traveling through columbia. we are pretty good in both directions. here's jfx southbound on the right side virtually clear for you in both directions. and for those of you making the drive around the beltway this early hour, 695 at baltimore national pike you are good to go between i-83 and i-95 on this southwest side. remember to follow us this morning on twitter at maryland traffic. now back to charley. good morning. six police officers are in a hospital after being shot in utah before midnight in ogden north of salt lake city. authorities say the officer wereer is afg drug-related search warrant at a home. suspect is hospitalized and investigators are not sure if the officers or the suspect's conditions at this time. it's the latest video to go viral showing a baltimore city police office are arresting a suspect and being sucker punched during the holiday weekend. linda so is here with more on this video. linda. >> reporter: well, just minutes ago we checked how many vees

had video got after being -- how many views this video got after being posted. you can see police officers trying to handcuff a suspect on the ground on east monument street with drug complaints recently. officers are about to handcuff the suspect when another man comes charging across the street and punches the officer in the face. there's a brief struggle before he is arrested. he is 40-year-old manuel imel a man with a lengthy criminal report of theft, drugs anddomestic violence. officer that was hit was not seriously hit. >>i don't know if there's clearer example of what the men and women of this agency go through each and every day to keep the -- keep the city safe. these are officeers that are rising their lives to keep people they don't know safe and to make our community safer. >> reporter: this morning imel is held and charged with assaulting the officer. other man being arrested in the video ran away from police.

there's a warrant out for his arrest. linda so, abc2 news. two brothers were beaten and left nearly naked on the side of the road. now one of the suspects is a u.s. marine awaiting deployment. that marine is one of four men believed to be involved in that attack that was carried out because of one of the men claimed he was ripped off trying to buy marijuana. they allegedly drove and found the brothers and beat them. one of them was beaten with brass knuckles. police say the victim's brother was left at different location. also a navy pilot from maryland is blamed for a new year's day triple murder suicide at a coronado california. 25-year-old john reis shot three people his roommate who is a fellow navy pilot his sift and another friend and then shot himself. -- his sister and another friend and then shot himself. this happened in frederick,

police believe children. temperatures combined with the wind chill made it about 11 degrees at that time. and he has been booked and the children are in the custody of their mother. and in other news the sheriff department is going after a city housing department and taking vehicles, trucks and computers owned by the housing authority are being taken to pay outstanding lead paint poison judgments. officers at the department say they can't afford to pay $12 million. the mayor promised state lawmakers the housing authority and federal officials would come up with a new plan. and more on the doctors charged with performing late term abortions. man in charge is coming back in maryland. he and another doctor performed the proceed years in elkton and should be be charged with murder it. started when the botched abortion when things went wrong and they took the woman to johns hopkins and employees called the police and police searched the doctor's clinic and found 35 fetuss in a freezer. some up to 36 weeks old. meanwhile the search is on for tommy clack the man known

the dream act would allow undocumented high school graduates to go to college and pay in-state tuition. he was part of an effort last year that collecteded-- collected over $100,000 signatures and -- 100,000 signatures and forced the law on the 2012 ballot. >> can you imagine the newspaper like sun papers or johns hopkins or some other professional organization hiring someone who is a professional but unlawfully and that's a felony and that could affect their reputation. they are not going to do it. >> reporter: now supporters of the dream act and other advocates have started raising money themselves to fight against this campaign. reporting live in essex, sherrie johnson, abc2 news. the ravens are getting ready for the first playoff game in years and the city is gearing upp we will look at how baltimore is showing off the purple pride and where the team is headed today. also, maryland's labor force is take on the controversial issue of same sex

welcome back. five things to know the board of public works approved a grant for 19 million dollars toupgrade waste water treatment plants. the project is part of the state's effort to improve the chesapeake bay and other water heways. five days into the new year and baltimore city police are investigating the first murder of 2012. a 62-year-old man was shot in a car tuesday night.

insurgents are stepping up attacks after the u.s. troop withdrawal that ended last month. the blast wounded at least 60 people. news time is 4:47. and consumer alert this morning for procrastinators. pay attention. this year you have two extra days to file your taxes. the irs pushed back the deadline from the usual april 15th to the 17th. why? because the 15th falls on sunday. the next day is emancipation day a. holiday in d.c. and the procrastinators out there you got lucky. macy's department stores is decided to close five of the stores and four bloomingdale's stores due to low business sales. abc2 news corinne redman is standing by with more and what locations in maryland. >> reporter: well, among the five macy's and bloomingdale's two are here in maryland one in bethesda and one in laurel. they blame it on underformerrance. more than 830 workers will be affected by the closings. 375 at macy's stores and 463 at

bloomingdale's but many employees may have the option of taking a job at new stores the company plans to open. macy's announced the company was planning to open five new macy's stores and one replacement store but none of those would be in maryland. clearance sales will start in sunday in the stores that are closing arun for 10 weeks. topeka kansas, laurel madison palma ohideo and texas city texas will slow close. bloomingdale's in atlanta, maryland and the mall of america in bloomington, minnesota. macy's said we continue to be committed to maintaining the healthy portfolio of stores that allows to us focus on growth from the best and most productive locations. as for workers laid off especially in maryland, they say the company will offer severance benefits. corinne redman, abc2 news. and health news this morning. a tragic story leaving behind a warning for parents about the dangers of food allergies. a 7 year old virginia girl

toyed after a allergic reaction to peanuts at her school and they had a allergy action plan. the girl's mom says the school didn't do enough to help her daughter. even with the action plan she ended up dead. the school system declined to discuss the case and sent a note home to the parents about that incident. and a scare in northwest baltimore has official warning people about the danger of carbon monoxide poisoning. officials say to install a co detector and symptoms to be mindful of is headaches dizziness and nausea. people sleeping fall victim because they are not awake to experience the system. people called 911 because of a strange smell. six people were checked for co poisoning but no one was seriously hurt. officials say someone was using a generator in or around the house. baltimore is not a healthy city for men. that's according to the latest rankings from man's health magazine. out of 100 cities, baltimore was number 12. exercise, diet and lifestyle

are some of the things they take up when considering the best rating for the cities of the best and worst for men. they found about the best city for men was burlington, vermont. most men there are healthy but you won't have to find that here. there's good news. we are up from last year. in 2011, we were the 7th worst city relative to men's health. around the nation this morning, video out of new york, a home burned to a crisp leaving nothing for the family to return to. officials say a contractor working at the home pierced a gas line and the house caught fire and exploded. everyone was able to get out safely but the fire damaged allneighboring homes and the initial home to be torn down was scheduled for later this week. 19-year-old nicole ballard ceapt her -- kept her head down as she was led into the department into jail. she is accused of walking into a woman's center in georgia and attempting to abduct a newborn. when she grabbed the baby the alarm sound and two employees

there's -- this only goes back a few hours but we had a disturbance flare up around the bay and brought snow to the delmarva so there might be a coating. i am waiting for early risers to check in. we heard about jeff perkins who said he was working two shifts havre de grace and they had a burst in the squall yesterday. looks like the regional radar not showing up flakes we highlighted on the super intensive mode from maryland's most powerful doppler radar but there's a disturbance and you can see the swirl. the one that came through with the cloud yesterday afternoon and evening snows. that's out to sea. the next one following suit and they are flaring up off the atlantic and we are missing out on the big punch that this could bring but behind that there's a lot of dry and mild air so this is actually the backside of our little cold pocket. that's there and it's pivoting out. temperatures back to near normal today and in fact we start warming things up leading into the weekend. so this round of cold air not going to stick around too long. and we get ourselves a look at warmer conditions over the next
