting concessions that the casino says are necessary to stay open. about 1,000 workers have signed a petition calling on guardian and other officials to do everything possible to keep the taj from closing. the casino has threatened to close in december, if it doesn't get an aid relief package from the local government. now, a new report shows atlantic

county has one of the highest unemployment rates for metropolitan areas in the entire nation. the jobless rate in the county was nearly 11% in september. that's the highest rate for metro areas east of the rocky mountains. four casinos in a.c. have closed this year, leaving about 10,000 people out of work. if you take septa to work, you should have a normal commute this morning. the transit agency and its largest workers union hammered out an agreement late friday, avoiding a strike threatened for today. the new contract is expected to be officially ratified later this week. it includes a 5% raise for workers. 5:06 right now. happening today in philadelphia, the lawyers for two men charged in that deadly building collapse in center city will be in court to decide if they're ready to go to trial. griffin campbell and sean benschop are charged with murder. a tentative trial date has been set for september 2015. in june of 2013, you'll remember, the wall of a building under demolition at 22nd and market streets collapsed on to the salvation army thrift store, killing six people.

benschop was operating heavy machinery at the time. griffin was the demolition contractor. also today, the trial is expected to begin for a philadelphia man charged with abuse of a corpse after his mom's body was found stuffed into a freezer. william carrasquillo surrendered to police in july. investigators found the body of his 83-year-old mother in the basement freezer of their feltonville home. police say the body had been there for about seven months. carrasquillo claims his mom died of natural causes. authorities believe he hid the body so he could cash her social security check. prosecutors are building a case against eric frein. authorities are testing a rifle recovered from the abandoned airport hangar where the accused cop killer was caught. they're trying to determine if that's the weapon that was used to kill a pennsylvania state trooper and injure another outside a police barracks in pike county. frein was captured thursday night after a seven-week manhunt in the poconos. and now that frein is behind bars, business owners in that area where the search was conducted are hoping things will get back to normal.

they are seeing some signs of that happening. a number of businesses say the search hurt their bottom line, some losing up to 30% of their normal business. but yesterday, though, customers started to return to restaurants and shops. now that frein is no longer roaming free. >> it's totally dropped off. there were days where it was like a ghost town here. back to normal. everybody was a little bit more chipper and upbeat, and you know, everybody's talking about how he was caught, and you know, just getting their life back to normal. >> now, a lot of those businesses say, though, the damage was already done, because september and october are their peak months for business. police in gloucester county are looking for three men that teamed up to distract a woman and rob her. it happened thursday afternoon on elmer street in franklinville. police say a man knocked on the victim's door, said he was working for a tree cutting service, and he convinced her to go to her backyard. that's when the other suspects went inside her home and removed a safe. now, this is a sketch you see here of one of the suspects. those men were last seen taking off in a newer model white chevy

traverse suv. charges have been upgraded against a delaware man after a pregnant woman who he allegedly assaulted died from her injuries. 24-year-old fernando flores is now charged with manslaughter. the victim gave birth to a baby girl before she died. at last check, that girl was listed in critical but stable condition. flores was arrested october 19th after a domestic deputy with paola delgado-polanco at the waterford trailer park on samantha circle in bear. now, your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> temperatures are still falling at this hour. we're seeing 30s for most of the area. it is a cold morning. the wind was so strong yesterday, has died down. we'll see less wind today, and a warming trend that starts today. 40s yesterday. we'll be in the upper 50s to near 60 this afternoon. but we're a long way from it right now. 34 in mt. pocono. trenton is 37 degrees. and wilmington at 40. and it's in the 40s at cape may. this is a live view and dry view at that of beach avenue from the

marquis de lafayette hotel. let's stay dry today. and the temperatures will be climbing. it's the wind that's dying down. now, calm in pottstown, down to 7 miles an hour in trenton and northeast philadelphia, but the windchill is still present from the pocono mountains, allentown, millville, feels like it is in the 20s and 30s this morning. so, it's a cold start. satellite, though, a few high clouds and more high clouds to the north. some of these high clouds will move in during the day, but it will not stop the temperatures from climbing nicely this afternoon. a good deal warmer than yesterday, 50 degrees for the pocono mountains, middle to upper 50s for reading, allentown and quakertown. sunshine nice and bright for doylestown, northeast philadelphia and mt. holly. and still a little bit breezy at the shore. upper 50s for rehoboth, cape may and atlantic city. while inland, it's bright sunshine and temperature up to 60 degrees for philadelphia and close to it for chester and voorhees. there is some wet weather in our future. i've got the seven-day forecast when i come back in less than ten minutes.

5:10 as you get started to hit the road on your monday morning. you'll definitely want the heater on, that's for sure. >> nbc 10's first alert traffic reporter, katy zachry's watching the roads. >> the heater's the first order of business, and then just looking out for any issues on the roadways, because i really don't have many to tell you about. a live look at 76 right at route 1. 76, the entire expanse is free and clear of any issues. no accidents on route 1. and take a look at your drive times on 76 between the vine and the blue route. 14 minutes in both directions. you'll take it, right? because you know as the morning goes on, it's only going to creep up. so, for lincoln drive drivers, lincoln drive northbound, right near gypsy lane, there is a car bumper reportedly in the road, so crews are removing that right now. but you know how narrow lincoln drive is, so just be aware of that. 95 at cottman avenue, of course, there is a long-term construction project right in the southbound lane, taking out the right lane right here. it's not tying things up. for delaware drivers, live look at route 1 right at route 13. no issues to report for delaware

it's 5:15. countdown to decision 2014. voters head to the polls tomorrow across the country, including in pennsylvania, new jersey and delaware. new jersey and delaware voters are both electing u.s. senators. in pennsylvania, no senate seats are being filled, but all but two of the state's 18 members of the house of representatives are seeking re-election. that's just the start of the list. nbc 10's vai sikahema is live in our digital operations center to break down the races we'll be keeping an eye on for you over the next 48 hours. so, vai, let's start in pennsylvania. >> yeah, of course, tracy. the big race in pennsylvania, the granddaddy of them all is the gubernatorial race, but also among the contestants seats for congress in the keystone state are two races to keep an eye on out mike fitzpatrick is facing an aggressive challenge from kevin strouse. he's a former army ranger and a first-time candidate for office. and in the 6th district, republican ryan costello is

competing against dr. trivedi, an iraqi war veteran. they are after jim gerlach's seat. >> now to new jersey and the fight for party control of the house in new jersey. >> yes, there is a fight for that. 4 of the 12 delegates for the house of representatives are expected to change hands in the midterm elections. right now, they're evenly split between democrats and republicans and analysts don't think that will change now, eve in the midterm elections. but also in new jersey, there's the u.s. senate race between senator cory booker and republican challenger jeff bell. that's going to be a tough road to hold for bell. he's raised about $500,000. booker's got nearly $18 million in his coffers, tracy. >> right. and let's go to delaware. what are we watching there? >> well, in delaware, the democratic senator, chris coons there is going to take on republican challenger kevin wade for a u.s. senate seat. there's one house seat there up for grabs, and the attorney

general, the auditor and treasurer will also be decided there as well tomorrow. and of course, you can learn all about the candidates and the issues that will be decided at our website, nbc10.com. live in the digital operations center, vai sikahema, nbc 10. all right, vai. we also want to tell you about this. a new nbc news/"wall street journal" poll shows likely voters deadlocked over which party they want to control congress. 46% of likely voters want republicans to take control. 45% say they want a dramatically controlled congress. republicans are more popular with male voters and democrats with women. a couple halloween candy scares to tell you about, the first in the lehigh valley, where a teen says she found a pen inside a candy bar while trick or treating. it happened on the 7400 block of catalpa drive, lower macungie township, lehigh county. police are asking anyone else fining pins in their candy to call them. this is a day after a similar scare in towamencin township,

montgomery county. a teen found a razor blade inside the wrapper of a candy bar. police in california say they have made multiple arrests on a hit-and-run on halloween. a briefing is later today. the crash happened in santa ana on saturday night. 13-year-old twin sisters and their 13-year-old friend were struck and killed while trick or treating. family, friends and colleagues gathered to honor a fallen philadelphia police officer over the weekend. they held a candlelight vigil at 66th and broad streets at west oak lane last night. officer chuck cassidy was murdered there seven years ago. cassidy walked in on a robbery at a dunken donates on halloween in 2007. he was shot in the head and died from his injuries the next day. john lewis was sentenced to death for his murder. now, your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> we're waiting for sunshine. we're less than two hours away from seeing sun. it will be nice and bright. it will be up before 7:00, but the temperatures at that hour will be down. they're still falling right now under clear skies.

38 degrees in philadelphia. that's five degrees colder than yesterday at this time. not much wind compared to yesterday, when we saw winds gusting to 45 miles an hour in the philadelphia area. now with the temperatures falling, we're looking for temperatures that feel like they are near freezing in parts of the area, when you factor in that light breeze that's blowing. langhorne, levittown all down to 35 degrees. it's 36 in warrington and richboro. and farther inland, nothing but 30s for quakertown, perkasie. a cold start. you'll have to bundle up this morning, but it's going it be a warmer afternoon. the radar is nice and clear for our area. no sign of any rainfall for the next few days, but a lot of sunshine. that's what we'll see. mostly sunny skies. we'll see high clouds today, but those will not prevent the temperatures from climbing into the upper 50s to near 60 degrees this afternoon. and it's a warming trend that is going to continue tomorrow. the seven-day forecast up to 65 degrees tomorrow afternoon with

plenty of sunshine. and that sunshine will be fading on wednesday, but the temperature will be up in spite of that, high of 66 degrees on wednesday. wednesday evening, the clouds building. we could see some late evening showers on wednesday and likely that we will get wet on thursday, a high of 63 after a morning low at 50. rain showers continue thursday night, and still a few rain drops in the area on friday morning, but by friday afternoon, we'll be drying out. and temperatures won't be as warm over the weekend. once those showers move out, the temperatures come down. 40 degrees saturday morning with a high of 50 in the afternoon. down to 39 degrees sunday morning and then back up to 50 with the wind blowing sunday. 20 minutes after 5:00. monday mornings are challenging enough without any traffic problems out there. so, let's not have any of that. >> let's hope for a smooth ride. we'll find out from nbc 10's first alert traffic reporter katy zachry. katy? >> yeah, unfortunately, chris has not jinxed us by, you know, saying the good news over and

over again. yes, no accidents to report this morning. we'll start off in northeast philadelphia. for drivers there, route 63 or woodhaven road. a live look right at knights road. things are looking great in both directions. 95 looks good if you're headed into center city, philadelphia, but of course, be aware of that construction in the southbound lane as you approach cottman avenue. the bridges look great. this is a live look at the ben franklin bridge. there is, of course, track work in the westbound direction, taking out two of the lanes in the right-hand side. when i see you in a bit, we'll take a look at the lehigh valley as well as new jersey roads. >> all right, katy, sounds good. happening later today, the independence seaport museum in penn's landing will launch a new program to help schools in philadelphia. the mentoring program will help high schoolers with an interest in science, technology, engineering and math. a ceremony will be held aboard the cruiser "olympia" this morning to celebrate that partnership. it is moving day at the world trade center. we are live in new york city later this morning as the first workers get ready to set up snob 1 world trade. and getting your gift there on time. can you believe that we're

and we're trying to see if we can see "vogue" magazine's offices, where the lights are resuming into them. they will be moving in later this morning, set to occupy the 25th floors and "vanity fair" magazine the upper 40s, for 175 employees of condi nast, this is a huge day. they will be starting their work day in these new offices. the middle floors of 1 world trade, and many describe it as significant. condi nast plans a lengthy stay here. it runs a number of magazines. over the years, city officials had disagreements over the reconstruction, but it's really come to this, this big company moving in today. moving trucks brought in office supplies, furniture earlier this month, and condi nast will eventually bring in more than 2,000 employees and take up floors 20 through 44. condi nast released a statement yesterday, saying that it is proud to be part of this important moment of renewal for the city of new york. as the first major media company to commit to relocating downtown
