dominic foppoli. the state attorney general makes a decision regarding charges and baseball is back. we take you to the coliseum, where the oakland a's took the field a short time ago. many fans, though, boycotting the season opener. >> this is ktvu, fox two news at 730. >> and tonight's opening day festivities, overshadowed by the anger surrounding the team's planned move to las vegas. good evening everyone. i'm heather holmes. this could be the last opening day at the coliseum. thousands of a's fans gathered in the parking lot ahead of tonight's game, with many choosing not to actually go inside the stadium. it is their latest public show of disappointment to the owners decision to relocate. a's manager mark kotsay understands the questions and concerns about the team's future, but he says the priority remains on baseball. >> you know, their emotion and passion to want to keep this team here and the way they

express it, you know, is, is with passion, you wouldn't expect anything less from from oakland a's fans, when they come out, they come out with support, with love and, and they do it full force, you know, and i think, for us tonight, the focus is just going to be on the game. >> fan groups organized tonight's protest of the game against the cleveland guardians, and they plan to send a message to team ownership all season long. in fact, they're calling for a summer of boycott. they want to fans to all unite, to let major league baseball officials know that they are here and willing to support an mlb franchise, but they refuse to support this team's owner, john fisher. >> i've been going to games ever since i was little. i grew up back in the late 80s, early 90s, going to games. my childhood is here. all my memories from baseball are here and that's why we call it the last dive bar. it may not be the most pretty home,

but it's our home. we could go anywhere in the city and be like, oh, 20 years ago, i sat in this seat and watched barry zito win a cy young. i was over here, watched tim hudson when his 20th game and clinched the playoffs for the a's. so all my memories are here. this is my team i grew up with. i don't want them to leave. it's not the fans, it's the owners. >> as for what's next after this opening day, we'll organizers tell us other events are being planned for home games during the season, and our zac sos is at the coliseum tonight talking with fans. so be sure to tune in tonight at ten for his full report and opening day for the team across the bay. although the san francisco giants season opener was in san diego, we found plenty of fans around the embarcadero ready to watch the game across from oracle park. momo's bar and grill had the game up on every screen in the house. fans watching today's game say they can't wait for the giants home opener a week from tomorrow. >> i've been going. i've been going the last couple of years, so i've definitely tradition.

>> now i work, you know, right on the block where the park is. and i love orange. so go, giants. yeah >> the giants unfortunately lost 6 to 4 to the padres today. you can catch the two face off again for the april 5th home opener right here on ktvu first pitch at 415. well, tackling san francisco's drug crisis is a campaign priority for those running for mayor. and today, the candidates weighed in on whether the city should declare a state of emergency over fentanyl. ktvu christian captain talked with the candidates, including one who is now calling for more national guard troops to be brought in. >> street conditions in the tenderloin and south of market have been a challenge for years in san francisco. now, with a mayoral race picking up steam, the candidates are pitching their plans to make the streets safer. mayoral candidate mark farrell said he would declare an emergency to bring more state resources to address street

conditions in the tenderloin, since the city doesn't have enough police officers to do it on its own. >> and therefore we've been letting this drug crisis continue to fester and continue to grow on our streets. to me, that's unacceptable. we need solutions, we need results, and if that requires asking the state and the federal government for additional law enforcement personnel, i'm prepared to do exactly that up to and including national guard. yes, absolutely. >> san francisco's current mayor, london breed, says the state already has assets on the ground here that are making a difference. she says a lower overall crime rate last year is an indication that her administration is beginning to make progress against a problem. decades in the making. >> not only have we made arrests of over 2000 dealers and users with the goal of getting people treatment and holding drug dealers accountable, but even just last night, there was a big operation of over 50 arrests because of the work that we're doing. >> district 11 supervisor and mayoral candidate asha safai says the solution to resolving issues in the tenderloin is to

responsibly use the resources the city already has and says his plan to use police and sheriff's deputies on foot patrols will achieve results. the other commitment i made when i was out there was i would have a satellite office of the mayor at the tenderloin police station, the mayor needs to be on the ground seeing that on a day to day basis, marshaling the resources of the city, no other person is talking about that, candidate daniel lurie says the idea of armed national guards on the streets of san francisco would do irreparable harm to the city's image. he's pushing his plan to keep out drug dealers using geo fencing and a combination of medical services and law enforcement to maintain order. he says. he, too, called for a state of emergency to address street conditions in the city. >> i'm the only candidate in this race with a comprehensive plan backed by law enforcement and behavioral health experts, to tackle the crisis on our streets, and so we need to do this. we should be doing it now.

i will do it on day one of my administration advocates for the homeless say this isn't an issue. >> the city can arrest its way out of. jennifer friedenbach from the coalition on homelessness says all of these plans are law enforcement heavy and don't address the underlying issues of mental health and drug and alcohol dependency. so there's a lot of work that's been done on figuring out how to address the crisis. >> the problem is the resources have not been put into the solutions. they've instead been put into a criminal justice response. >> there is consensus that something must be done to improve conditions in the tenderloin. for now, the debate over how continues in san francisco, christien kafton, ktvu, fox two news also today in san francisco, city and community leaders calling for more action and tangible progress as part of a city adopted plan to end encampments and provide housing for people on the streets. >> supervisor rafael mendelssohn's place for all ordinance was passed by the board of supervisors back in 2022. it requires the city to implement a comprehensive

strategy to end unsheltered homelessness within three years. >> no one should have to be camping on the sidewalks in san francisco, and we also believe that no one should be able to camp on the sidewalks in san francisco. we're going to keep pushing any way we can, every way we can in the budget. certainly at the ballot if we have to. and we're not giving up until we get this done. >> supervisor mandelman said. almost two years after place for all was passed. well, there is still no actionable plan to provide enough shelter beds to accomplish the ordinances, goals . a new trader joe's is on track to open in san francisco's hayes valley neighborhood this summer, according to a company representative. the grocery store is already starting to hire employees for this new location, one inside a condo building there on the corner of fulton and laguna streets, the new trader joe's is looking for around 100 new hires, starting at $20 an hour. that store is

will not be facing charges, at least for now. our tom vacar tells us why the years long investigation was suspended three years ago. >> then windsor mayor dominic foppoli became embroiled in multiple allegations of sexual assault and multiple civil lawsuits. despite a sonoma county sheriff's investigation and the attorney general's own. without more evidence, no prosecution. attorney general rob bonta s office that took over the case released a statement saying, at this time, we don't have enough evidence to warrant filing charges on the cases not barred by the statute of limitations. however, our investigation remains open and we urge anyone who believes they may be a victim or who has evidence to come forward. we reached out to two women caught up in this mess. one declined an interview, the other did not

return our call. then we spoke to more than a dozen people here in windsor. nobody, but nobody wanted to talk about it. we reached out to the former mayor in italy, who lives between windsor and there. >> i mean, honestly, it was, it was a mix of relief and some anger. obviously, i've been very, very clear since the beginning that there was no truth to any of this. and i'm just, i think, glad that we're finally able to move on and hopefully start to heal. >> several civil lawsuits still remain. >> the litigation has never had anything to stand on from the beginning, they've kicked the can for, i think, close to two years now. >> if there's any contrition, it is this some of them were people that i had genuine relationships in the past, and i was young. >> and through reflection and prayer, i realized, yeah, i wasn't a perfect partner. did i ever do anything criminally wrong or anything inappropriate? no. >> the former mayor says the

other women were looking for a big payday. mara sabini is foppoli's fiance of two and a half years. >> he was very clear about the situation with me, so i knew everything since the beginning and i was lucky to be able to. i mean, know him for the real person who is and for the good person that he is. and i always believed in him since the first day. >> we also reached out to the sonoma county sheriff's office, and they said in a statement, our investigators dedicate extensive time, effort and resources to ensure a complete and thorough investigation before submitting a case for a potential prosecution. we respect the attorney general's decision in their independent investigation, tom vacar, ktvu, fox two news sam bankman-fried, the founder of former crypto giant ftx, was sentenced today to 25 years in prison in new york. >> he was found guilty last november of misappropriating funds and for defrauding investors and customers out of

billions of dollars. bankman-fried is also required to pay more than $11 billion, which is essentially a formality . after ftx went bankrupt and tanked his billionaire status as a former us attorney spoke with fox business and said that he believes today's sentence was not long enough. >> he's going to do about 15 years, maybe less. yeah, i think the sentence should have been way closer to the 40 or 50 that the government asked for in the case to judge kaplan. >> other experts, though, say a 25 year sentence is essentially the same thing as throwing the book at him. considering that bankman-fried is just 32 years old, he said today he was sorry that he made a lot of bad decisions, but he never admitted fault. bankman-frieds legal team will likely file an appeal. alright, a winter weather advisory, in effect for the greater lake tahoe area. light snow all day today and yesterday, causing low visibility for drivers heading up on the mountain passes. chain

controls are currently in effect on highway 50 as well as interstate 80, so be sure to keep that in mind if you plan to head up to the mountains. high winds might also hit the sierra, so you should expect some delays or road closures. and a lot of people looking to maybe get out of town mark for the easter holiday weekend. and you know, it's going to be a little tricky here in the bay area as well. >> won't be smooth sailing as the next storm. you know, we had the rainfall move in last night into this morning. the next one will be stronger, so just factor that into your plans. rain and also some wind. so take a look at the rainfall totals over the past couple of days. felt in 0.79 over 4/10 of an inch for san mateo, santa rosa and napa san francisco 0.20 and san jose 0.15. so here is the setup a stronger storm for friday that will linger into saturday, and rainfall expectations about a half an inch all the way to over two inches for the santa cruz mountains. a wind advisory kicks in as well. for parts of the bay area, we could have gusts going up above 40 miles an hour. so the wind advisory this begins 11:00 tomorrow morning until

5:00 saturday morning. it's a defined wind moving in from the south. right now we have lots of cloud cover overhead, and there's still a chance we could have a few leftover sprinkles out there. but as you can pick out the main activity today, we still have some scattered rain showers, but also tracking some rain showers. also, up to the north of the bay area. here is our next system developing off shore here. this tight circulation. this will be approaching our coastline tomorrow and also down towards southern california as well. here's a live camera looking out toward the bay bridge out toward san francisco. we have some overcast moving in, and current numbers have cooled off into the 50s, around 52 to 57 degrees. tomorrow morning, rainfall will be developing throughout the morning hours, and definitely those winds picking up from the south. so here's a setup. we have this big circulation up here. our next storm within the flow is developing right about here. so as a result rainfall rates will be on the increase throughout the day tomorrow on your friday possibly be some thunderstorms, especially friday night into saturday. and those gusty winds as well. as you heard the sierra, they pick up a winter storm warning in place.

this begins 8:00 friday morning, right on through 5 p.m. sunday, and snowfall could be around 10 to 24in. so here is the plan. tomorrow morning. the rain develops. tomorrow morning. this is 10:00 and maybe some scattered thunderstorms as well. this is friday night and then into saturday, some off and on. rain showers once again. still talking about the chance of some thunderstorms. and then in a sunday for easter, the main storm will be to the south of the bay area, but there is a slight chance of a leftover sprinkle or a light shower that could develop by sunday afternoon. but for the most part, we are expecting improving conditions throughout the day on sunday. here's a look ahead. so we're going to keep an eye on the radar and keep the umbrellas nearby. tomorrow and into saturday. we could have some heavy downpours out there. and then on sunday and into early next week, we'll scale back in the clouds and a bit of a warming trend by monday. heather. >> all right mark, thank you. the iconic arena theater now making some changes

pioneers harvey milk started off serving in the navy before coming to san francisco to be a politician. to commemorate the maiden voyage, visit the ship hosted an event today to honor local military veterans, including an official lapel pinning ceremony. we covered when the ship was officially named after harvey milk in 2016 at a ceremony there on treasure island. all right. turning the tragic death of a restaurant owner into a call to action. we'll tell you about the local campaign to teach all restaurant workers how to save someone from choking. and then later tonight on the 10:00 news, dungeness crab season is coming to an early end across the bay area. say about the reasons behind the decision. plus, we are meeting the bay area's first black female drag racer , her journey to the

attention to the issue. and today we're spotlighting a local campaign that hopes to turn a tragedy into an opportunity to save lives. back in 2022, owner of the beloved frederico's restaurant there in fremont, kiko rodriguez, died after he started choking at work. now, sadly, no one in the restaurant that day knew how to perform the heimlich maneuver. so, to honor kiko's memory, his brother partnered with washington hospital health care system there in fremont to teach restaurant workers the sign of choking, as well as the heimlich

maneuver. and earlier today on the floor, we spoke with kimberly hart, ceo of the hospital's health care system, about the importance of continuing the heimlich during an emergency. >> it may not happen the first time in terms of doing that thrust, but you must continue to try to do that. you also must make sure that you tell someone to dial 911. so that is happening at the same time, you're trying to dislodge that food. >> now, according to the national safety council, choking is the fourth leading cause of unintentional deaths here in the u.s. those are 5000 choking related deaths in the u.s. every year, mostly in young children and adults over the age of 65. okay, this weekend is big. saturday is the inaugural home game for the bay fc women's professional soccer team, and ahead of saturday's sold out game, the team hosted a news conference with san jose mayor matt mehan. he was presented with a bay fc letterman jacket. it's the same kind presented to san francisco mayor london breed
