let's start off with our top story. it is election day. the control of both the house and the senate hangs in the balance. national correspondent peter alexander is on capitol hill this morning. peter, good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning to you. like the capitol dome itself, you may say congress is undergoing renovations. no less than complete control of congress. could the republicans have a wave tonight? the real question is can republicans win six seats? that's the number to watch tonight, total number of seats they need to win to take over the senate. will today's election put republicans in complete control of congress? up for grabs, 36 senate seats and all 435 spots in the house. as much as $4 billion spent on the congressional races alone. >> pretty soon you're going to want to do this to your tv. >> reporter: there are ten major senate races to watch from alaska to new hampshire. republican candidates are

relentlessly tying their opponents to the president, like pat roberts hoping to hold off opponent greg orman, who still hasn't said which party he will side with. >> a vote for greg orman is a vote for the obama administration. >> reporter: others have filled the democratic void. >> but you have to vote. are you going to vote? >> reporter: gop weighing in with its own big name. >> we want brave, courageous politicians. >> i grew up castrating hogs on a farm so when i get to washington i'll know how to cut pork. because washington is full of big spenders, let's make them squeal. >> reporter: basically deadlocked with bruce braley, would become the state's first female senator, shaking off these controversial statements.

with my little toy, and iowa. if republicans are winning here, they're already at 47. they need four more. then they only have to win half of these. they're already winning in arkansas, ahead in iowa, colorado, alaska, kentucky. but if those two end up on the democratic side then suddenly our long night, week, month nightmare could be here. >> make no mistake about it, tomorrow would be the unofficial race of the 2016 presidency. >> it is. >> what could we learn tonight that might affect the presidential race? >> those are the four senate races that are already presidential battlegrounds. republican party wins three of those four, you have to say, you know what? maybe they can get back in the game and here and win the presidency in 2016. that's the only one i would be watching. >> tale of two presidents, clinton and obama. you have a map to show us. >> this tells you the democratic party is no longer the party of

new information, play by play, second by second of what happened just before the plane broke apart, as investigators say human error is one of a host of issues that could explain why the co-pilot unlocked the plane's braking system prematurely. overnight, the ntsb released a detailed timeline of the failed test flight that killed one pilot and injured another in california's mojave desert on friday. at 10:07:19 am at 45,000 feet, virgin galactic spaceship two separated from its carrier and its rocket ignited. nine seconds later, ntsb says cockpit video shows michael alesbury who died in the crash unlocking the plane's feathers or brakes, something usually done only when the plane is ready to glide back to earth. ntsb says when the co-pilot unlocked the feathers prematurely, they appear to have

deployed by thesz. seconds later, the aircraft broke apart. >> reports of debris 35 miles northeast of that section. >> reporter: the surviving pilot, who parachuted out of the aircraft. international space station leroy chow is fascinated by his survival. >> reporter: i assume both pilots had oxygen bottles and were wearing helmets with a feed of oxygen. he would have been able to maintain enough consciousness to get out of the vehicle. >> seibold is still recovering, unable to tell investigators what he remembers of the accident. industry under close scrutiny, waiting to hear from the only person ever to survive a commercial space flight crash. because this was a test flight, there are literally thousands of pieces of data to analyze after the ntsb unwraps its on-site

the latest on this. gabe, good morning to you. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. so far, neither peterson's attorney nor prosecutors are commenting but nbc sports is reporting that a plea deal could be presented to a judge here as early as today. this morning, adrian peterson is preparing to head back to court and the stakes are high. >> lawyers have been working on a possible plea agreement. i'm told if a deal is struck, felony child abuse charge against peterson would be reduced to a misdemeanor. >> reporter: the star running back has pled not guilty to reckless negligence to a child after he disciplined his child with a tree branch or switch earlier this year. >> this is a case about parenting decisions and about whether something unfortunate has happened by a man who loves his children very much. >> reporter: keeping him off the field with pay while out on bail. last month, prosecutors tried to

have him rearrested after he allegedly said he smoked a little weed before his drug test. that could come up in today's hearing or it could be off the table as part of any plea deal. >> if adrian peterson isn't sentenced to any jail time and he petitioned the nfl for immediate reason statement, it would be put commissioner roger goodell in a difficult position. >> reporter: they say he has been slow to discipline nfl players. an arbitrator will question him tomorrow in the ray rice case. >> there isn't precedence to look at. whatever roger goodell does will create precedence. >> reporter: right now, peterson's trial is scheduled for early december. if he does reach a plea deal it's possible he could be back on the field before the end of the season. matt, savannah, back to you. >> gabe, thank you very much. carson is still going hard on "the voice." that means tamron is in the orange room.

>> in a way it's shining a light on where there were tension points? >> exactly. money, work, sex are problems before or issues before, it gets worse after the baby comes, but temporarily. >> it comes down to, i think, how you view this particular issue. are the kids first in the family or is the relationship first? are they on equal footing? and people have widely different views about that. >> yes. it's not about loving your baby more than your partner. it's really like two different relationships. i look at it more like being on an airplane. you have to put your own oxygen mask on first. your relationship feeds you so that you can nurture your baby. it's important to keep your relationship strong. >> we heard one of the husbands talk about date night, which is great. >> when you can get it. >> it's not always that feasible for a variety of reasons. you talk about date moments. >> you nurture the connection in the relationship. maybe you bring home a special dessert or gather leaves from the front yard and present it as a bouquet. it's about staying in that warm personal connection that got you

good morning. i'm tracy david sob. let's get your first alert forecaste from meteorologist bill henley nl we're enjoying the sunshine after the clouds came through last night and that prevented the cold air from getting through. 54 in northeast philadelphia, still in the 40s for dover but not for long. a quick warmup expected. plenty of sunshine at lunch time. 67 degrees at 4:00 this afternoon. on the roads there's still a significant problem on 95. >> that's right. still have an accident out there 95 northbound in lawrence township specifically here exhibit 5. an overturned school bus.

no children on board and nobody was hurt. we the still have lanes restricted in that area. this is a mile and a half approaching the scene at route 31. you the see the traffic is still at a crawl and this is five miles from the accident. we have a delay of five miles on that portion of 95 northbound. avoid it if you can. we're hearing from the philadelphia police commissioner for the first time about the young woman who was abducted and it was caught on camera. >> we're very fortunate that we do have video. i mean that's one of those kinds of cases where the video really tells a story. >> car lee sha freeland gay you abducted on saturday night in a german section of philadelphia. commissioner ramsey says the fbi is working to enhance the video. she was force into a four-door gray or silver car, the rear windows are broken out. a reward is up to $15,000 for information about that abduction.

>> great question. very interesting. the athletes, you would think, are powerful. they fade very early. it's a mental game. take joan rivers who won three years ago. she's a big part of this show. >> let's talk about that. obviously, first of all, what made her so good at the apprentice? >> she had an amazing mental strength. physically, she was great but she had an amazing mental strength and she's on two episodes of this show as a judge. she takes ivanka's place on two shows and she was fantastic. i saw her a few days before she passed away. i want to tell you, i said she's going to live forever. you look at her. she was so strong and vibrant. she was so great on the show. we have two shows with joan in it. >> was there ever a consideration to reediting those shows after she died? >> there was and we decided in memoriam we're going to do something and honor her during those two shows. she was so good and she would have liked it that way, i think. she was terrific. >> do you keep doing this because you love it or do you

exciting. we finished the film last november. it all happened quite quickly. it's something we're all very proud of. so it's wonderful. >> a lot of people, of course, have heard of stephen hawking. this is his story but it really is jane's story. she's a key part of this. >> absolutely. and that's why i love when i sat down and read the script. there was this wonderfully complex, fascinating female character and it was just so much for me to get my teeth into. and she really is a very determined, strong woman to be playing. >> i was going to say, you actually got to meet the real jane, which is wonderful. i always wondered how those meetings go. is she talking and you're staring at her mannerisms, saying i've got to remember this? >> absolutely. i was nervous because you're playing a real person so they're going to be seeing this film at some point so you want to get it right. it was exactly that. i was talking to her and asking

her questions and then you're watching how they pick up a cup of tea or how she moves her foot, just trying to absorb everything so i could play her as truthfully as possible. >> there is a truthful and beautiful love story at the heart of this. they find each other. they're young, vibrant, beautiful. he is diagnosed with this terrible disease and jane casts her destiny with stephen. i found myself wondering, would stephen hawking have accomplished all that he did without her? >> i think it was very much the two of them together. often with famous successful people there's a partner, someone in the background who is supporting and giving and it was totally the two of them together. as you say, it's a true, true love story and a love that lasted for 25 years. 25 extraordinary years. >> an incredible job, you see this deterioration in his body certainly not his mind or spirit. what was it like to work together? >> it was fantastic. we've known each other a few

years now and seen each other at auditions and turned down for so many parts together. >> it's a bonding experience. >> exactly. commiserating together. it was wonderful. i have such respect for him. i've seen his work in the theater and loved that it was very easy and collaborative. wonderful working with him. really extraordinary. >> the early part of this takes place at cambridge. you went to oxford, right? >> i did, yeah. >> was your college experience a little different from there? >> yeah, yeah. it was very hard work but also having, you know, good times and met some of my best friends there and, yeah, had a great time. >> we have to love gq. here is gq's take on the movie. here is your new study buddy. where is the picture? >> oh, gosh! there i am. >> really focusing on the academics here. >> exactly. it's just fun to do something a little bit different. i haven't done anything quite

bad thing but apparently it's a good show. >> occasionally for the contestants. it's like iron chef meets deal or no deal. we get contestants who come in, get to cook against one of my chef gladiators, we call them and they win money and then they get a chance to take that check or rip it up and face the next contestant for more money. >> we've got the gang downstairs in the studio, all tasting what you've already cooked. the smell of brussel sprouts has been in the air all morning. >> right. >> i have a few peppercorns. i'm going to grind them myself. nothing better than freshly ground pepper. >> even if you have one of those grinders? >> that works, too. make sure it come out nice and coarse. that's where it's at. straight on to the steak. if you grind it too fine you'll get a lot more heat out of it. >> you've chosen what? new york strip? >> boneless.

can you cook it with bone in but this is quicker. steaks coming up to room temperature for 45 minutes, which a lot of people think that's strange and what we're told to do more often than not is take things straight out of the fridge and cook them. if you want a beautifully evenly cooked pink steak you really want it to come up to room temperature. >> doing this on the stove in a very hot iron skillet. >> nice hot iron skillet. cast iron really retains its heat, which is beautiful. i put it on five minutes before i start cooking. leave it go. you can turn it every minute, that's a good way to cook a steak or leave it four or five minutes on each side at once. >> do you score the fat? >> especially if you have a nice fat, that will help it to break down. >> even as you're cooking, let's find out how they're eating downstairs. how does it taste, guys? >> peppercorn brings out the flavor. >> and we've all noticed how curtis has stolen tamron's

haircut. >> they like your haircut. guys, thanks. this meal is quick start to finish. >> it really is. we'll create some brown butter. pan goes on to the heat. drop a little bit of butter in. let it start to foam. see how we're getting that foaminess around there? >> right. >> let that start to happen. let the butter just gently turn brown. season that with salt and pepper. take your brussel sprouts, thanks, matt. which actually i have already blanched my sprouts. pop them into ice cold water before you put them into the butter. >> do you want them to be a little crunchy at the end or cook straight through? >> i want them to cook pretty much straight through. you want them to develop that crunchiness on the outside, little bit of texture. >> who in the tasting team downstairs is a fan of brussel

sprouts? >> i love them. >> we love them. >> don't forget the broccoli. broccoli's really good. >> tasty. >> brussel sprouts just stink up the house a little bit. >> they can. that's okay. while the steaks are nearly done, what i do is pour a little red wine into the same pan. >> what kind of wine, what kind of red? >> it's just a dry red. as long as it's just been opened it's fine. you don't want to use wine from days ago because you'll get that sort of corky smell to it. turn them over. you actually deglaze in the pan, lifting all that flavor from the bottom of the pan back into it. >> they don't have to stay in there all that long once the wine is in there? >> that's right. take them out. let them rest. the steak has been out of the pan for five minutes. just allowing that temperature to drop down. cut directly across the grain of the steak. you don't want to -- go for it, matt. get in there. you don't want to cut it on an angle, which a lot of people do.

cut straight across the grain. you get this beautiful, tender piece of beef. >> another possible side. >> orchetti, really simple stuff. >> any questions for curtis while i chew here? >> can we have some more? >> why do you not cut at a slant? i thought you were supposed to cut at a slant. >> i didn't hear that. >> the steak, why do you cut it -- >> why cut it across not at a slant? >> good question. look at the center of the steak here. the grain of the meat runs directly down one way. if you cut on a slant you'll cut with that grain which will make it a chewy piece of meat. if you cut across, you'll cut right across that grain. >> learned something new. >> thank you. >> curtis stone, by the way, congratulations. your restaurant out in l.a., rave, rave reviews and all kinds of awards. >> thanks, matt. it's been a lot of fun. >> good to have you. curtis stone, can you find these recipes on today.com. curtis will be back a little later with a recipe you voted

it just happened in the last few minutes. the 76 westbound just past golf mills. it's a multivehicle accident. so just for the last roughly four minutes all lanes were temporarily blocked. we had an ambulance out here. it's unclear if there are any injuries but traffic is getting by just on the shoulder so we do have a big delay. after almost 36 hours of searching, still no sign of 22-year-old carlesha freeland gaither who was abducted on sunday nigh, her kidnapping caught on video. the fib is working to enhance the video. the award for an arrest and conviction is now at $15,000. decision 2014 election day is here. voters are already casting ball lots for senators, congressmen, local leaders and one governor's race in pennsylvania. be sure to tune in to nbc 10 as we bring you live reports this afternoon from major campaign headquarters and of course election results later tonight after polls close at 8:00.

one large mug of hot water with lemon every day. also take ten minutes at night to care for your skin and tammy said to us fresh raw kiwi smeared on the face, allow it to dry then wash it off. takes ten years off. be sure to do the neck as well. i love that advice. with the cold weather coming up, i brought in dr. susan taylor, dermatologist, who has done clinical research for johnson & johnson and ñigalderm which makes some of the products featured in this segment. betty odum, i won't reveal her age. all these years later, she's not done me wrong with the mask advice. why does it work? >> it's great advice t puts good ingredients in your skin. >> okay. >> and it takes out dirt and impurities. >> okay. and i don't use a drying mask. you look at some of the '70s sitcoms and the mask would get really hard. why does the hydrating work for my skin? >> your skin tends to be a little on the dry side.

some women who have exceedingly oily skin would benefit from a drying mask. not you, but some women. >> dermatologists, i've never visited a dermatologist. i do get facials once a season. when do we need to see a dermatologist? >> most women and men should see a dermatologist when they turn 30. >> really? >> for a variety of reasons, to have those moles checked. even women of color get skin cancer. and also for good skin advice. all of our skin is a little bit different. >> but it's especially important with cancer and not just for beauty. >> that's right. >> which a lot of people assume. >> beauty is important but cancer is very, very important. >> let's take a look at some of the things you've brought in for us today. what do you have here? >> a couple of masks here. we have a clay mask for those women who tend to be oily. we have a cucumber mask for women who tend to be dry and a salt mask for those in between. >> does it have cucumber in it really? >> you need to read the ingredients to see how high up it is in the list of ingredient.

>> we can't tell the product i use for standards reasons but you looked at the active ingredients in my product. what do you like in some of the active ingredients? >> there are a whole host of things that i like in the active ingredients. for example, different botanical agents, plant agents that can hydrate the skin. they also have antioxidant properties. >> look for that? >> absolutely. antioxidants make a big difference. this time of year, tamron, we want to use sunscreen even though we're going into the colder weather. >> i do sunscreen every morning. >> perfect. >> every morning and every night i wash my face and i use sunscreen. a lot of people of color, again, believe -- black women are the fastest growing population with skin cancer. sunscreen in my foundation, is that enough? >> not enough.

you need another one. you want a moisturizer that's hydrating. >> i have a day cream and night cream. do you need both? >> the day cream has to have spf 30 or higher, broad spectrum. and your night cream needs to be more moisturizing. >> tell us about this. i also want to know about cleansing oils. those are so popular right now. >> yeah. >> that's counter to my mind. i think oils clog. >> and they can. so if you're acne prone or have oily skin, you don't want to use the cleansing oils. >> we'll skip to our beautiful jess who came in from the plaza. we pulled her right off the street. you'll show us the proper way to wash our face. i use a white cloth every day. >> perfect. >> you see the lady splash on the commercial and i'm like what is that? >> you want to wet your face. chris, we're going to ask you to wet your face. >> you think wetting the face first? >> absolutely. >> because i just pump the cleanser and go. >> chris said her skin is a little bit oily.

time. >> right. >> and they don't care what you look like. they just need their mommy. >> what i felt from them, like i said, it changed my whole perspective on my life and my love and what i thought love was. >> you talk a lot about relationships. i was so glad you were so aprop because so many of us have been through heartache. i found myself nodding and saying, that's me on that pageç and that's me on that page. you say, after a breakup, people turn to different things, alcohol, some other things. you said you turned to another man. >> immediately. that's the thing you don't let yourself heal. i never thought of that. i just thought, oh, okay, i found somebody else and this is over and that was hard, so i'll just start new. i thought that was healthy. i was ending one thing that wasn't good and going to another thing. but i -- >> you say passion with love. >> many times, many times. and, you know, i realize now that what i was seeking, i never

became whole on my own. i never let myself heal and i never -- i never feel whole on my own with my own love, with a love inside of me. >> value. >> yes. >> when people go to the bookstore and page through it, that's what i do, like at the first chapter and read a little, when you read the very beginning of this book, it grabs you by the shirt collar and shakes you. it talks about the day that you kind of started freaking out a little bit because you were realizing your marriage wasn't right. >> right. >> you dive in the deep end right in the beginning. >> one of the scariest moments of my life, you realize -- i had been suppressing thisçó feeling this idea that it wasn't working for so long, and it was finally, like, coming to the surface. and i had a terrible kind of like anxiety attack, you know, i felt like my heart was beating out of my chest, i felt like i was dying, i felt like i wasçó going crazy. i didn't know what was happening to me. thank god my mother was there, and i was, like, something is

happening. >> it was -- the peak of -- you're the most beautiful woman in the world, magazine, number one song and video in the world. >> number one song and video, number one television show, "american idol". >> everything was -- >> everything on the surface, everything seemed like it was perfect, and wonderful. and in a sense, it was. but my personal life was kind of crumbling, and i didn't want to face it. and in that moment, i had no choice. >> he sayou always think you cae it better. >> i'm an optimist. >> it will be better. >> right, that moment when that happened, i realized, i was, like, if he's not happy, i'm not -- i'm not happy. you know. not because he's not happy, but because i haven't been happy for a long time and i'm not facing it and he was brave enough to say it first, you know what i mean? it was, like, well, hold on,

there is something super wrong here. and the slow realization of that and trying to go, okay, we need to get back on track and realize it wasn't -- >> when consistent things in your life, your mom, your sisters, benny, your friends. >> thank god for benny. >> thank god for the bennies in your life. those are the people that help get you through your time. >> how is your relationship now? >> very good, thank god. you know, we have to raise those kids together. he's super supportive of me. i'm supportive of him. you know, i think weñi both dee down wish that it wasn't the way it was, but at the end of the day, i think we feel like it is a good choice for us, good for the kids, and they're never going to be lacking for love in any way, shape or form. >> for anyone who has gone through anything difficult, gone through heartache, i can tell you, you learn something from this book. i know i did. >> you're going to love the

more now of our special series "the four talks ." today we focus on how to talk to your kids about alcohol and drug abuse before it becomes a problem. >>someone who knows the pitfalls of substance abuse all too well is former nba player chris herring. >> a natural talent, countless

opportunities and the world at his fingertips, but his battle with drugs and alcohol cost him his basketball career. as a freshman in high school, he started drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana. as a college ballplayer, chris used cocaine. but after being drafted to play professional basketball with the denver nuggets, chris was crieded cried traded to the boston celtics and his addiction began. within seven years, he was spending $12,000 a month on heroin, overdosing four times. at that point, with seven felonies on his record, chris had the cards stacked against him. fortunately, his loving wife heather remained by his side. she and a support system helped chris get the treatment he needed. >> wow. >> we should say that chris has been sober since 2008. he's traveling the country sharing his story. >> and he's here today with julie holland, a psychiatrist, specializing in pharmacology. sitting close to you as you're

watching that history unfold of what happened, do you feel like that was -- that happened to another human being or is it as real now as it was? >> it is realer, yeah. it is. because you always have that fear of falling back. and you got to be aware of that. it is always tough watching that. >> it is interesting because you're an athlete, and so it must have been baby steps to the edge of the cliff, wasn't it? you had to continue playing, you had to have stamina. >> absolutely. i mean, i never imagined by taking one painkiller it would lead to eight years on heroin. that wasn't the plan. >> do you think it was because you already dabbled so much in marijuana and cocaine before that happened that you were just more susceptible to it or -- as a way of life, almost? >> i think that's the process. it started early and that's why i do what i do today, to try to get out in front of the kids and i think we have --çó we teach o kids too often about the perils,

the last days of addiction, and not the first day. >> not the beginning. what is the right time to start having the conversation about alcohol and drugs with kids? >> i always said if a kid can ask a question, they can get an answer. anytime it is coming up prosecution if they're lea -- i they're learning it at school, if they ask, you should bring it up. >> if you're going to bring it up, you need to make sure it is a teachable moment, and they're in a good place to hear what you have to say. i think that's crucial. >> when are children experimenting with drugs is now what age would you say? >> the national average, i believe, for alcohol is 12 and cannabis is 14. but one of the big problems now, i think, is pharmaceuticals. and people -- i know ages 18 to 25, the biggest segment in our country using pharmaceuticals. one thing to keep in mind, overdose from pain meds are dwarving any overdoses from illicit drugs. all illicit drugs combined. >> chris, having the talk with your own kids, was that

difficult? do they know your history? how did you do it? >> it was on espn. so i had to sit down prior to it airing and it was emotional. necessary. it was a healing moment. you know, but i think every kid, you know, being out in front of kids all across the country speaking, i think it is very important to ask them how -- why aren't you good enough, just being yourself at 14, 16. >> is it kid tris trying to fit? are they numbing themselves? >> i think peer pressure plays a big part. i think studies show that most kids are not in high school, but the kids who are are the loud voice. >> do you think your kids have an issue with drugs or alcohol, what is the first thing you should do? >> i think most important thing to keep in mind is these things don't happen in a vacuum. it may be that family therapy is what is required or individual therapy, but you want to keep the lines of communication open

with your kids. and you want them to be able to trust you as a resource, and if you don't know or if -- we can look it up together, we can figure it out together, but sometimes you need professional help. i'm a big believer in family therapy. >> great advice. thank you for coming to see us. we really appreciate it. >> tomorrow, helping your children understand divorce and death. we want to hear about the questions you are being asked by your children. please go to our facebook page and let us know. >> we're back in a moment.
