is going to be the one that's going to bring the heaviest rain with that. and it certainly is the case all day long today. >> in particular, middle of the day, the strongest of winds and the heaviest rains. still very much, though, ahead of us. we're sitting at the coast right now. winds are picking up out there. we've seen some decent rain so far. you can see this very well formed system. what an impressive low sitting right to our west that is dragging in with that. all this moisture that we're now seeing moving into the bay area, some spots that have already seen some heavy rain fall include marin county. and we've seen some of that picking up right around richmond up to san pablo right now. walnut creek also seeing some moderate showers as you are from dublin, down through pleasanton the south bay. you've also seen some activity but really quieted down around san jose at this moment in particular, we still plenty of energy out to the west of us in all that is going to work its way are right on the peninsula. the east bay and the north bay, too, south bay, a little quieter by

comparison, but you'll get there later on today. these pockets of heavy rain become widespread, heavy rain into the early afternoon when we'll see the heaviest of it and the strongest of winds too. winds today will gust as high as 40 to 50 miles per hour resulting high wind advisories for much of the bay area. current temps are still in the 40's to 50's. it's windy. it's cloudy. it's cool. and it's wet. just make sure that you've got those layers on and staying nice and warm. i know today is kind of a getaway day. it's easter weekend. so drive safely. reach your destination. nice and slowly. want to leave a little extra early rain. all right, john, thank you for that little west morning out there not seen accidents on our bridges, but things are particularly wet. >> 11 minutes traveling into the city right now. san mateo bridge around 14 minutes 8.80, to 101. thankfully a lot of people are taking their time wet the richmond sandra fell bridge is right now about 9 minutes. not seen any accidents. golden gate bridge. minutes. and let's get a look

at our highways green for the most part. so like conditions, the wet conditions, no need to reaches. back to you. thanks a lot. >> ok to the breaking news this morning out of the south bay where san jose police are asking people to avoid the area of ross avenue and lee avenue because of a shooting that happened earlier this morning. police say they were responding to a welfare check in that area when a man who was standing outside of a home fired a shot at them, nobody was hurt and that suspect was eventually taken into custody. no word on when these roads are going to reopen. but kron 4 is sending a crew to the scene. so we'll keep you updated when we find out more. and another breaking news story that we've got is another united flight. >> had problems taking off from sfo. it was departing yesterday supposed to go to paris, but they had to divert and land in denver because they had an issue with one of the engines united confirms with our sister station in denver that that flight had this engine issue and they

didn't declare an emergency landing because of it. they just landed safely diverted to denver as a precaution. but it was another of the same plane, the boeing 7, 7, 7, >> united said they are working with the customers today to get them out of denver and on their way to go to paris. >> well, to oakland now where the 4 largest employers in oakland are partnering working together to try to prove employees safety taking their safety into their own hands now and their own pocketbooks to. >> kron four's. michael thomas is live in oakland with this partnership. >> hey, good morning, everyone. that's right. this 10 million dollar private initiative for public safety comes as many of these employees of those 4 major companies have fallen victim to the crime here in downtown oakland, whether it's them walking to lunch or even to and from the office. >> the for larger employers that are splitting this hefty 10 million dollar bill include blue shield of california. clorox kaiser permanente in pg and e earlier this year. crime

force the companies to hire private security guards to escort employees to and from bart stations parking garages and nearby businesses. campaign manager randy in downtown oakland says having more security is ideal. i mean, myself, my i more you know. >> i see some more hundreds of people crime statistics show robberies are up. 34 1% from last year with majority happening at gunpoint. >> the new plans will adding complement existing efforts from both mayor sheng thao and oakland police ramey tells me those efforts have been noticed in the recent weeks and have helped with business. but for last 2 years. >> that that need to suffering damage from >> crime. according to blue shield website, the plans include creating an uptown and downtown safe zone. that will partner with opd to improve visible and responsive security funding for oakland, uptown downtown community benefit district ambassador

program which allow people to be escorted to and from local downtown destinations by calling or asking ambassadors in the street. employees will also get safety training in subsidized transportation. mayor thao did put out a statement saying in part, quote, i'm so grateful for the deep partnership of our 4 largest employers and see this as an example of a strong public private partnership. i applaud their engagement is true. civic leaders to improve conditions for everyone. i know we will be successful in bringing back safety growth in vibrancy. back to our streets. now, these public safety plans are set to roll out over the next few weeks. and then last throughout the rest of this year as we get more word from those companies and the city of oakland on if the crime has gone down because of it. >> we'll continue to keep you updated live this morning in oakland, michael thomas story. james, we'll send it back to that. thank you, michael. >> time now is 906. new this morning, governor newsom just announced a new plan to install 480 cameras in the

east bay to improve safety. so this is thing that they're thinking of doing. the governor's office is going use the chp. they have a contract with flock safety to install these cameras, hundreds of them. >> in oakland and also on. >> state freeways through the east bay. the goal is to help combat crime and criminal activity and reduce freeway violence. the governor says this camera network is going to use technology to allow law enforcement to identify vehicles be on the license plate number. and this will allow the agencies to search for the car suspected in violent crimes and issue real-time alerts as to where they're going. >> will for your health this morning. health officials now warning about an increase in hooping cough cases up in warren county, especially in team. and it's extra dangerous of those teenagers come into contact with the littler kids. powers will tran is live in mill valley with what we need to do. well.

>> channel, pius high school for whatever reason and they're still investigating why they are seeing such a huge surge in hoping cough at this location. the kids are inside the classrooms as we speak. many of them probably have their masks on. they're not mandated to wear masks. but if it makes you feel safe for the school says by all means and here's the reason why. and marin county, they have 113 cases whooping cough. 65 of them are at this school just to give you perspective last year, marin county had 11 cases. so they are seeing a huge spike in cases. this seems to be cyclical that every 3 or 4 years they see an uptick in cases because those kids well, those childhood vaccines, they're getting to the age where those vaccines are starting to wear off. so it's no surprise that they're it's seen hoping cough, but it doesn't mean the kids and their parents are not a little bit concerned. >> i'm a little bit has

people. >> it's kind of increasing around >> and i don't know how about but this right now, i think everyone should just stay home if you have cough or sort of. >> sent out a lot e-mails and teachers have been a fun experience that will kick off is going around the school. were you a little concerned at all? yes, because the school has a lot of students. and when classes has 32 kids, which has a high chance of me getting whooping cough. >> here's what you need to know. some of the symptoms include a runny nose. and of course, severe coughing. the good news is among their age group and adults. it's not fatal, but possibly fatal. 2 babies, 2 months or younger. and the reason why is before 2 months they're not vaccinated. and if you have children and some of them being 2 months or younger, make sure that you protect those kids have a little bit of distance. the

good news is it is very treatable. if you want to go to the doctors. well, after you get your drugs, you should stay home for 5 days. and if you don't want to take drugs on this and stay home, it's 21 days to be home before you return to school. >> well, 909 is the time skyrocketing pg e bills are a problem that we all deal with. but now we have some businesses are getting to the point where they're having to cut back, ok, you know what it's like to like heat and cool your house. imagine a movie there. >> that's a lot of space and a lot of money they have to spend. so this is a theater in orinda. the are in the theater is actually going to close down. so you don't have to worry about their pga not use a week. kron four's. dan thorn has the story. when it's dark, the theater usually has its iconic marquee lit up and drivers from highway. 24 can see it. but that was not the case. thursday night. >> as one of the cost-cutting measures, the owners of the orinda theater, a taking and

now they're also closing the theater on mondays and tuesdays after getting a more than $6,000 energy bill from pg and e. the historic movie theater in orinda is making difficult decisions over ever increasing energy bills. the orinda theater will no longer have showings on the silver screen on mondays and tuesdays.iyou know, obviously you like to be open 7 days a week, but >> if you know, we can be opened and have lost every day. you theater owner derek xem racks as it was this $6200 charge from pg any that's forcing them to cut back. the bill was 2 grand higher than what they usually see. and it came as a shock may peak the 5,000 dead of winter. >> yeah, never $6,000 in 15 years since i've been doing year in the theater opened in 1941, and place classic films and new releases. its large theater can seat up to 750 people. and during chilly evenings, heat is required to keep the audience comfortable

a fake window a live shot looks pretty nasty out guy raindrops stuck on the left. many clean that window. i know it wait a little bit because johnson is going to be raining all day. good morning job. especially mid to early afternoon. that's when we're going to see the heaviest of rainfall across the bay area. >> so the heaviest of it is still ahead of us where we're at the embarcadero right now. very wet conditions right there. just widespread light to moderate showers for most areas. winds are picking up right now as the snowfall up in the sierra and the lake and mendocino county mountains here locally solid coverage of rain up and down the peninsula. the north bay as well as the east bay. let's start right here right around the richmond. sandra fell bridge in particular. some really windy conditions there right now as well as some good rainfall. intensity stretching from sandra fell down into san francisco over the golden gate right now. this sells about to be working its way onshore and having an impact on our peninsula. communities here within the next 30 minutes of eventually after that, we're

pushing upwards towards foster city and san mateo rainfall just continues throughout the morning and are really picks up this afternoon. you see the widespread yellow and orange on the map. that's your heavier rain that moves through right in the middle of the day. today could be a busy time. but to get away day for the holiday weekend. so likely to be more people than average on the roads around that time evening commute tonight. it's going to be a lot more spotty for you. but there will be pockets of heavy rain. here's 05:45pm chance thunderstorms right around san jose right around that these pockets of rain continue overnight into tomorrow morning with some lightning strikes very likely during overnight hours tomorrow morning, starting with some heavy rain. but middle of the day we pull back on it, see low and rainfall activity. best chance of thunderstorms tomorrow will be further south in the bay. generally the further north you get the less likely you will see in the active weather for your saturday. sunday starts with a few light showers before the sun comes up. nice day for your easter egg hunts overnight hours will

come along with the chance of thunderstorm development sunday night into monday morning. you add all this up and we will see the potential of well over an inch of rainfall throughout the course of the weekend. all this comes along with some strong winds to high wind advisories in effect and remaining in effect through tomorrow. early in the morning. 52, even 60 miles per hour, peak wind gusts. those same winds in the sierra can result in some really treacherous travel today. a winter storm warning back into effect 11:00am this morning. multiple feet of snowfall in our higher elevations in particular, above 5,000 feet, expect travel delays today. chain controls and anticipate the potential of whiteout conditions and drifting snow. it's really those winds today that will cause the most issues, better. travel conditions come tomorrow and sunday and a particularly nice day to ski and all that fresh powder come monday. as for today in the bay area, temperatures mid 50's. that's as warm as we're getting. it's actually the coolest day of this week's forecast. we'll see temperatures gradually

climbing from here and by monday of next week, actually going to see some 70's right now. all right, john, thank you for that accidents on any of our bridges. but >> all of them just socked in with that rain. you see the ridges, somerville ridge really getting in on the camera lens there and they're all under 15 minutes. bay bridge is about 9 rich's amber, full ridge around 9 minute drive and 14 on the san mateo bridge this morning. you are going to be traveling today. i would say, take your time and i would advise against that if you can. 32 min right in the south, they want to want middle part. you are traveling 8 80's and better that we're up to about 30 minutes now. going back down to 26 88 to open both. look good. if you're traveling along southbound 6.80, or the northbound side, you make great time. la just took on real quick clocking out towards the maze around 60 minutes. well, she berkeley that and traffic starts to build. when yau get to oakland, things start to smooth out edges. back to you. >> thank you. reyna breaking news overnight. sad news out of hollywood. actor louis

gossett junior has passed away had a storied career. the first black man to win best supporting actor for his role in 1980, two's and officer and a gentleman. he also won an emmy for his role in the seminole tv mini series in the 70's routes. he also has a star on broadway and recently starred in the 23rd 23 remake of the color purple. no cause of death has been released yet. but louis gossett junior was 87 years old. >> it's not 19. and the north bay, a person died in a boat crash that happened yesterday afternoon. you're showing a map where this happened. it was the area of point raise headlands and marin county. someone crashed of their boat into a rocky shoreline there right near chimney rock. and a rescue swimmer with u.s. coast guard went out to the bone and they saw someone in the boat. the crews helped get them out. but that person ended up dying. we do not know their identity yet. we'll keep you posted

well, a new digital mobile radio system in sonoma county will make communication a little easier during disasters. the county's training people on how to use about 500 handheld radios. some of those radios are going to be installed in county owned cars. others will be given to police and deputies part of the funding for this system came from pg and e settlement money from the 2017 cinema complex fires. >> it's 9.26. coming up next, more coverage of the storm covering the bay area and really going to be pouring later on. we'll be back with your friday commute forecast in just a few minutes.

>> it's 9.29 or talking rain and seeing some of it to absolutely. and more of it on the way. good morning, john. yep. a lot more of it on the way. the heaviest stuff is yet to get here. but we have seen some pretty widespread light to moderate showers and a few heavy pockets so far this morning. behind me, the golden gate bridge. look how windy it is on the flag right out there. definitely a morning that is going to get windier as we go to. you can see out in this view from suture tower, just how wet and grey it is out there that low pressure area really easy to spot where the center of it that are spinning off right here out in the pacific and dragging in with that a lot of energy, our direction. we're actually right in its way. so this is going to be a direct hit for us. we're looking at some light to moderate showers for the most part this morning. some heavier stuff right around half moon bay as well as just north of the golden gate. if you're crossing there, in fact, some pretty good rainfall coming down right around sausalito right now. we are also seeing a pretty good shower right around mount diablo, getting a

little bit of upslope going on up there towards mount diablo and even a little bit of rain. snow mix at the top of south main, mount diablo this morning. futurecast continuing to see these areas of rain through the morning and all the increase intensity into the afternoon. some real heavy rainfall early afternoon. chance of thunderstorms through the evening after that winds will also increase 30, 40 even 50 miles per hour. gusts today. you pair this with those temperatures that are still in the 40's and 50's and it's a cool, brisk, wet start to the day. we're going to stay pretty similar into the afternoon. just a little bit warmer rising into the mid-fifties well, our commute is this morning. but fortunately, with all of that rain and water slick conditions could be dangerous if you're not driving slow and careful and you are resisting the need to speed even know. you think that. >> you can 11 minute ride into the city right now. no accidents on your bridges. a 13 minute ride. want to see just things are. lot of

windshield wipers on today. 8 minutes tolls to one the richmond. sandra bridge golden gate bridge. 37 to the tolls. yeah, a little bit of wins there and some rain. 22 minute ride reaches back to you. thanks. a lot of his 9.31. in too many children are being hit and killed by cars, especially around schools in the state and >> a bay area lawmaker wants to change. and yeah, so we've got kron four's dan kerman with more on what he wants to do. across the nation. school speed zones vary. but california is one of a handful % where they can be as high as 25 miles per hour. we're doing everything we can to get more and more students to walk and bike and roll the school. but we need to create a safe environment for them to be able to do that. and it doesn't matter where you live in california. >> every student deserves that. that right to safety at a news conference thursday outside councilman elementary school in campbell. but low park state assemblyman marc berman introduced new legislation which would drop california school zone. speed limits to 20 miles per hour or less. the bill would also

replace the when children are present coffee at with specific times. no longer will. we asked drivers to take their eyes off the road and search for whether there's a child president because after our bill. >> drivers will know whether you're in shasta county or san diego county, the before and after school. you need to slow down. it was a year and a half ago in september of 2022. 8 year-old jacob be a new wave, councilman elementary school 3rd grader died after being hit by a car while walking to school. we are determined that jacobs death not be in vain. and this is one more step in the right direction. the safer school zones act also requires improve safety planning within a half-mile of schools. backers of the bill say by creating similar standards around all california schools, drivers are more likely to comply if the bill passes the legislature and signed by the governor takes effect january first of 2025. >> but it would be phased in over a period of years. dan

kerman kron, 4 news. >> it's 9.33, and a store in police say was selling cannabis and tobacco products to minors. and they are showing us some of the items that they found in that store, including psychedelic mushrooms, marijuana and a variety of thc products and firearms. the storm did not have a valid license to sell these items. police have not named the business. they just say it's located on macarthur boulevard just north of 35th avenue. and that bus comes after this one. look, fake of these items were found at a smoke shop last month in oakland seminary neighborhood. and this includes a large amount of pot, crystal meth and flavored tobacco products. police say that no one was arrested in this case, though. >> well, san francisco mayoral candidate is calling for a fentanyl state of emergency in former mayor mark farrell also wants more. california national guard members to be

closing down open air drug markets in the city. and in addition, he says his plan would expand access to treatment for those suffering from addiction. but late mayor london breed. >> doesn't think that his ideas are very good and here's part of what she had to say. she says that farrell, san francisco has our national guard stroup fencing off the tenderloin. >> and creating a a baghdad by the bay. >> she says, and she goes on to say that, you know, humvees in ar fifteen's aren't her way that she would governing more from behind the scenes. >> in the east bay police identified the suspects who they say are responsible for this else. tobacco shop, smashed in that led to a police chase and then a wrong-way crash and ultimately the death of an innocent driver to this all happened earlier this month. and this is surveillance video showing the white pickup truck smashing into the front of that store. the 2 men get out and start rummaging through

the store. now, police say in this video is patrick sheckells from oakland and andre albert ii from san francisco. and when police arrived, the 2 then led them on a chase that stretched down towards the bay bridge until the suspects got onto westbound lanes of 5.80, in the wrong direction right there near the toll plaza. and moments later, the truck crashed into 2 other vehicles killing the driver of one of those vehicles. the street, a police department says it is now working with the chp to pursue criminal charges. >> time now is 9.35. and bart police think what they're doing is working. this stepped up, says safety measures at their stations making a big difference. the data seems to show that and we've got kron four's terisa stasio actually with more on the story. >> bart police chief kevin franklin saying that he's applauding this new data saying that it is a reflection of the hard work that our police officers have been doing to try make the system safer. take a look at this. you need to see these

pictures. this is an example of some of the illegal guns confiscated during arrests in total. bart police say officers took and 49 illegal handguns. that is up from 40 in 2022, it's the most guns bar police have ever recovered in a year. officers making 726 arrests and 2023 compare that with 448 in 2022, the department says that is a 62% increase in arrests. bart police chief kevin franklin saying, quote, since we started deploying more patrol officers to ride trains. we have seen an impact and our writers are telling us that they notice the difference. we spoke with riders and they shared their thoughts. takes a bite monday to friday. >> in the morning and they come back at this time in early afternoon have noticed this more. staff for the safety. i really appreciate that. >> plus, when those 2 trains are cleaner. i have i have not

had a problem and barked self. >> barnes says a quarterly performance review showed riders who reported seeing bar police on their trip reached a record high of 20%. again, the chief saying that the increase safety is mostly due to getting more officers into the department and that they continue to try and have a robust recruitment. here. an orinda theresa kron, 4 news. >> for your health this morning, there's growing concern over a spike in m-pox cases. fact, the cdc reported more than 500 cases so far this year, which is more than what we saw last year when there were 300 cases at this point. the cdc is warning that a new variant of m-pox has been detected. this one appears to be more severe. the virus is spread through personal contact. and as you can see on the screen, it has flu-like symptoms, followed with a rash, some raise lesions. there isn't pox vaccine available, but the cdc

says that the vaccination rate in the u.s. is still low. they need to get those numbers up. on the peninsula. san mateo county has released new renderings of a planned affordable housing project out at moss beach. it would include 71 one to 3 bedroom home spread across 16 buildings. and here you can see images of what it might look like. a quarter of the units will be reserved for farm workers and other low-income residents. all of the units would be rented to households that make less than the areas median income. >> it's exciting. it's great to put roofs over people's heads on the coast. there is not enough affordable housing and even with this development, it's really exciting that work. we're we're doing it. we're still deficit. so we need to keep moving forward with projects that we have in the pipeline. >> but the plan is not without its critics. some neighbors are concerned that adding dozens of new homes there will cause traffic problems and strain the already limited

>> it's 9.43. want to go to the breaking news. a shooting involving a san jose police that's closing roads. trump charles clifford on scene for us right now with a live update. charles. >> well, good morning. right now i'm standing at the corner of lay and potrero here in south san jose. take a look behind me that we've got a very large police presence here that a lot of tape up other closed off multiple intersections. this is a residential neighborhood. there's only homes here and we're still getting some details figure out exactly what happened. but here's what we do know is about 5 o'clock this morning. san jose police department officers arrived here along late to perform a welfare check when they arrived on scene. they found a man standing outside home holding a gun. now they try to negotiate with him. but according to police at some point and fired a shot at the officers there, they then may have been and exchange of

that's probably what triggered this large police presence here. they called in for reinforcements and then about 6.30, this morning they were able to get that man to safely surrender and they took him into custody. but because officer was involved in this incident and shots were exchanged, there's going to be a lengthy investigation here as they try to figure out exactly what happened. and as a result of that, they're going to have this intersection here closed down for quite a while. this happened along ley, but they're going to have lay closed between robin patrol. ross is going to close between foxworthy and lay. an orange grove is going to be closed between rustic and les. so if you're in the area, just keep in mind that there's going to be a significant police presence here. we don't believe that anybody was injured as a result of the shooting, but we're going to try to get some more information from police at some point today and hopefully have that for you later on. but that's the very latest here in the south bay, charles clifford kron, big area affected by them. best a geisha night. thank you. >> 9.45 is the time will bring it back here in the studio. we've got john with the other big stories we're tracking this morning is the rain

really starting to when you see that trail where james, it's low and i know the wind is actually the biggest issue, especially for the sierra today. it's going to be that additional snowfall. and then the strong winds up there making for some low visibility here in the bay. the winds are certainly already a factor. as is that rain, we are seeing it picking up for the bay. there's your snow in the sierra. also picking up, let's focus on the bay. first. we are seeing some pockets of heavier rain sitting just off shore right now and a little bit of that right around. 37 101 right around nevado pocket of heavy rain right there. richmond center fell bridge, especially windy and wet. there's that area of rain. that's pretty heavy. but that's going to be moving northeastward onshore on up into the peninsula. so the peninsula actually about to have some pretty solid rainfall these next several hours here. we will continue to see rainfall intensifying in by the afternoon in particular early afternoon, heavy rain and are very, very strongest of winds. we start
